Oil change interval pulling trailer

Would like to find out what is the oil change interval in Miles when towing a camper trailer. Our trailer weighs 8600 lbs fully loaded and we travel all over. Toyota says 5000 miles using a full synthetic oil and usually could go ten thousand miles when not pulling a trailer. Any comments would be very much appreciated

5000 miles here, maybe a little earlier if I know I have a busy month coming up and won't have time.

I also run 5W-30 full synthetic. I'm in the south (hot) and the truck is either towing or carrying a load most all the time. I've noticed the truck is quieter when it is hot and hot outside. I've also noticed no decrease in MPG by running this weight oil.

 

5k if you're towing even only 1000 of those miles. I go 7-8k between changes but I dont tow. Maybe some day I'll have the balls to go 10k lol

 

I do 5k changes as well since I tow a lot, remember your differential and trans fluid intervals are shortened as well.

 

Towing is considered ‘heavy service’. So is city driving. I’d change at 3000 miles if I was you. Cheap insurance. Disclaimer: I do NOT own a quick change oil franchise.

 

Even with todays synthetics you would cut it back to 3k? I would send off for an oil analysis after 5k change and see what it comes back at. Only real way to know what's going on.

 

I’ve never done an analysis, but I’m sure it costs money. Doing an oil change with filter runs me about $45 for material and is cheap insurance.

Blackstone runs analysis for like $25 I think, pretty good reports from what I have seen and can help you nail down a change interval. Those sludge pictures in the link above have to be for some pretty severe cases where people go a long time before an oil change. I always follow the recommended interval on my vehicles and have never had an issue. My father had an 87 corolla that had an interval of 7500 on conventional, which was probably unheard of then. He followed it and put 325k miles on that car, along the way we had to change the valve cover gasket and that engine was clean inside. If you change your oil regularly I don't think you should have much of an issue.

I have an analysis sitting in my garage I'm ready to send out for the oil and the rear diff, I will update when I get the results.

 

A little preventative maintenance can't hurt. Do the oil changes as regularly as you can afford.
