Talk me out of a 2019 Tacoma Trd Pro

Keep the truck and buy a used Camry hybrid. Those things will fly and get 40mpg. Or keep the truck and buy a used Tacoma.

Well if you’re into lackluster 3.5L v6 power, a transmission that constantly hunts for the right gear and uncomfortable/cramped seats (I’m 6’), then a 3rd Gen Tacoma is perfect.

I owned one for about 18 months...couldn’t get rid of it fast enough. Was it easier to park and did it get slightly better gas mileage? Sure, but not enough to overcome the other shortcomings/annoyances.

 

Just don't buy a new truck and save the money for fuel.

 

MPG reason to switch to a Tacoma??

I am getting an average of 18 mpg in my Tundra. Yes I drive it like an old man but never understood the questioning of mpg between a Tacoma and Tundra because there is no difference if you drive it with care.

 

You will regret it everyday of your life.

I hear you. I love my tundra so much, but a manual Tacoma does sound fun.

 

Got in my wife’s 4Runner last week and thought “never again”. That platform seems tiny after driving the Tundra for a month. The Tundra is worth the 20% over the Taco every day of the week unless you need a dedicated off-road rig.

 

I'm 6'3 -6'4, never had an issue feeling cramped in my Tacoma. I didn't even have my seat all the way back. I liked the sitting lower stretched out position that some seem to hate. I wouldn't have an issue with driving a Tacoma again. The Tundra is a lot more truck and with me, the wife, kid, and two dogs, there is a lot more room for us all, but if it was just me driving it, I always liked my Tacoma.

 

tacoma upgraded in tech and amenities, but went backwards on reliability and drivetrain.

 

I won't talk you out of the Tacoma. In fact, I encourage you to get one.

Spend one day with that engine, and you will have learned your lesson.

If you fit comfortably in a Taco get it in the 6speed m/t. The 3.5 sucks compared to the 4.0. The 4.0 had better lower end tq.

Here's the cons on MPG though. At least with the m/t truck I had. Once you start going over 65mph your millage drops fast. I had my 2014 Tundra and 2016 Taco at the same time. If I'm going up hills and going on hwy's that are 70+, Tundra was better.

 

I get 1.1 mpg fewer in my TRD Tundra with Michelins on it than I did in my Tacoma with 265/75R16s AT tires on it. Wash.

 

This is good advice....except be prepared to buy custom tailored shirts.

With all the shifting you'll be doing, your right arm will never fit in a standard sleeve again.

Or maybe just let the auto trans do the work for you.

 

I’ve never heard of a guy going from a Tundra to a Taco.. but if you search this forum, you will see tons of people, like myself, that went from Taco to Tundra..

Although the Tacomas are very nice, they are way too small for me. I had a 2014 Tacoma for all but 6 months before I traded it for another Tundra. It was the TRD, 4x4, four full doors, lifted and all. But, I felt every bump in the roads and it was definitely too small for me to ride around comfortably with my wife, son, and 150lbs mastiff.

 

They are the nicest mid size truck on earth, and the only one I would ever buy......

But once you go full size, there is no going back.

 

Traded my ‘16 Tacoma for a Tundra. The Tacoma’s new motor is a dog and realistic gas mileage is in the neighborhood of mid 16s to mid 17s. Add weight or even steep inclines and she struggles. The rear seats with you being 6’4 is going to be tight if you have kids riding back there. That’s the main reason I upsized. It was getting snug for my girls in the back. Don’t get me wrong. I loved my Tacoma but it did get small quick and I missed the second gens motor and tranny. The biggest thing about it that I miss is the push button start and never having to take out the key fob to unlock/lock the truck. I bought a sport tundra so I also miss having a sunroof. But other than that the tundra is by far the better vehicle. My girls tell me on a nearly daily basis how much more they like the Tundra better.

I think comfort in a Tacoma depends on your build. Long legs and short torso OK. Never had a problem wit leg room in mine. Low seating position and ceiling bothered me. I could hardly wear a hat without reclining the seat more than I wanted. Legs would get sore in Tacomas on longer drives which rarely happens in Tundra. Drive 22k per year and gas bill is about $30/month more. One thing I really liked about the Tacoma was oil changes. They were super easy with top mounted filter and vertical drain. Plus with Fumoto I could put a 5 quart jug under pan and open Fumoto and walk away. New powertrain in Tacoma plus 21 gallon tank and same MPGs towing 5000 lb boat forced me to buy a Tundra.

 

No way! I’m 5’10 and it was to small. It’s awkward just getting in the truck. Not to mention the power sucks ass in the taco. Had a 16 double cab off-road 4x4. Loved it to get around town but getting on the freeway and going up hills made me hate the truck. You would have to stomp on the peddle to maintain speed your speed.
