Thinking about downgrading... I am 6'4" but like the idea of better MPG, and being able to drive it in SF if I want to....

Any of you guys come from a 3rd gen taco?

I'm the same height as you and I don't like sitting in the Tacomas. They're too cramped.

Get a first gen Tundra. Equal or better mpg and V8 torque at 1/4 the price.

I've only owned Tundras but I think being 6'4" and going from a CrewMax to a Tacoma is going to be rough. Then there's the fact that Tacoma TRD Pros cost as much or more as a nice CrewMax.

My local dealer has both, Tacoma trd PRO and a 2019 TRD PRO Tundra. The taco is 46k the tundra is 52k. You get a shit load more truck with the tundra for only 6k difference.

3.5L is awful. That's one of a hundred reasons.

good point. But I also just built a 19 tacoma Off-Road and put those cool 16 inch trd wheels on it, and at 39k that sounds like a fun time.

I love my Tundra, but as a result of it being lifted, etc., Its not feasible to take it out of the best state in the country.

    Are you in Reno/Sparks area?

I’m 95% confident in saying that you will regret downsizing to a taco, unless you’re planning to make a trail rig out of it.

As a native San Diegan, I know Nevada is the best state.
    In Reno!

I do plan to mod it to my eyes and take it everywhere.

The thing is I don’t tow anything, and we like to camp occasionally and explore the Nevada desert

I loved the size of my 3rd gen Taco, but even at 5’9”, the high floor and legs out seating position just wasn’t comfortable.

I’ve gone back and test driven one a few different times to confirm how it sits. The Tundra is just so much more comfortable despite shitty gas mileage, being a pain in the ass to park and just unwieldy.

I’ve lived in Reno and sparks a few times over the years(ex’s) but from Truckee.

If you want to build a camping/expo rig, I would highly recommend keeping the tundra. The extra power and payload is a huge advantage. If you plan to explore tight trails where the taco would be more nimble, then I understand. I had a 4th gen 4runner that was ideal for narrow technical trails but lacked space and payload. With my 1st gen I now have more interior space than the T4r and a 6’ bed for all the camping stuff plus my rtt. It’s huge compared to the T4r but I don’t need a trail rig anymore, for the time being at least.

If you do the right mods to the 3.5, like chrome exhaust tip (+5HP), light bar (+12HP), rubber truck nuts (+21HP) then you won't even see the difference... I would never do what you are thinking... There is a reason the tundra costs $8-10K more!

But listen man... the Taco TRD Pro is just awesome. I love the tech, the feel, etc. it is expensive for what you get and it’s small inside. If you do it... I’d love a shot at your Icon setup!

I'm 6'2", to me the Tacoma feels like what I imagine driving a miata would be like. Small go-cart with not much juice. If kids are even on the horizon, you can stretch out in a crewmax Tundra.

I'm 6'4" also and could not get comfortable in a new Tacoma. If I was shorter and the Tacoma was as reliable as the Tundra, then I would likely go that route. Since I can't change my height it was an easier decision.

Dude, I'm one of a few people that can jump up and down in the back of a UH/MH-60 and even I find the Tacoma small. I'm 5' 7", you're 6' 4".

If you have an itch, scratch it! Though I think your mind is made up, b/c you want to drive in the city.
MPG ain't much better, both of my boys are getting 16-18 MPG. Both Tacomas have the 4.0L.

Hell, if you are looking to go exploring and camping, get a 4Runner. That's my next vehicle, keeping my Tundra but I absolutely love, every generation, of 4Runner. Any year, any mileage, they are all good. Just my .02 worth of pretty much nothing.

Have you sat in/drove a new Tacoma? I'm also 6'4" and sat in one for about a minute. It felt extremely cramped in that thing, much more than my old 2004 Tacoma.

I have. It is definitely far more tight than the Tundra. I had a 2005, and loved it. But I suppose times change!

I just upgraded from a Tacoma. The 2016 redesign is nice but the 3.5L is a dog. You will pay the same for a TRD Pro Tacoma as a new SR5 tundra.
You may get better mpg in a tacoma but you will also stop for gas more often, they only hold around 18 gallons at E

4runner? Or do you need the truck bed? Just throwing out options if better MPG and city driving is needed
