I'm currently in the negotiating/decision making process for a new Tundra, and I need input from everyone here. But first, a little back story on how we got here...

Last year I was in the market for a new car. I narrowed my search down to a Chevrolet SS or Tundra TRD Pro. Since it was the last year for the SS I went with that and bought a beautiful regal peacock green metallic with a 6spd. A year later, I sold the SS and have come to the following realizations:

    1. I don't want to drive a stick every day; it aggravates my bad knee
    2. Driving the SS daily left me never wanting to drive my '02 Boxster, which is also a stick
    3. I miss driving a tank (one of my favorite vehicles to have owned was a Nissan Armada)
    4. We need a truck back in the family (wife sold hers in 2016 and son sold his in 2018)

I've narrowed it down to a 2019 TRD Pro or a 2018 Platinum; both black; don't get my wife started on how long it took me to decide between black or white. Current pricing with a couple of options/accessories is $50,651 for the Pro and $48,819 for the Platinum (both out the door). There are deals to be had on the 2019 TRD Pro, but it took contacting nearly 15 dealerships in 3 states to get that pricing.

My issue is this - I love the look (well, other than that sensor on the grill), sound, and driving dynamic of the Pro. Getting the Platinum means several thousand more to invest to convert to a 'Platinum Pro'. I've never done that sort of modification to a vehicle (old or new) and replacing the suspension and exhaust gives me a bit of heart burn (warranty issues?). Will I miss the bells and whistles of the Platinum if I get a Pro? My Armada didn't have them, but the last 2 vehicles I've had did.

I'm currently leaning towards the TRD Pro based mostly on not being sure about modifying the Platinum and the ease of it being mostly as I would want it straight off the lot.

What would you do and why? Just thinking I may hear some nugget in your rationale that I haven't thought of already.

TLDR: 2019 TRD Pro or 2018 Platinum with Pro modifications

What's the use of the truck going to be? Do you think you will miss the luxury stuff since you've had it before?

Use will be 95+% on road, family/dog hauler (4, mostly grown, kids and 4 dogs), and occasional household stuff mover. The on road driving characteristics felt far superior in the Pro than the other trim levels, to me at least. I found that to be true when I drove the 2017s as well.

Edit: We don't get too cold in South Carolina but we do get hot. I may miss the heated/cooled seats in the extreme months. Probably miss the dual zone climate control at first anyway.

If it were me and my money I'd definitely get a Platinum (white, but sounds like you've finally settled on black :)) and just upgrade to your liking. The Pro is kind of cool, but the only thing you can't upgrade on the Plat is the bed stamp. If you go Pro, you'll be missing heated/cooled seats, power fold mirrors, memory seats (that'd do it for me right there), dual climate control, parking sensors, etc...

Good luck either way and welcome!

    Welcome,
I am not sure what the bells & whistles are in the Platinum that you will not have in the Pro, but for me I would just go with the Pro if that is what you ultimately want. I think it is a waste to buy a new truck and immediately throw away brand new suspension, wheels etc., especially if those items are already available on another trim level.

Edit: the two posts above me identified the bells & whistles. As far as the climate control and heated seats - only yo can answer that question - how important are those to you? From what I understand the cooled seats are not very effective - just a fan blowing, not cooled like in a Escalade.

That's where I get bogged down. I don't think I would modify the Pro, other than maybe some eventual appearance modifications.

the Pro is great stock. Decent suspension, nice looking wheels. But if you gonna swap rims and upgrade your suspension then get the Platinum.
The Pro has better resale value though imo.

I would go Pro, especially if I was going to spend the money to make a Platinum look like a Pro. For me the "luxury" items like heated seats, memory seats etc aren't a big deal at all and don't miss having them. Also, I am not a fan of the Platinum interior, not fan of the stitching on the seats or the dash.

I’ve read Plat seats are the most comfortable. Test drive both. I personally prefer the Pro. I have a love/hate with my black truck, always washing/detailing it to get that mirror finish.

Could get the pro and add katskinz with the cooled/heated seats. I'd go with what you liked driving and it seems you like the way the pro handles better.

Yeah, I struggle with that. I've owned lots of black cars (that SS might as well of been black too). That's why I struggled so hard between white or black (or other if not a Pro)...but ultimately, black is just too damn nice when it's clean, even if only for 10 minutes, and I can stop thinking of white as a work truck from certain angles.

I went in originally to look at a Pro last year as an upgrade to my 2008. I ended up in a 1794 (originally had ordered a platinum) because the luxury features and discount far outweighed the TRD PRO bed stamp for me, who is using the tundra as 95% road family/kid hauler (like OP, I have a manual German car for funsies).

If you youre going to keep your truck completely stock, get a TRD Pro.

If you do want to mod your truck get a Limited Crew Max. Saves you money and you still get some added features over the TRD Pro. Then get yourself a nice Mid Travel setup (Fox, King, ADS, or Icon) with the money you saved and it will be better than a TRD Pro.

I think if I got the Pro, the most I would ever do would be some aesthetic modifications.

I seriously considered the Limited trim when I was deciding between Crew Cab and Double Cab. The sunroof and back window ultimately won me over though.
