LineX'ing the Chrome

Was thinking about LineX'ing the entire back bumper, rocker panels, fender flares, front bumper, and middle of the grill. Color match the hood bump and outer portion of the grill. Also ditching the chrome handles and mirror caps.

Im debating on taking the existing items to a body shop and have it done, or buying an MGM grill/bump and just getting the center of that LineX'd.

Does anyone have anything like this? Which would be cheaper? Someone mentioned a DIY "Raptor Kit" (

I suggest get it done at a Line-X shop. I did it 2 years ago and it still looks the same.

 

I think someone had an MGM pro grill and bulge for sale right now in the 3rd gen for sale forum

 

yeah, i saw that. he has 3 bidders right now. its close to price for new as well.

curious, does anyone know why it is not recommended to get the chrome painted over?

 

This is Raptor Liner... I've been spraying Raptor for about 5 years now. Never had an issue.

Thanks... you have to rough up the chrome pretty good. I used a DA and 80 grit... The bedliner needs something to bite onto.

im going to the body shop tomorrow to get a quote. if its crazy high, i may rethink my hesitation to do the raptor kit myself.

It is pretty awesome. It looks just like LineX, just as tough. We've put it to the test, it's held up awesome.

 

Went to one of the local Line-X dealer/rep/installers:

Quoted $800 for the rocker panels and $200 for each bumper. This does not include any labor costs for bumper removal, etc... nor does it include the bottom interior of the doors, nor underneath the rear bumper, just the outside of the rockers.

I will be going with the DIY Raptor kit unless one of the other local reps has a more reasonable price. $1400+ for that is an INSANE price. $500-$600 I can see. Hell, I just had the bed done 2 weeks ago when I bought the damn truck and that was only $500.

 

expensive, I paid $100 each bumper but removed them myself. they were also doing the bed a the same time so they cut me a deal too.

 

i'd do $100 each bumper in a heartbeat, offered to remove them myself. $200 was the start price for each.... that didn't include the labor cost for removing and reinstalling the bumpers.

 

Are you local to York PA? We will do that job for $500. We will not remove bumpers, we pull fog lights, rear bumper step pads, etc. then bag off the rest of the truck.

 

Just make sure you take the time and prep the chrome properly or it might peel off. It might be better to dust blast with a sandblastr to make sure it's roughed up enough. Used a sander with 80 grit on mine and it started to peel off in spots. Same thing happened on my chrome tube steps. I don't think 80 grit has enough to bite into chrome. Just make sure you don't blast it to hard so the chrome starts to peel off. Good luck.

 

Damn, that’s a bit of a drive. I’m down in AL unfortunately. I’m looking at other installers today and let you all know how that goes.

 

I want to do that to my ‘08 CM.
Just talked to guy at local Line-X shop and he said it could peel from the plastic part. Has that happened?

 

It wont peel from the plastic if done correctly. Line-X encapsulates the entire piece.

 

This may be a dumb question, but i keep seeing people mention sanding the chrome. Why not take a wire wheel to the chrome on a grinder?

 

That’s what I thought. I think basically he was saying he could not guarantee it.

 

A wire wheel will scratch it but not prep it enough to bond the material.

 

Wire wheel should take a bunch of it off right? Then one could sand, clean, prime?

 

60 or 80 grit on a DA will get it good enough to bite. An adhesion promoter wouldn't hurt either

Do you bedline professionally? Need my bed and front bumper/chrome ends done. Coming from Reading PA

 

Thinking of doing this to my front/rear bumpers, fender flares and still deciding about the hood. I was looking into white line-x but with my bumpers containing black plastic and white I'm unsure how it would look to do the entire thing white color matched. Does anyone have pics or suggestions? the other option would be do white where the paint is and black where the plastic is... Ideas???
