Running boards or nerf bars

Hello guys,

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere but I searched and couldn't find anything

Question I have:
I have black truck that most of my chrome is gone except chrome finish running boards. So now I'm not sure would the chrome boards survive Chicago winter if I take them to local lineX shop by me or I should get new running boards in black but still I'm concerned about salt and winter at Chicago and suburbs

Any suggestions are highly appreciated based on experience with your boards if you are with similar climate like my location

With your truck i'd get something like this. Some of them you can get in a textured black paint, almost like Line-x already.

 

Still not sure exactly what should I buy.

 

I love my nerf bars!

 

I like the look of bars but get the boards. Basically, because in the fall I take a lot of gravel when hunting. The boards seem to help with rock chips.

 

Yep....go with step style. Had Nerfs. Couldn't get them off soon enough. My dog even likes me more now. Check out RCI steps. Provides decent protection from rocks and very good powder coating. Shouldn't have rust issues.

 

Go with nerf bars. Running boards are for old guys in gold trucks. Lol

 

Running boards?? Seriously? Nerfs are good for breaking dogs' legs..lol....this old guy with a MGM is running with Body Armor Rock steps like these see build thread



RCI's heavy duty side steps... Very nice too! Both of these choices are a far cry from being running boards but still provide some modicum of protection and resistant to rust with the powder coating. Not sliders but still darn good. @LKSR5-14, whatever you decide, If you keep your nerfs' get them powder coated. Lose that chrome. I spent too much time keeping my chrome nerfs polished/rust free and besides I would have torn them off eventually when wheeling....

 

I'd imagine Line-X/Rhino lining those chrome ones would be cheaper than buying new black ones (unless you go with the plastic running boards). That lining is really durable and should stand up to the harsh salt/chemicals they put on winter roads up there.

I pulled the steps that came on my truck off and tossed them in the shed. I would look at AMP power steps. Those I like.

 

Not sure if nearest shop would lineX mine so I could save some money. Would they remove that top plastic or protect when spraying?
I noticed brackets underneath already rusty.

 

I'm not biggest fan of those power steps to be honest and they are pricy.
Less electric mods I think is better instead of having headaches what fill have failure

 

I'm sure you could ask them to do that, but they'd have to do some extra prep work (which likely means added cost) so they could be reinstalled. I would probably just have them spray over the plastic as well. However, if your mounting brackets are already rusting then it may be more worthwhile to just buy new ones and get them sprayed, depending on how bad the rust is.

I think Toyota even makes an OEM set too.

 

I personally run the chrome steps, but if i had a blacked out Tundra i'd run those black N-Fab ones. Especially if i lived up north. I feel that those are a little bit tougher.

Found someone selling used on Facebook and said came off 2014 for $150 do anyone know what brands they are and is these any good at all or just waste of money

Did anyone ever had Toyota black running boards for DC? Found them few months old $ 250

 

Those might be stainless... My dad had a set on his 2010 that were stainless and looked like that.

 

Just put these on last week and really like them. Rough Country DS2.

 

I'm having a hard time trying to find flush mount running boards that don't stick out super far. I don't like the Toyota 5" ones because they hang a little low for me.

I ordered some new Raptor Series OEM 6" running boards, but they are back ordered. I like how close the RCI ones mount, but the wife wants something a little "fancier." TBH, they are a little pricey as well for what I am needing.

I want it flush-mounted to the lip that is under the door., which should take up about 1.5" of the width. The Steelcraft STX600 do just that, but at 6.5" wide, they look like they still stick out pretty far.
