Hello all. I am a long time gear head/car nut, 31 cars and counting. Recently Ive been bit by the overland/expedition bug and am shopping for a project Tundra.Looking at a 2007 5.7 double cab SR5 right now. This would be my first toyota truck, only other toyota's being cars, 1996 corrolla and 1988 turbo supra.

Welcome to the forum Casey! Nothing wrong with an 07 SR5 DC...I've got one...92K miles...not one leak anywhere....and most importantly....................not that many soccer mom nannies to cause you issues with fixing up your DC for overlanding. Quite a few overlanders here to to get great info from!

Thanks all for the warm welcome. I live in CT but intend to use this in northern VT, NH and ME, possibly Nova Scotia CA. I use to be heavily into everything and anything fast, but after all that and some age you start to slow it down and enjoy the ride/adventure.

Yep..."electric safe guards" that seem to be a huge headache for some here. Safe guards I've managed without for 46 years without one accident. And no limp mode and going to the dealer to "fix" them...

No. They DON'T have a lot of nannies compared to every other American truck (Tundras are assembled in San Antonio of parts-- including some parts manufactured in Alabama). So if you want all the comforts and bells & whistles in the cab that the Big 3 have, Tundras don't have 'em unless you go Platinum....

Mostly, Tundras don't have some modified 6 cylinder working hard to act like an 8. We beat every other truck in reliability. You can get a decent back-up display, lane exit warnings, and in 2018, TSS (detects hazards and and assists with stopping, like that), but not as many goodies as other makers. More stuff may be included in the 2019's but very few on here have one yet, so I don't know what the changes may be.

I'm old school.. I don't care too much for electric nannies that interfere when 4 wheeling. Yes... they can be turned off but you are still left with a "computer/ECU" managing our fake "limited slip differential". I'd be willing to guess the big 3 truck owners don't have to turn off nannie controls before wheeling with their real LSD's. Love my Tundra big time but quite frankly I don't need a computer's help when 4 wheeling. Some folks do which is fine. A huge pet peeve for me. If nannies make you feel safer then great! I work with high tech electronics at work which is great. Don't need that cr*p in my 4X4 truck. My car??? OK....

I really like my 07 sr5. The work truck toughness and still looks good when pulling up somewhere nice.

Interior features, i didnt actually think about them at the time. My past trucks i guess had some but to me a new headunit and speakers covers most of my luxuries.

My truck has a job and is on the clock when im in it so it shouldn't be playing with all those gadgets and gizmos on my dime. Ive fired my nephew for being on his phone at work and i even like him. Hmm... But, i am starting to like my truck a little better now days though.

That 1988 supra sounds like it was (is?)a blast. Dont really see supras any more. Hopefully the new one carries on where the past ones left off.

Id rather disable all that stuff and go old school with lockers. Controlling wheelspin and ect is the driver's job in my opinion. Have issues? Learn how to drive better lol
