had to go to the dmv the other day for tag renewal on the truck. i was supposed to be able to renew it online but with CO's system reboot, i was one of the lucky ones who's info got a little jacked up. anyway, that's besides the point.

i just put the new sticker on the truck and noticed that on the back of the registration it lists toyota as the lien holder. that's weird. came inside to dig out the title. toyota is still listed as the lien holder on the title too. went back through emails and pdfs just to verify that i did receive the 'we got your payoff' letter. i have it.

so, what did i miss? truck has been paid off for about a year now. i've never had this happen. can i clear this up with the dmv?

Did you finance with a bank or Toyota? Do you have an actual copy of the title?

Yes, "probably". We just encountered the same thing in CA when we were ready to sell a car we'd paid off. Learned it is up to the owner to prove a lien has been satisfied. I think "we" showed the payoff paperwork to DMV in person, because we were in a hurry to clear it for sale. Not sure if you can do this by mail.

Toyota and I have the actual title. It took forever to get it from them after the payoff. Many calls and emails.

Probably is fine by me. DMV here is nothing like it is in SD and I have a 'secret' office that is very empty. I was in and out with new tags in less than 10 min the other day. I'll run down there one morning next week.

I worked at Arkansas DMV for a few years. When you pay your truck off you get the title back from Toyota with them listed as the lien holder but it is signed and released. The state has no idea that you paid it off and the lien is released. You need to take your current title that has Toyota as the lien holder and signed by them as released to the DMV and get a new title showing no lien holder and it will release the lien in their system also. You'll get one back with your name only on it. If you lost the title you have you would have to get a release of lein from Toyota to apply for a new title.

coolest. thanks for the input. i've never had to do that before. every other title has always shown up with my name on it. i figured they were just pissed at me for sending in the payoff with the first payment...

AAA does help with DMV stuff here. A lot quicker than falling in line at DMV :)

There is nothing wrong with your title except if you loose it then you will need a lein release from Toyota to apply for a new title. But like I said the lein will stay in the state's system until you bring them a release of lein and keep the the title you have or go apply for a new title with no lein on it, to do that take the one you have that's signed off by Toyota and they will keep it and send you a "free and clear" title with just your name on it. That is what you are actually supposed to do once you receive the title from the lein holder when its paid off although you dont have to but if it gets lost it can cause headaches. Most people never do this.

I guess to sum this up for anyone; when you pay your vehicle off and receive the title from the lein holder go straight to the DMV, hand over that title, and apply for a "free and clear" title that just has your name on it.

That sucks about the CO reboot! I always prefer online, recently in Texas, you have to go get the State Inspection sticker first and then they enter it in the system and then you can go online for the license sticker! $7.00 for the State inspection and another $81.00 for the license sticker for my daughters 2015 Camry! Prices are crazy!

Take your title and lien release to the DMV and they will re-title it without the lien holder on it.

Colorado was my birthplace, amazing country but that's high for registration! Makes me feel better, sorry!
