I have a 2012 5.7 4x4 rock warrior package truck. About a year ago I noticed a whining noise coming from rear end only when accelerating. I took it to dealer and I was first told to trade it in. I was then told the whole rear end will need replaced. They checked the oil, and there was no metal, or need to replace fluid. Anyway the truck had just run out of warranty, so I was really upset. I sent email to Toyota, and they basically said they would remove half of the repair costs. I think that made it like $1700 for replacement. I didn't do anything, I have been driving truck and the noise doesn't seem to be getting worse. Anyone have a good idea as a cheaper fix to my problem. Thanks.

wait....the dealer concluded the rear end was toast and then recommended you trade it in...to them???
    Interesting...

Sounds like one of those good ol' "yeah, buddy. Sorry man. You're truck is done for, bro. If you want though, I'll do ya favor and take it off your hands for like $3k. I mean, might as well, right? Sorry for your loss dude."

How did they check the diff fluid?? Did they stick their finger and and say "oh. No metal flakes on my finger, you're good" ??
The only real way (as far as I know) to do this would be to remove the drain plug, let the fluid drain, and then inspect the magnet on the drain plug.
That would require new fluid, of course. Probably worth doing.

Other possibilities with 'whining noise on acceleration:
    • Wheel bearings
    • drive shaft carrier bearing

I know they didn't change the fluid. they gave me like a card, like they compared the colors of the fluid? Im currently looking for a decent mechanic to look at it. I'm hoping it doesn't require a complete new rear end. Thanks, for the response.

Old post, but just curious if you ever got a solution as to what the noise was. I hear a very similar noise on my 2016 CM with 60k miles.
