Got my trailer!

So yesterday I went and picked up my 8.5ft x 20ft enclosed trailer. I'll be using it to haul my 85 Toyota MR2 around to meets and races. Trailer has plenty of room for the car and gear.
One thing that I figured out, besides needing tow mirrors asap, is that I'll be stopping every couple of hours for fuel. I know trucks and fuel economy don't really go together. I'm just posting this so we can all laugh, and maybe learn something.


So typically around town I get about 14-15mpg. On the highway I average around 17-18mpg. Coming back from getting this trailer I averaged ........

Totally empty trailer. Trailer weighs 3500lb dry. I figure the major fuel suck is due to the wind resistance and not the weight. It does have a v-nose and not a flat one so that should help.

That 7mpg is manually calculated not using the info button, even though it was dang close. Now the highway I was traveling was very hilly and I was staying around 60-65mph. The truck stayed in 4th mostly and was around 3000rpm. Only a few times did it hit 5th or 6th and those were long downhill stretches and not for long.

Next month I'm taking a 1200+ mile trip with this rig loaded with the car, approx 2100lb, and gear, another 500lb or so. I'll be going mostly interstate so at least it shouldn't be as hilly as that highway was. But at least if I end up getting 7mpg my wife won't have to worry about bathroom and stretching breaks as much as I'll be stopping for fuel about every 2 hours!

 

Did you not get the SR5 with the 38 gallon gas tank? I'd love to see more of that mr2.

 

My cousin had a red MR2 we used to cruise around in back in the day. Fun little car for sure.

 

No, I actually couldn't find one that had everything I wanted AND the 38 gallon tank. I'll be keeping some 5 gallon jugs full in the trailer just in case. Also, I LOVE my MR2. I've had this one since around '02 and love it. It has been my daily and I've ran it in SCCA Solo2 events. Definitely a fun car. I did sell it a few years ago when we were going through the adoption process only to have my good friend buy it back from the guy I sold it to and gave it back to me. I scored some mint used OEM tow mirrors on Craiglist, saved a ton. I know a lot of people buy aftermarket but some have been disappointed with vibrations.

That stinks about the MPG's and fuel stops.
