Also got suckered into being the kids’ swim team photographer this summer. My first time shooting swimming, but really enjoyed it.

This is just a reminder that the trail doesn't have to be difficult or gnar gnar level. While that is enjoyable on occasion, sometimes it's just nice to cruise and find the uncrowded views and wide open spaces. Spent an afternoon last week chasing my uncle on his GS while he showed me some areas of San Miguel county that I hadn't seen before. We covered about 80 miles with almost 70 of those being totally off pavement. We saw 2 ranchers on the side of the road near where this photo was taken then no one until we were almost back to Telluride. Beautiful afternoon.

    Slavin_180809_4572.jpg

There were a couple of sections where my uncle put the hammer down on his GS so, naturally, I had to open the truck up a bit and let the Kings do their thing. Really want to make the MT conversion now...

Great shots. Takes me back to when my daughter was swimming in High School and I was made the team photographer. It wasn't based on my photography talent, just that I was the Dad with a "real" camera.

In the past, I've used my iPhone to take pics. I just picked up an entry-level Nikon D5600.

Although mostly I do forum postings and social media I'm looking to step up my photo image quality.
(from a lens the size of a pencil eraser) I've already noticed a big difference in truer colors & sharpness.
I try to reduce the file size from 13 MB down to 100k +/- for faster loading on the forum & social media.

I'm looking to document flaws (before/after) like paint swirls marks (lighting is important) holograms, chips, and scratches.
I picked up a 55mm 5+ macro filter (I chose the Macro filter over the extension tubes or an expensive Nikkor macro lens)
Part of the choice was this 5+ macro filter was a quality product and tubes or a macro lens would take up more bag real estate.

    Here's a couple from my iPhone 6
    [IMG]

Here's the first pics I took with my D5600
    [IMG]

This is fine JPG (Not RAW) 13.41 MB. I now see depth-of-field w/D5600 I didn't have with the iPhone.

I see I'm going to have to work on my focal points. Possibly F stops.
I have a sharp door handle. I would have preferred a sharp house window.

I'm looking to take quality photographs (not iPhone pictures)
Any help with subject composition, angles, etc. would be helpful.

how tall of a tripod and how much do you want to spend?

manfrotto, gitzo and really right stuff would be my first choices. mefoto and three legged thing are solid choices too. i have a three legged thing carbon that is stable with a 70-200/2.8 lens but the ball head is strong enough to support anything bigger. for hiking, you'll want something with carbon legs.

that being said, i also have a couple of joby gorillapods with ball heads that are insanely stable. lately, they've been my goto for hiking. yea, it's short but it'll hold a 1DC with a 70-200/2.8. bonus, you can wrap it around poles, branches, etc if you need to get higher.

I 2nd smslavin’s recommendations. Go to a camera store and decide if you like twist lock or clamp lock legs. I recommend the MeFoto Roadtrip (twist) and Manfrotto BeFree (clamp). They make those in aluminum or pricier and lighter carbon fiber. Also test out heads that attach to the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera as you may develop a preference.
