Double Tow Questions

So I am in the market for a trailer and boat combo, that my truck would be able to pull and still meet my states double towing regulations as well as match my truck's capabilities.

The trailer will have to be a bumper pull and will need to be able to have a 3-5k boat hooked onto the back of it. The total length of the truck, Travel trailer and Boat cannot surpass 65ft.

I am thinking something along these lines:
Truck length = 19ft
Boat Towing length = 22ft
Trailer length = 22ft
Truck's GVWR = 7200 lbs
Truck's weight (loaded) = 6100 lbs
Boat Towing weight (loaded) = 4100 lbs
Travel trailer (loaded) = 5000 lbs
Tongue weight = 0.1 * 9100lbs = 910 - 1100lbs
7200 (GVWR) - 6100 (Loaded truck) = 1100lbs (remaining Payload capacity)
1100 (remaining payload capacity) - 910-1100 (tongue weight) = A remaing payload of 0lbs to 190lbs.

So in theory it is possible, I already checked the legal requirements for my State.

Does anyone have some recommendations for the trailer and or boat I should get for this?

I am thinking a fish and ski boat (16-19 ft hull).

I need the TT to be capable of hooking up to a 4k boat, so it needs a high GVWR as well and the trailering equipment.

You wanting a brand new boat? Glass I assume. Check out Ranger's Reata and Angler line of boats if you are looking to buy new.

 

That isn't something I'd want to be doing with a 1/2-ton pickup, even if it is a Tundra.

 

I am actually thinking used for both.

I have set an 18k limit on both. I don't like buying new stuff, the depreciation makes me angry/resentful

 

I wonder what changes with the tongue weight onto the tundra once you add tongue weight to the back of the trailer for the boat? I would assume you hook the trailer up to the boat first then take the tongue weight off the tongue of the tundra, hook up weight distribution and sway then drop the trailer back down on the back of the tundra?

 

Are you planning for brakes on both trailers? Most states require trailer brakes when weight greater than 3,500 lbs

I'm generally not comfortable exceeding 80% of my truck's towing capabilities.

If you do it, definitely use extended tow mirrors, and I recommend a Furion FOS48TPK-BL, always on, works great on the back of our TT. I'd practice pulling the trailer only for a bit. Turning radius would kill me, I'll be honest I wouldn't do the combo myself.

 

Not sure about the 2007, but I know my '13 CM max towing capacity is only 9,000 lbs.

 

I would look for a TT in the 4000 lb range and boat that is close to 3000. You can easily find a 16' boat that totals 3000 and maybe even an 18. Motor choice on the boat will have a big impact. The regular 2 stokes are lightest followed by a Optimax type then 4 cycles & lastly I/Os. My Optimax weighs 100s more than my Black Max did. Best choice in a TT/boat situation is to get a small 5th wheel TT. You will need a TT with a fairly stout bumper. Don't forget that most TT have a 2-5/16' ball and your boat will have a 2". So have both sizes on hand.

 

Personally I wouldn't attempt this. Even with a bigger pickup. One thing is what if you get in a pinch and need to backup? Then what?

 

I would get an in the bed camper and supertruss hitch for the boat.

If this is going to be something you do a few times a year go for the 5th wheel if possible. Just like the OP in the thread you linked, once you experience the difference it's almost impossible to go back. With a 5th wheel the TT seems so much more connected to the truck. This is so important if you're going to add another boat trailer to the back.

Me personally I wouldn't attempt this with anything less than a dually

Yes, I plan on having trailer brakes for both.

I definitely will be using extended tow mirrors and likely a few cameras as well.

Well, I was, but it seems that stability and sway might be a factor that leads me toward a 5th wheel. I was not aware that you could use a 5th wheel with the crewmax...until I saw the other poster.

I actually can't believe this is legal in any state without a CDL.
Just because it is POSSIBLE and LEGAL does not mean it's WISE.
With the Tundra? Never, I wouldn't even consider it.

I do this same thing with a bumper pull and another trailer with my SXS on it and it's stable and legal. I don't go over 65 MPH when towing and get 7-9 mpg's.

I don't have a recommendation on a boat or trailer. But wanted to chime in and let you know it's possible. I'm at exactly 65 Ft with truck/trailer/sxs. I have air-bags, load e tires and find it really long and stable.

At first I was dead set against it and wanted a toy hauler instead. But wife hated all the toy haulers we looked at so...

 

Arizona Revised Statutes 28-1095.G.3 -

A recreational vehicle may pull two units if all of the following conditions are met:

(a) The middle unit is equipped with a fifth wheel and brakes. The middle unit may be a farm vehicle or a horse trailer and shall have a weight equal to or greater than the rear unit.

(b) If the rear unit has a gross weight of three thousand pounds or more, it is equipped with brakes.

(c) The total combined gross weight of the towed units does not exceed the manufacturer's stated gross vehicle weight of the towing unit.

Check the laws for your state and any state that you plan to travel through for legality.

2) BRAKES; how are you going to control ABS braking of truck with missed matched trailer braking systems ??

3) When the "WHIP" starts , do you even have a CLUE why it started and HOW you can regain control without damage & harm to everything around

Is it just me or are the tongue weights figured using fuzzy math? I'd think the boat would put 410 # on the rear of the trailer and the trailer put 500 # on the Tundra.

Good luck finding a travel trailer capable of having that kind of weight placed on the rear bumper and having a fresh water tank in the front big enough to offset the boats tongue weight. Maybe take the outboard off and stow it in the trailers pass through compartment.
