Extended Warranty.

Has anyone had any luck finding a good deal on the Toyota extended warranty? The dealer Im buying my tundra from is asking a lot $$$$$. thanks

 

Apparently the price is negotiable. Tell them you will take it but you are only willing to pay $xx (whatever you think you are willing to pay for it). From what I have heard several people have been able to get it for 60% or 70% of the original offered price.
I never get the warranty on a Toyota so I just declined; never tried to negotiate so I can't speak of personal experience.

each dealer will have a different threshold for what they will sell a Toyota oem ext warranty. you just have to find one willing to start near the basement instead of the 5th floor.

my local dealer would only offer around $2400 with no budging, and this was consistent when I bought 3 different vehicles from them over a span of 2-3 years. so I found another dealer about 100 miles away that would offer the same exact details for between $1155 to $1355 (they varied in terms, 8/100, 8/125 and different vehicle tiers T2 vs T3)

some have bought them for $900 up to $1700.

But, you can take your chances. I didn't get the extended warranty at first (because I also thought - hey, it's a Toyota!). But, I sprang a Cam tower leak at 14,000 miles. They fixed it under warranty, and I contacted Toyota corporate and told them how crappy I thought it was that my brand new truck already had to have the engine opened up. I also told them that I had heard of other Toyota owners receiving free extended warranties when things like this happened. They ended up giving me a free 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty after that.

I see it as $200 yr insurance against catastrophic failures (mostly all the computers now-a-days in these vehicles). I see electronics dying before most of the mechanical stuff goes off the deep end.

 

Tell that to my t-case that was replaced after 8k miles.

Extended warranty here as well. I felt it out to see how the truck went for the 1st 36k....then decided to purchase the extended.

 

Standard warranty will cover all of the needed repairs. I like to evaluate form there, you can always buy an EW later if you think you need it.

I have heard more than once tha EW companies make a lot of money, which tells me they are cashed in on less than you would think.

 

That's why you should only purchase the Toyota Platinum. Those 3rd parties get "stuff fixed" by their 3rd parties.

I have had other cars (especially Chrysler) where I had the warranty and needed it. My last 4 vehicles were/are Toyotas; I did not get the warranty on any of them, and never needed it on any of the previous ones. At $2,000 each I would have been in for $8,000 in warranties. The Tundra is still new, but even if something happens after I run out of manufacturer's warranty, I think I am still ahead. Very few issues will cost more than $8,000 to fix.

 

My dealer offered an extended warranty at half off when I told them I was financing thru my credit union. They did this before I even tried negotiating a better deal.

We are talking about an extended warranty. Your factory warranty covered your transfer case I imagine with that low of miles.

You said "no warranty needed". I took that as no warranty at all. Although it is tooted here often - Toyotas (especially Tundras) are not problem-free.

My factory warranty ran out at 36,000 miles. At 39,000 miles, I decided to go ahead and upgrade my suspension. Prior to upgrading, I was noticing a popping noise coming from my front end. When I dove in to install my new suspension, I found that my upper ball joints were shot. I also found that one of my front shocks was leaking.

My lower ball joints started seeping at around 50,000 miles, and I am now at about 67,000 miles and will be replacing them soon. None of these front end issues would be covered by factory warranty (especially the lower ball joints - since they would blame that on my new suspension).

Not a "ton" of problems, but a hell of a lot more than what either of my 4Runners have given me (which has been none).

Personally, I would wait until your factory warranty is up. No need to hand over your money early. I have only purchased an extended warranty once in my life. It was one that they would reimburse me the cost of the warranty if I didn't use it. Not many places have that any longer. Extended warranties are available because the companies make money off of them. Some people like "peace of mind" but not me. I'll roll the dice (unless I get my money back if I don't use it).

 

You can purchase these Toyota Platinum warranties only while within your factory warranty. And some people did wait, but ended up regretting waiting since the dealer that had the smoking good deals doubled the price over night.... had to search high and low to find one even close to what they had offered.

 

Didn't know that. I guess it makes sense to buy them at purchase time, if you are interested in one. I know less than I thought I did.

 

all Toyota oem ext warranty have a 30-60 day full refund policy. after that it is pro-rated refund if never used or transferrable to the next owner (1 time). the pro rated refund is based on mileage and/or time frame from inception date on the front cover of the Toyota ext warranty booklet.

we bought a 2016 Tacoma and paid I think $1355 for 8/100. since we never used it after trading in for a tundra, the dealer paid out I think $9xx after 2 years of it being in effect.

edit : since the mileage was under 19k they took the higher of the two used values. mileage or time (months)

 

I was sending over about 2-3 people a week to this dealer from the 4-runner forum and informed the dealer they would be losing a TON of customers... they didn't seem to care.So I found another dealer that's almost as good... so they get all the business now. You can get the warranty from day one or within 3 years or 36,000 miles.

 

This is true info. But I do think it's a 30 day full refund and after that it is pro-rated.

 

Cancellation : You can cancel your VSA within 30 days for a full refund, less a $50 processing fee (as permitted by state law). Cancellations will be prorated if applied for after 30 days or if a claim is paid. Please see your dealer for state-specific cancellation policies.

Transferability : Coverage can be transferred once, at no cost, from the original owner to a private party; this excludes dealers (see Terms of Agreement).

the transfer option is a good selling point if you are doing a private party sale, and you could re-coup the cost more so than doing a pro-rated refund, just a thought.

Transaction was smooth and all paperwork was legit for Toyota Financial Services Platinum Zero deductible warranty.

 

I purchased an 8 year / 125,000 Platinum warranty w/0 deductible for $1570. Purchased couple days after I bought the truck from an out of state dealer. Also, paid no sales tax. Best my dealer would do was 7 year / 100,000 for around $1700 plus tax.

Wasn't sure I was going to do it since reliability should be great. However, for the cost I decided to go ahead with the warranty.

 

I agree - I emailed her and had a response within an hour. Contract purchased within minutes, receipt and copy of contract in mail to me that day and plan documents from Toyota within a week or so.

 

One thing to remember is these are not really 7 year/100,000 warranties. Powertrain warranty with the vehicle is 5yr/60,000. So you are basically paying all that money for 2 year/40,000 miles, or whatever warranty you go with. I'll take my chances and keep my $$$.

 

Not quite. The 5yr/60,000 warranty is only for powertrain components. Crap like suspension/electronics/body/steering is only covered with the 3yr/36K. My 7/100,000 is bumper-to-bumper. Not just powertrain. So you are paying for 4 extra years and 64K of bumper-to-bumper coverage.

 

Uhhh....your original comment specified absolutely nothing in regards to time or otherwise. "Its a Toyota. No warranty needed". Yes its a Toyota, yes I needed warranty; original, or extended - doesnt matter, I needed a warranty.
