Alarms

So.... I'm a pretty handy person. I have done most mods on both my trucks by myself. Electrical wiring not really my thing. But.... alarms are inexpensive enough, shops charge an arm and a leg to install them.

Can I do it myself? How advanced is installing a alarm with remote start? Anyone on here done it and have a write up or video? I'm looking at doing a CrimeStopper.

 

Pay once cry once, have a shop do, I got a viper with tilt, window break sensor, backup batt n back up siren, 750$

Car alarms themselves are cheap, I used to sell Vipers and the basic Viper 300 (model at the time) cost us about $65.00.. we sold them for $249 installed.. which gave you shock detection and door protection. Door locks was an extra $100, pin switches $50 per opening.
An alarm is only as good as the install.. so do your research and find a reputable shop.
You dont want someone hacking up your wire harness and creating electrical problems.

 

So I just got a quote for a Viper alarm. It's a DS4VP with remote start 9756V installed. $682! If I want tracking and phone controls it's $972.... Does this sound right?

I rememeber spending like $350 for python alarm with ignition kill for my taco 12 years ago. Lol

I have the 5706 viper remote start and love it. I dont have the phone option as that seems like the DS4VP is all about. For the whole phone app tho make sure u dont have to pay monthly fees. I think they have 1 that has full gps and tracking but monthly fee is due

 

Yeah. It's 100 year I think. Not gonna do that. I feel like my new Android radio will have a tracking app

 

The main reason to have it professionally installed is because the warranty will be void if it's not installed by a qualified shop. Not only did I get the Viper warranty I also have a warranty with the shop that installed it.

 

I just got another quote. This for the 5305v with db3 attachment. Shop actually has better reviews, lifetime on labor and product. And for $450

 

For what it's worth, pay a reputable authorized dealer to install it. I used to install alarm systems back in the late 80's and early 90's. With today's ECM's and technology, I was too chicken to install my own remote start, let alone a modern alarm system. I might have tried it, had I had a Tundra that wasn't brand new, and I knew I wouldn't be jeopardizing the factory warranty, or even worse, worried about frying one of the computers. Sometimes, it's better to pay the professionals, and then if something is wrong, it's their issue, not yours. Again, just my 2 cents.

 

5305 range is only 1/4 of a mile tho. Thats why its cheaper. The other remote is 1 mile

When comparing pricrs always compare same systems. Like apples 2 apples. I learned this the hard way when i was younger. Would go for cheaper price but product is completly different just my .02

 

But for the price ... Do I need a mile range? .25 mile seems good. Lol

 

I have the 5706 that supposedly has a 1 mile range. But that’s with clear line of sight and no interference. In reality, the range is decent but not that great. Sometimes it doesn’t work when I start the truck in the parking lot of my work, and that’s probably only 200-300 feet away.

 

Stay away from Best Buy! They messed up my 10 Tundra and shorted the wires. They then had to pay a Toyota dealership to fix it. They’ll have good prices on the alarm+Remote start packages for Viper and Crime Stoppers, but, don’t let them install it.

 

I was able to rather easily install a Fortin remote start on my truck that was 6 months old. Dove right in and have zero regrets. Just did plenty of research and followed the wiring diagrams. Easy peasy...

 

You can get a Fortin Evo-one programmed with installation instructions and only the wires you need to use left out, from Tech12volts.com for the same price or less than buying the evo-one elsewhere. Check them out.

Also, since yours is a 2017 with the G key, there is a Fortin plug and play harness for yours that makes the install even easier.

Fortin and Crimestopper are the same company.

Hey, reviving a really old post here I guess. Wanted to ask a specific question about your 5706. Were you able to program the way the truck beeps when you press arm / disarm? Here's a link to videos of what I'm experiencing: Viper 5706V - too many sounds on lock and unlock!!
I've read the entire instruction manual at least three times now. Called the guy who installed it but he wants me to come back into his shop to have him reprogram. Would be great if I could figure it out on my own. I haven't found this discussion really anywhere on the internet so IDK if I'm just being dense or what...

Basically there are two different sounds that happen when I arm/disarm my truck.

• Arm/Lock:
  • Lower pitch - chirps once
  • Higher pitch - chirps twice (I would like to turn this off entirely)
• Disarm/Unlock:
  • • Lower pitch - chirps twice
    • Higher pitch - chirps six times!!!! (I would like to turn this off entirely)

 

Wow mine definitely doesn’t do that. Mine on lock is just one beep and that’s it. I didn’t program it tho. A buddy did as he works at a shop. He did his magic.
