I just washed the truck after a week at mammoth and towing my trailer I noticed 1 of my back tires has some damage. I checked all my other tires but only this 1 rear tire seems to have a chunk torn out of it. They are toyo mt open country. Do you think it was from towing or just something in the road or maybe a defective tire? They are about 2 years old now with a lil over 20,000 miles on them. Does it look safe or should i consider changing it?

Agreed. I would bring them back to the shop you got them at and see if you can get replacement under warranty. Not sure what Toyos warranty mileage is but worth a shot.

Hell no that doesn’t look safe. That’s more than just a chunk, that looks like it’s starting to separate.

Yea as much as I want to say defective, it looks like something really got ahold of it. Almost like it got lodged in the tire and was eventually ripped out. But like they said, it's worth a shot at trying to get a warranty.

man that looks really scary. happy you made it home ok. it actually looks like separation of rubber from the mold to me. but what do i know. lol. like cheap chinese retread tires done in someone's backyard. i would really fight it and have them replaced under warranty. if the shop wont replace i would call toyo. a very good complaint letter goes a long way from experience ... plus tire defects are a life and death situation.

good luck man. please let us know what the outcome is.

so I just got off the phone with toyo they said I am covered for 5 years under warranty but that I will have to go to the tire shop where I purchased my tires and have them inspect the tire and they would credit me for the value of the tire or they may just switch it out for a new one I will be going over there today on my way home from work and hope for the best :fingerscrossed:

Have the shop look over ALL the tires while they are at it. That's scary as hell!

Besides the chunk out, that crack spans a good quarter of the tire and it’s not a clean cut, looks defective to me. I can’t imagine what you would run over to create that pattern. If not, how common does chunking cause the rest of the tire to fracture like that? I would think that’s not normal.

That doesn’t look like a defect at all since it has a deep line to go with the chunk.
I would replace ASAP If it was me.

2018 Tundra 1974 Edition with only 8300 miles has exactly the same problem with a front tire, it's even worse than yours...will have the dealer replace it when I go to next oil change.
QUESTION: Should I ask to replace just the damaged tire? Both fronts or all 4 ?

I’d be trying to push for all four new tires. Now they’re going to be spinning at different rates. Plus how can you trust the rest of them they all came from the same batch?

This isn't going to be ruled a separation, they'll determine this to be a road hazard. If it was a separation it would be down in between the tread blocks also, a solid continuous line, but it is mostly just in the tread, like whatever caused this wasn't deep enough to cut all the way into the tire and just skipped along the tread blocks. Also if it were a separation, there would be a huge knot in the tire where the cut is. Either way it needs to be replaced.

This is road hazard. I have a couple tires like this on my truck with chunks out of a couple lugs. Mine are not this deep, and yours I would change out.

This is caused by spinning a tire on an object that started slicing the tire and finally got deep enough to remove a lug. My Jeep has a couple like this as well, but not to this extreme.

When towing or off-road, spinning tires can cause this. If the tire is wet or in water, be even more careful. Wet rubber cuts easier than dry rubber.

I took it back to the tire shop and they took a few pics and said they will contact toyo and see about getting a replacement that was on Saturday
