High Angle CV boots for Long Travel, 2nd/3rd gen

I bought the rebuild kit. It only camp with boots, grease for outer/inner and clamps. No snap rings

 

The kit does come with a new snap ring, looking through some of the photos I seen I had a few couple of snap rings in the rebuild kit. Couldn't find a part # just for it though.

 

I know the company Downey off road is not around any more but I got a set of cv boots from them that were made in a spiral not a bellows and a much thicker rubber than the stock ones for my 91 toy 4x4. They also had a trick lt axle set up that would slide in and out like a driveshaft when the suspension would cycle. The end that went into the front diff housing had a ujoint instead of a cv joint

 

I remember Downey and used to buy from them over 20 years ago. They kind of fell behind the times with product development and the advent of internet sales.

I also remember seeing their thicker spiral CV boots in their catalog. Did they work?

 

They did but I sold the truck shortly after I installed them. So I don't know how long they lasted(wish I would have kept that truck)

 

The shop in Vegas charged me $80 to swap my LT axles in with new boots and no leaks. Dropped them off and 3hrs later picked them up - now ya got me thinking that maybe i should have them replace the boots since the front is torn apart just because. Cheaper than the tool.

 

I guess I need to drive to vegas

 

UPDATE

drivers side CV grenaded on day 1 of the Sequoia trip last Thu. The cage in the outer joint broke apart. When I removed the boot, it looked like there was still plenty of grease in the joint.

I'll probably give the sdhq boots a shot and see what happens.

How was the trip? Did you keep running?

 

Just the cage broke in the out joint. Everything else was good

Yeah man! I got lucky. The outer housing that holds the hub together was intact. I stuffed a rag and used gorilla tape in the differential hole to keep the dirt out. I finished out the trip in 2wd and made it all the way home. Almost 400 miles total LOL

yep! Inner splines intact and the star looks good (but it'll end up in the trash anyway).

I'm gonna buy an oem axle assembly and swap the shaft.

I might start carrying a spare assemble, but its gonna cost almost $1k so I haven't decided lol

Carrying a spare LT is costly, but next time you might not be able to be limp out the whole trip in 2wd.

Have you called any salvage yards? A lot in socal area. Might be able to salvage a good axle.. or maybe a few. And you can carry around spare inners and outers

 

Yeah that true. Thats why I'm considering carrying a spare.

Well I need to buy an LT axle and I don't want to have to tear apart an axle assembly on the trail, easier to just carry a whole assembly. I can swap that out in under an hour

But I might just fix my broken one and hold out for RCV. then I can use those as spares when I upgrade

 

So I had Pro Gear install some OEM CVs onto my axle and I'm testing out a set of SDHQ boots. They look good, but we'll see what happens.

For now I'm just going to carry an inner joint and outer housing on the trail. the inner is easy to swap and if I break an outer or the axle, I can use the outer housing to hold the hub together and install the inner into the diff to act like a plug.

 

Damn you @osidepunker I just got under my truck to replace the last broken part and noticed my pass side inner CV boot is cracked and leaking all over the place. Flung grease everywhere. But I can't complain too much cause they lasted 4yrs without leaking. Now I guess the truck isn't done cause I have to pull the pass side axle and replace the boots. Maybe I should drop them off at the place that built them in the first place since they never leaked.

 

I'm trying the sdhq boots on the drivers side, but I haven't put any miles on them yet so we'll see

 

I just bought the Toyota CV rebuild kit.

 

were they a rubber-ish material? or a hard plastic-ish material?

 

I'm going to pick up that same kit tomorrow so I can rebuild my driver side CV. The shitty boot on the aftermarket axle, that I swapped in 2 months ago, cracked already. Good thing I kept the original axle.


A more rubbery boot is better, ye? Less likely to crack at severe angles?

 

I bought an oem kit for my 1st gen Tacoma and it was hard plastic and didn’t clamp well. No matter what clamp I used.
I like sdhq material. Or aftermarket rubber/hi angle boot.

 

I just opened them and they are a hard plastic material. Yeah I don't care for them. I am sure a stock tundra doesn't use these. WTF . Figured buying from the dealer I would get what should work best.

 

Oooh, good thing I forgot to go pick that kit up yesterday. Looks like the hunt continues.
