Leer 100 XR

Jusrlt curious if anyone has one and what their opinion is about the cap, what they like or don’t like. I got a quote from local dealer with dog screens, carpet on the inside and OTD was $2200.

 

I have a Leer 100 XQ so it’s a bit different than the one you’re looking at. I like the look of it, especially the frame-less rear window.

This one has the removable front window which is nice for cleaning the rear window of the truck, and also if I have the dogs in the back I can roll down the crewmax window to have better access to them. It’s a nice feature but I don’t use it that often.

I also have the roof rack rails and some time down the road will probably add crossbars or a cargo basket or platform.

The thing I like best about it is the electric lock. That combined with the pop & lock for the tailgate is wonderful to have. No messing with keys, just use the key fob to lock/unlock all doors, tailgate, and shell. It’s one of those little things that makes a huge difference.

The two downsides of having a shell:
Can’t haul something tall.
Can’t make other truck drivers jealous when I roll down the rear window.

 

I enjoy my XR and I sold Leer for 12 years, and it is worth the extra over the 100R and while might be bias was never a fan of the fit of ARE the other leading topper company. Price shop and beat them up, happened to me and I would move, also get their coupon they have online can usually save you average of $100. The frameless back door is worth it and sliding windows get the most vented air into the bed.

Im with @silverhack in it does have those 2 down falls but I prefer the security and ease to haul my kayaks to the lake with the rack I have, just not in the picture.

 

I got my 100XR a little over a month ago and like it so far. I got the removable front window so I can roll down my rear window and have some more air flow for the dog. There were a couple issues at first but my dealer was great about taking care of them. The color match was spot on as well. Paid $2385 OTD with carpet headliner, removable front window, and roof rack tracks (no crossbars yet).

 

Oops, forgot to mention the removable and slider window was part of my quote too. Gotta have it with th crewmax snd ability to roll down the back window.

 

I ordered one about 2-3 weeks ago. Can't wait to have some cover back there. removable front window, dog screen guards, roof tracks (already have cross bars), ceiling mounted cargo hooks. I wanted the electric lock but it was a nearly 200 addition, i may do it myself later on, if I do a pop n lock on the tailgate.

FYI

This is literally the exact same kit you would have gotten with your topper. This includes the new handle you will need to be able to have the lock. You can also just piggy back off the wires you use and only run one set of wires into the cab and only install tha actuator in the tailgate.

 

I have the 100R.
I prefer the double lock metal frame back window-little more secure and solid.
(Seems like the single lock SUV style back windows are a bit cheesy and weak.)
Removable slider, no liner, hard wired dome light..$1650.00 out the door.

 

Thanks for sharing this. So is the only difference between the 100R and 100XR the single turn latch and the external double latch system? Without the liner, do you ever notice any leaking?

 

Pretty much the only difference...although the XR shell is really a XQ shell( louvred side window) with a slider installed instead...which doesn't look quite right to me( inset too far and not quite the same shape). Whereas the 100R was designed for the slider.

On a side note: I notice every single latch widow on trucks in town...the latch is always somewhat off kilter and never returning to full horizontal if that make sense. I think it's the cable mechanism loosening up inside. Just a peeve of mine...it should work perfect considering you just spent 2 grand on a shell! Also with a single latch-if someone breaks a side window all they have to do is reach in and pull the exposed latch cable and it will open the back window even though it's locked! With the double keyed latch that wouldn't happen and at least make it harder for some one to steal your stuff.

I did get a bit of leaking up at the front of where the shell rests on the bed rail during some heavy rains while camping a couple of weeks ago. From the bulb seal not seated correctly at the front corner during installation... So I loosed the shell to adjust it...should do the trick.

As far as felt headliners go: I think they collect dust and the insulation factor is minimal. And besides, we sleep in the bed of the truck and not on the ceiling so why pay extra "plushness".

 

Not sure what you mean here. My sliders and sliders on every other cap I've seen fit perfectly into the spaces. You might be thinking of the ARE CX series? The windows on those don't fit the "cutout" exactly.

If someone is willing to break a window the double latch system isn't going to be more of a deterrent than the single canter latch...

It looks better, which is subjective, but you can get the carpet on any model (and Leer often includes it free). Also, without carpet there are all those little fiberglass shards poking at you if you're crawling around back there. It's so cheap to add that it's kind of silly not to.

I had a lot of customer who had leaky toppers with the 100R and not a while lot can be done.

The XR is the same mold as the XL and other unit is it’s own mold.

The handles move because the nut inside losses up and the handle can move, get a vise grips and it’s fixed.

The large thing about leaking is one topper can fit different on 5 trucks and each person can have different results.

I didn’t like ARE cause after time the base rails break away from the topper and causes headaches. Now that’s not to say Leer doesn’t have problems but I like the look of Leer much more over ARE IMO

 

So would you guys say the 100R is more for a utilitarian purpose camper shell with the double latch and full frame window and the 100XR is more for looks and style? My main purpose for the shell is to keep kid crap dry on our three hour road trip when we go visit family, and it’ll be to keep the woofers dry during duck season.....as well as my gear.

Would you guys mind posting pictures of your trucks with shells...both 100R and 100XL?

 

I suppose it boils down to "personal preference".
I like the 100R and it's less expensive, but that's just me.
Either model will serve you well.

What do you mean only install the actuator in the tailgate? Isn't there an actuator for the cap lock too? And GD why is it so expensive!

 

You could call up pop n lock and tell them you need just the actuator only and use some of your own wires to save money from their whole kit they sell

Yes it’s expensive but the kit I listed comes with the new handle vs the XR handle that can’t take the remote kit. When I sold these we sold the kit alone for $170 then the handle separately for like $50.

For the topper you do, just the actuator for the tailgate

 

Question for you all. How does the 100XR attach to the bed? Clamps or rail inserts? On Leer's website it only lets me build a cap without the rails. Had a 100r on my Tacoma and that attached via an insert into the rails. Just curious before I order mine. Thanks!

 

It depends on the shop and the truck. If you have rails in a Tacoma or Tundra it will use the rails with a piece of aluminum that goes in the tracks. If you don’t have rails it should be what is called a j clamp or some shops use a standard old topper c clamp. Hope it helps but make sure the shop uses the proper clamps from Leer.

 

My dad has a 2014 Tundra and a 100XR. The shop he bought his cap from used rail inserts.

 

Ok great. Thanks. That’s the route I would prefer going but was thinking it wasn’t available since I couldn’t get it to show up on Leer’s website for bedrail mounts.

As noted in another thread make sure they clamp it in the bed rail and not the sheet metal. Not sure what leer uses but here is a clamp on my snugtop.

 

Thanks for the info. Went to the Leer dealer today and they were thoroughly confused about mounting the cap into a rail insert. Said the only option I had was the standard c clamp. Found that hard to believe. Going to call around and see if I can find a better shop.

 

The C clamp also goes into the bedrail as well. Im not sure if it was leer or ARE but ive seen it. They use a c clamp.

 

Here is one option and this is froom leer. Uses a T nut

 

^ Thats exactly how my Leer 100R on my Tacoma mounted but they required a “tab” so to speak in the fiberglass to bolt through. Found these that should work with the rails in the same way a standard C Clamp would.
