Spray wax / detailer recommendations?

I’m interested in after wash sprays (detail spray or light wax). After the last wash (just 2 bucket w/ mr pink with a dry) the finish was looking dull. I expected more from the McKees high def. but after using the CG speed wipe it shined back up nice. Also the sprinklers hit the back passenger side of the bed so I usually end up with hard water spots. After using the speed wipe a few days ago I don’t have any water spots after the last three sprinkeler runs.

The rub on wax like Butter Wet Wax takes about 45 min to an hour (iirc) for me to do the whole truck. The speed wipe takes about 20 min: just spray on and wipe off, no need to lube up an applicator, try to spread evenly, then buffing off takes extra time vs detail spray application because usually I find extra dry spots of the wax that requires extra buffing.

I’m assuming the spray ons only last a week or so, which is fine. I can take 20 min or so after drying to do a quick trip around the truck. Preferably something that’s ok to apply in the sun. I may not get to it right after drying, so may have to apply it later in the afternoon when kids are napping. Last few weeks I’ve been ok to get the wash in first thing in the morning while the truck is still in the shade. If not recommend, I can always do it after the sun goes down and the truck has had time to cool.

Getting something that could be used between washes would be nice too, but I understand those may introduce marring since it’s potentially rubbing the dirt that gets picked up on the towel across the paint work (yes, use a clean part of the towel each time you lift it off the paint, and do short wipes, left to right & working top to bottom, not circular motions, but still...)

If using as a drying aid, I like Griots Garage Spray wax. Very economical to use, and available locally if you have a Pep Boys or autozone nearby. It will give you 1-2 weeks, and is carnuba-based, if that makes a difference to you. For a quick detailer, I use Chemical Guys P40, which has some carnuba in it. I've not used the Sonax product you mentioned, but their stuff is typically top-shelf.

 

I use chemical guys hybrid v7 quick detailer!

 

Meguiars quick wax cant be beat. I buy it in the gallon jugs. Leaves a really slick feel and helps keep that wax fresh

 

I sometimes use the Chemical guys Speed wipe!

WG-3700 which has the rinseless wash option. Seems like a very virsitile product with great reviews. It’s in my cart and I’ll probably pull the trigger tomorrow

I have super hard water, does that matter? I know the idea is to work with tap water, but seems like YMMV greatly based on hardness of your water...

 

Seems like a lot of people on here give the reload great reviews, I need to pick some up I think. I think someone was saying the

WG-3700 was on par with Echo2, so maybe give the Wolfgang a shot in its place...?

Still early to tell. I’ve used the Mirror Bright quite a bit, and it shines up very well. I haven’t used the Sonax on my truck yet, but it does repel water better than anything else I’ve tried over the counter. From what I can tell, I think the Sonax will be better. I’ve only used it on a white vehicle though, so it’s hard to tell about the shine. I’ll hit a panel with it this evening and let you know.

 

I have super hard water also. On a regular wash, I have to dry very quickly. The rinseless washes combat this. Optimum No Rinse especially is marketed to neutralize hard water.

I have three rinseless wash products, all of which do a great job, but with some minor differences:

ONR - Easiest to use, most forgiving. Cleans very well, and leaves minimal coating. Works very well on top of any sealant you already have.

Wolfgang WG-3700 - Seems thicker, can streak if not wiped quickly. Leaves a decent coating.
Carpro Ech20 - Also thicker, and can streak if not wiped quickly. Leaves the best coating of the three. Most expensive of the three.

Detail sprays:

Maguiar’s Mirror Bright - Works the best out of the ones you can buy at Wal-Mart, Auto Zone, etc. Very good shine, and easy to find.

Combo of Carpro Reload and Ech20 - Best all around. Cleans very well, leaves a great shine and some sealant. The disadvantage is the cost and availability. You have to buy both products, and neither is cheap. Not available in retail spaces. Great products to have if you have the money to spend.

Sonax - This one is somewhat confusing. It says detail spray, but the instructions call for the vehicle to already be clean. That says sealant to me more than detail spray. I haven’t tried it on anything but an already clean vehicle, so I’m not sure how well it works otherwise. The hydrophobic properties of it blow the others out of the water though. I might say it’s even better than Reload when it comes to that, but longevity is unknown to me at this point. It’s also not available in local stores that I’ve seen.

Straight Sealants -

Hydro2 is probably the top of the line. Super easy to apply, but expensive.
Reload - Amazing shine, great water repellent. Second only to Hydro2 in ease of use. I’ve used this on almost every vehicle I’ve done. My favorite so far, depending on further testing with Sonax.
Opti-Seal - Very Hydrophobic, pretty easy to use. Doesn’t shine as well as the others. I’ve seen where people mix it in with their bucket of ONR, but haven’t tried it yet.

These are just my opinions. Others have things they like better.

I have a ton of this stuff. I’d be glad to put together samples of all of them for you. Then you could decide what you like best and stock up on it for your use. I can mail it or meet you somewhere. Just let me know.

My only question is: what is the longevity of the spray sealants and if the must be applied to a vehicle with no existing wax or sealant? Ok... that was two questions... whatever lol

Reload for one is supposed to last 3-6 months. The lower end is on a daily driver. I can’t say for sure, since I tend to apply stuff nearly every time I wash. That leads to your other question: It’s supposed to be one product at a time, so the sealant can bond directly to the paint.
My truck is generally only coated with Hydro2 and Reload. I put Hydro2 on every couple of months, and Reload every couple of weeks. I haven’t left it alone long enough to test the 3-6 month claim. I’m probably way too heavy handed with it.

Most of the other stuff I’ve tried was on my other vehicles, aside from a panel here and there. I’m considering going with Sonax next time I do mine.

You can’t go wrong with the ONR, especially if you’re using sealants on top of it. It’s by far the most popular brand among detailers.

 

Yes like Steve said, I don't see any reason why the WG- 3700 wouldn't work. Neither I or Corey have tested the

WG-3700 here at the shop so we aren't sure just how well it will work. We have only tested the use of Echo2 and the Ultima waterless wash when mixing it together with the reload. Im sure the other waterless washes should work just as well, but I cant guarantee the results like I can the ones we have tested. Every wash is a little bit different and may provide a different quality of results.

One thing we can say for certain in regards to water hardness is that the difference in the results you get will be in how you actually apply the product and how you dry it off.
When you have harder water is is suggested to just use a little more product then the suggested amount when making your dilution. However ensuring that the water/waterless wash combo doesn't dry on your vehicle is the key to preventing waterspots and ensuring that the product does the best job possible. So as you are applying it/ working the product in, make sure it is dried off relatively quickly by towel.

Let us know how it works out if you end up testing the combo. We always like other options to give to our customers if it suits their needs better than what we can offer them.

ONR wash and shine or wash and wax? I’m guessing shine since applying reload on top of it.

The ONR seems to be “soak MFs in solution (2oz ONR to 2 gal water). Wipe entire panel with solution soaked MFs. Dry panel.” I’ll probably just use it in a spray bottle with distilled water and a stack of clean MF towels. The truck doesn’t get THAT dirty usually, so seems like that’s the best/quickest way. I’ll get some reload to try on top then maybe play with mixing it.

I’ve got the McKees HighDef sealer on there. Is the ONR going to lift that off and the spray waxes/sealers is for use in its place? Looks like hydro 2 is supposed to be a base sealer, with reload as more of a topper.

Edit: Reload says to use on clean paint (paint should be clean of solvents and wax)....

I had the ONR with wax, but didn’t care for it. In my opinion, doing the bucket wash with it is just as fast as using a spray bottle.
I don’t think the ONR will strip the McKees off. I go over Reload with it quite a bit and haven’t noticed it removing the seal. If you want it off before you use it, you can get some Eraser or something similar.

I use Hydro2 as base and Reload as topper like you mentioned.

 

I like the highdef and don’t want it off... also have a bottle of it I’d like to use up before moving to another sealant... but I sad that about BWW too, so I guess we’ll see LOL

I use ech2o for waterless wash and quick detailing. I also will add some reload at times to kick it up a notch. I just did my whole truck in reload and it came out great.
And I'll use hydro2 in a months or so and every few months as a quick sealant for protevtion.
I haven't played around with any spray waxes per se but am planning to. I may use a waxaddict product or maguire's untimate spray wax on the recommendation of @SouthBoundSteve who said its similar to a sealant.

 

I have heard good things about griots speed shine and spray wax. Its readily available and inexpensive as well
