How many buy a fifth, really nice tire/wheel for the spare?

Might be pulling the trigger on a different wheel/tire setup soon and am thinking of just picking up a basic steel rim the same size and similar offset to the new setup and running a basic tire the same size as the others. Doesn't really make sense to me to buy a really nice wheel and tire to stick under the truck. Anyone else do this or am I smoking crack?

I kept my stock 18” OEM spare, but I have oversized 20” wheels with 37” tires.

I'm going the other way. I have a 20" spare but am dropping to 18". The offset between the old and new setup could be as much as 50mm as well.

I’m really happy with the stock TRD Pro rims and don’t plan to change them. I could not find anyone willing to sell and ship a single pro rim at an affordable price. My solution was to get a OEM TRD rim (exactly the same machining but slightly different polished aluminum flats) and paint it black to match. It’s not exact, but you cannot tell it is different from 4’ away. I got a used tire of the same size with almost zero wear for this rim and it is my current spare.

I don’t plan to drive too far or very long on the he spare, so I didn’t see it necessary to change it whenever I upgraded the wheels and tires. Plus, I have since then made several mods to the truck’s undercarriage that worked around the stock spare. Stuff like exhaust, lifts, train horn, and other electronics and mechanical upgrades.

I think that a lot of people get a 5th rim.

#1 - For those who have tires in the 35in range, you want to have a similarly sized spare, otherwise you will mess up your diff. If you put that spare on the +60 offset wheel, it is gonna rub like a mofo

#2 - Many people rotate the spare into the mix with the other 4 wheels/tires... I had issues with my old tundra where the spare was so old that the tire wasn't even safe to use, despite the fact that had NEVER been used. Rubber doesn't last forever, especially when it is next to a hot exhaust. So I had to toss a tire with ZERO miles on it. Waste of $$ And if you DO rotate your spare in, do you want to have one wheel that doesn't match the others?

#3 - Your tires are smaller when the tread runs down than when new. If you put on a NEW spare that is a slightly different size bc it has 100% tread left.... see #1 above.

I would have preferred to do the 5 tire rotation also, but my TPMS is only able to monitor 4 sensors and i am not interested in reprogramming every time i rotate tires.

You don't really have to reprogram every rotation. As long as you don't mind one of your tires not being monitored. But as long as 4 of them are programmed and even if it's under the bed, the light won't go on.

haha.... Yeah, I forgot about that issue bc when I put on hew wheels I didn't even bother putting on TPMS. I've driven for almost 30 years without it, so it wasn't a big deal to me.

Planning on buying another 295/70R18 to match, still stuck between getting a cheap tire in that size or just buying another RG. Will definitely be buying a matching wheel though.

I bought 5 tires/rims for my Taco and did 5-tire rotations (not the first vehicle I did this with). On my Tundra, I picked up a larger tire for the spare to match what I'm running, but it's still on the stock steel rim. It stays hidden underneath the truck unless/until needed, so I don't care what it looks like.

In my entire lifetime of owning pickup trucks and SUVs , only once I have ever needed to change a tire or a spare. At that time, I tried to jack up the vehicle, but the weight of the vehicle made it difficult for me to fit the jack under the vehicle. So, I ended up calling AAA and they came out and towed my vehicle to the nearest tire shop. :) I guess that it would be very important to me if I did any type of off-roading. Anything could go wrong whenever you off-road.

Good input. After reading the replies, I think I'm gonna end out landing on a basic steel wheel the same dimensions and as close to the same offset as the new wheels as possible. The tire will be same size as the others, but will basically be just a decent enough tire to just get me off of the trail (since that seems the most likely place to have to replace one) and down the highway.

If the 5th wheel isn't going into the rotation, I'd do the steely idea to keep costs down, maybe even get the 5th tire from a used tire place since it's only a crutch until you get the damaged one fixed/replaced.

I'm assuming the whole idea is to ride on a similar size tire/offset for the interim and it's a big difference from the stock spare.

Does the 5th even need to be the same brand if it's the same size and the specs are similar to the 4 new ones?

Correct, no 5th wheel rotation and yes, the difference b'n the stock and new setup is quite a bit. I was thinking of checking the local LKQ/Pull-a-Part/junkyard to see what they had for both the wheel and tire. We have a lot of lifted trucks out here so I imagine I can pick up both pretty cheaply in the config I need. I'm not worried about the brand since it's something that shouldn't be on the truck for more than a few days.

You got me thinking. My spare wheel is 18 like my customs, I'm just going to put a used 295/70R18 on it. There's currently a 2" height difference between my Nitto's and the stock spare Mich which is not a good idea if I'm out of town. Doesn't fix the weight difference since my Methods are heavy which is another factor, hmm.

Just keep in mind when going with a different wheel and tire, there's a very high chance the diameter won't be the same. Just between different brands of the same size can vary about 1/4"-1/2". MT/AT, even more. Then putting it on a narrower wheel will make it off by even more. Plus, even more from the tread wear. Worst case, your spare can potentially be off by 1/2"-1". I do a 5 wheel rotation to make sure they're all the same diameter and also to keep the treads at a similar height. Most of my wheeling trips are usually over 300 miles from home and I'm usually coming home on a Sunday night. That would be a long way to drive putting stress on the diff.

I have a stock 18” polished alloy wheel if you want it. You would only have to pay actual shipping to get it out to you. Let me know.

That's a good point, I'm calling around to make sure the used 295/70R18 are also close to my current 34.2x11.7". If I wheeled, I'd definitely do the exact 5th, but I'm just looking for a close match at less than 1/3 cost. Sorry didn't mean to join in OP, are you wheeling or outlanding?

I’ll have to check the wheel. It’s a stock 2016 Tundra CM SR5, 18” alloy wheel. I took them off my son’s Tundra shortly after I bought it. They have been sitting in my garage ever since. I’ll PM you with the pics and dimensions later whenever I get home.

    Huh, well I'll be damned. It's a 255/70R18 spare for a 285/55R20 setup.

Thanks! Not sure lol, I'd assume they do overlap. At extremes, wheeling could be a day of rock crawling, outlanding could be remote camping several nights. There's probably a thread somewhere that breaks down the differences. I would think someone who RV's long distances should also add to the mix of "should be using exact 5th's".

I've done five tire rotations for a while now. I go off-road a lot and the spare would just eventually dry rot and have to be replaced anyway.

Mainly just day or weekend trips somewhere to have a bit of fun on some rocky trails and hills. Won't have the setup to do any real rock climbing or anything crazy like that. I do camp from time to time, but nothing too terribly remote by any means.
