    replacing instrument cluster bulbs
I will be pulling my instrument cluster on my 2002 Toyota tundra to replace a couple of burned out bulbs (The drive indicator bulb and turn indicator bulb). To minimize having to remove the cluster again, I would like to replace all the commonly used bulbs.

    My question is:
    1) is there a kit available to replace all the bulbs in the cluster?
    Or
    2) are all the bulbs the same so that I can buy several and replace as needed? If they are not all the same, I would appreciate a recommendation as to which bulbs to have on hand when I remove the cluster.

I wonder how much a newer cluster would be. Would be great to upgrade to a newer in case you can afford it. Maybe find one used also. Sorry, OT

Excellent idea to replace all the bulbs while you're at it.

Asking Roman, someone better prepare with a trauma pad, as it will hurt hearing how much it costs. Maybe, he can look for used either 2014 to 2017. I'm guessing the 2018 is more expensive if bought new.

The bulbs shouldn't be too bad. Replacing the whole cluster would be a few pennies. :D

I don’t think that gen2 and gen3 instrument clusters will work on gen1 Tundra. Also, if my memory serves me well, if you replace the instrument cluster, you won’t be able to keep the current mileage of the vehicle on your he new cluster. They are all digital. However, I could be wrong about all that.

Does the truck have a tachometer?

Isn't that illegal? I could buy a cluster and claim the truck has less miles and turn around and sell it to someone that doesn't know what carfax is. I know people do this with cars that have high mileage but they put the numbers in line so they look low. I'm sure it can be adjusted to current mileage.

It’s not illegal to replace a broken instrument cluster. Dealerships do so all the time. It’s illegal to replace the cluster for the intent to defraud! I have replaced about 3 instrument clusters on my classic cars over the years. However, that’s a different thing. Up on restoration of the vehicles as classics/antique, the odometer/mileage were all exempt. Your 2002 Tundra would not fall in the category of an antique or classic vehicle. Nevertheless, I am sure there are ways to fix or replace your broken instrument cluster, because it is also illegal to not have a functional instrument cluster in your vehicle. At least in Florida where I live, it’s illegal.

Well yeah, that was my idea behind the post, the intent to be illegal. In every car forum you go, people upgrade their clusters to the newer models. It might be a federal thing to mess with such systems, but also to have a non-functioning one as you stated. For the cluster to miss a couple of bulbs, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is non-functional. Plus, most coppers aren't that bright to know that the odometer isn't moving while he's driving. Heck, even if there was a way to tell, it would fly right in front of them, and they'd think its functional.
