Anyone guilty of covertly trying to be the golf course of the block? Using a cooking thermometer to test to take your soil temp? Placing weight on back of mower for that darker/lighter combination of lines? Fertilizer year round? Nut or crabgrass? Mowing at 3.5?
    Cmon...you know you do...

My wife put too much weed and feed up in the front to get rid of the field sandburs andand now our front yard looks like a desert

You do realize that green and weed free is a rare thing right? I'm pretty cheap, and I have the time. So many on my street have lawn service and they hack it off so low you almost see the roots!

Where I live, if your grass is that green you’re an asshole LOL
Someone’s bound to yell at you, “don’t you know we’re in a drought”. We are on water restrictions. So I just water mine once a week just enough to keep it from turning to dirt.

We are thinking of of the Rockwall area to retire. Should get a mean looking turf down there right? I know it's hot, but so is California.

That’s OK man. I know I can water more days a week but they charge us pretty good for the water as well. So I just give mine one good soaking a week. I’m a plumber for my local school district and one of my main job descriptions is irrigation. I can appreciate a beautiful lawn.

Many Neighbors all mow really low, pisses me off. They think it will give them longer in between cuts. Our San Augustine needs to be mowed on the your highest setting for healthier lawn, fewer weeds, more drought tolerant. And if you going to mow, edge your sidewalks and driveways and trim / weedeat beds and structures! :smack:

I believe they have different lawns from Houston area, not as much rain up there.

I mix it up. Sometimes it gets too thick so I bring it down real low. Then let it go longer next time. I try to keep it taller in the summer and a little shorter in the winter.

61137CF1-C818-49C9-9CE5-8EAE9BBCAC00.jpg Interesting. Never considered that. I know the grass goes dormant but I’ve winter fertilized and spring and fall seeded to keep it thick. 3.5-3.75 year round. It’s the weeds and thatch crap I fear. Seems to be the only defense. You don’t deal with invasive weeds after a low cut? Root stress?

Nut grass is the devil, but I have him by the neck at the moment.

My grass used to be sod. The gardeners and the birds turned it to pretty much weeds and crabgrass. I can’t fertilize because we’ve got rabbits and dogs. I got rid of the gardeners. My turn!

I took pride in how I transformed my place in the country, I no longer live there and today I prefer a lawn that I can maintain by running a string trimmer for less than 30 minutes.

I live in rockwall. Most have bermuda or st. Augustine. I have Bermuda in the front, st. Augustine in the back. The st. Augustine requires more water, but does a better job of choking out the weeds. Bermuda requires mowing more often.

That said, the soil here has a high clay content (black) which makes it unstable. The soil cracks in the dry months. Most homes here have post tension slab foundations that hold up well with the soil movement.

I think you can drive yourself bonkers trying to keep up with weed killers and nutrients. I end out paying a guy to come out 5 times a year to lay down whatever it is he uses to take care of weeds/errant grasses/etc. His stuff is better than anything I can buy and it ends out costing about the same. I fertilize on my own in late March/early April right after I do my spring scalp and then again in June and September. I use an NPK blend that the local nursery sells for Oklahoma soil. It works far better than anything I've tried at Home Depot/Lowe's/Walmart.

Too funny, wife is opposite. Hurricanes give plenty of warning to get out of dodge but Tornado can get ya in the middle of the night. So we compromised and live in San Antonio :)

Lawns care varies quite a bit depending on the region of country you live in and what type of grass you have. Best to find a local expert (or someone that has a great yard) and follow their guidelines.

In Houston there is a weekend AM radio garden show called Gardenline hosted by Randy Lemmon. His website has a bunch of tip sheets, one being for lawns with a fertilization schedule in Houston area.

I’m the polar opposite. Don’t water, fertilize or aerate. The retired folks on the block hate me. My yard and house are kept neat, but I don’t care that my groundcover is an even mix of fescue, clover, dandelions and crabgrass.
