First Time Towing an RV

You should try to get it to lock and then back off from that, helps preserve the Tundy brakes. I’m using a P3 and it locks at 8.

 

You do have to have the trailer plugged into bumper, it is in the vehicle settings somewhere by the type of brakes setting.

 

I was connected at that time. I'll have to check it again. Wouldn't be the first time I missed something. Ha

 

When was the last time you were at the dealer? There was a update for the brake controller software.

 

I'm do for my 60K checkup. I'll ask them about the brake controller. Should be done this weekend.

 

Me. Again. LOL. When I put my transmission in manual while towing. In 5th gear. If feels and looks like torque converter locks and unlocks. 2-300 rpm split. Is this normal? My previous truck for last 12 years was a Cummins with a 6 speed manual. Last time I owned an automatic was 2005. LOL.

 

I have bags and the Hitch works fine for me

Yes it does, and IIRC it locks up 4-6 and if the trans temps get too hot it can lock up 1-3. Watched a cool video awhile ago about the trans, i will try and find it.

Looks great! We just sold our Popup to upgrade to a hard side. Looking at the Passport 239ML. Looks like the weights is about the same. Hopefully pick it up this week and do a trial run this weekend.

I was looking at the exact trailer. Unfortunately there wasn't a dealer very close to me. I really liked the setup and the colors.

What floorplan is that winnie? 17BH?

We recently bought a 2019 MicroMinnie 2106FBS with the off-road package and WE LOVE IT. Was planning on towing with a 2017 4x2 Tacoma. It would tow it but had to work hard at it and the MicroMinnie dry weight is only about 3750. Total weight with a WDH was a little over 4K. Would take almost a 1/2 tank of gas to go less than 90 miles and that was on mostly flat terrain.

After our 2nd trip with the Tacoma towing the Winnie I looked at the wife and said "I think we need a bigger truck if were planning on traveling anywhere outside of a 200 mile range from the house." She agreed. The next day I traded the Tacoma in on a 2018 Tundra XSP double cab.

The Tacoma was a great truck overall and I really liked driving it and the body style looks awesome. But it just couldn't handle towing that well, and Winnebago designed the Minnie Drop and the MicroMinnie series to be towed by mid-size trucks and SUV's.

So far I'm loving the Tundra XSP 4x4. It's a beast. It came with tubular step rails, a tri-fold bed cover, 20" rims with BF Goodrich All Terrain tires. Hitched up the Winnie last weekend and the Tundra felt like it wasn't towing anything.

 

I like that the bago is narrow. And you can see the sides with stock mirrors. Seems like trailer. Manufactures. Think for some reason that wider is better. Don’t know. Why. Dumb marketing departments I guess

 

Nice looking rig op! The factory controller seems to be doing it's job on mine as well. I test it every time I hook up and it always slows the truck down in a hurry.

Interesting...I'll be looking for that the next time I'm hooked up.

We bought an '18 2106FBS last fall and are loving it. The Tundra pulls it great with only the WDH (Equalizer E2). I replaced the wheels/tires and installed a leveling kit to the Tundra after we got the trailer. I had to readjust the hitch to get everything setting level. I was able to dial it all in to where the front wheel wells raise 1/2" with the trailer hooked up and both loaded for camping. We've been to CO from IN earlier this summer and just got back from a trip to the GSMNP in TN. Couldn't be happier with the way the Tundra and the Winnie have performed.

 

Have a similar story, but with the 2017 Honda Ridgeline Sport (haters gonna hate!). I totally loved the Ridgeline. I’d personally buy one over a Tacomoa any day. It even towed the 1700BH great around the state, but once we started pushing the distance and terrain more, we realized a bigger truck would be better for all around comfort and safety of the fam and rig.

 

Then I guess that makes me a hater. Seriously though, I'd be curious to see the numbers for a Ridgeline's towing capacity, etc.

For what it's worth, the numbers being posted here check out pretty well based on our experience. We just got back from towing a 4700 lb (dry) 30 ft travel trailer 2300 miles from San Diego to Central Oregon and back. We averaged about 9 mpg, maybe a tad less. Trailer brake control was a little tricky to get set up initially, but it worked great. I had the same experience with shifting and running at higher RPMs on the uphills: manual (sport?) mode didn't impress me much as it seemed to override my gear selection. I'll break out the owner's manual again to make sure it wasn't user error. Overall, great truck for towing.

 

The G2 Ridgeline AWD has a max tow rating of 5,000lbs and total payload cap at 1,580lbs. GCWR = 9,986lbs and GVWR = 6,019lbs. Before I was towing the Bago 3500+ miles, the Ridgeline was the perfect little pickup for me and my family. Keyless entry (touch sensitive), integrated sub woofer, remote start, tri-zone climate control all came standard on the Sport model. It's a very capable (and comfortable!) truck and perfect for anyone who rarely tows, or tows well under the max rating.

That said... now that I have the Tundra Platinum, I don't miss the Honda too much

Those are pretty impressive numbers. Now what's this "standard keyless entry" and "remote start" you speak of??? Any more of that talk and you'll get us both kicked out of here!

 

I'm still debating it, I have read both ways where some say it helps, some say the WDH and bags fight each other which makes it bounce back and forth down the road. I am totally up to suggestions, and still weighing all the options.

Not true... I have both on a leveled 3/1 truck and have never had an issue like that.

 

I couldn't wait till next summer to pull the camper with the new truck so we went out camping this weekend with some friends. It started out as fall camping and turned into winter camping. I will certainly be adding airbags to help even the truck out. I had them in my old truck (07 sierra) and they made a huge difference. I had to go an extra chain on the WDH and it was a little tight for my liking. Our trailer is a 2014 Jayco Whitehawk with a dry weight around 6500lbs and hitch weight of 630lbs. We had some pretty good side and headwinds to deal with so did a lot of driving in 4th gear and managed to run in 5th at times. I was always told to always tow a gear down from how many the transmission has (so no higher than 5th) to save the life of the transmission (by friends that own a transmission shop) even when pulling a small trailer with a sled or a quad on it. I'm looking forward to trying it again when the winds aren't so bad.

Now I just need to figure out which bags to get.

very nice. Do you know what kit they installed? i have the similar trailer (2019 Micro Minnie 1700BH) and cannot find a lift kit for it. Even a kit that etrailer swore was the right one wouldn't fit.

 

Good to hear a positive report on the brake controller. I'll be towing at near capacity in a few months and am hoping to not have to replace it.

Op, how are you liking your trailer a couple years in? The wife and I are thinking about buying a trailer in the next couple years. I'm looking for something in the 24-27 ft / 4500 lbs dry, 7500 GVW range with bunks.
