P2442 code

Was getting P2442 code I found using an OBD11 wifi module (20.00 on Amazon) with "torque" app on my android tablet. Symptom before finding the code was check engine light lit and flashing 4LO light, truck would got into "Limp mode" Very scary when this first happened, first couple of times this happened was able to reset computer by removing battery ground cable which cleared the problem. After using the OBD11 module the next time it happened was able to clear the code with the torque app, this happened a couple of times. was able to save the error P2442 code on the tablet. Took the tundra to Toyota as there is an extended warranty to fix this problem. While at the dealer they told me there was some kind of software upgrade recall to fix some other problem (can't recall what they said it was for) They would not fix the problem causing the P2442 code as they said they would have to see it on their own diagnostic machine but were not able to reproduce it. They suggested that the next time it happened I just leave it as is and have the truck towed to their service department. I live about 100 miles from the dealer. Any way, the problem has not reoccurred since then and its' been more that 2 weeks since then. I'm wondering if the software upgrade had something to do with this or if the problem is still going to reoccur. Anybody have any thoughts.

 

Oh boy, you've got some reading to do. Good news is, Toyota will pay for it all since you fit in the recall window assuming you have less than 150,000 miles. Read the attached.

You need to call Toyota HQ (not your local dealer) immediately and inform them.

 

Oh, and the 'software upgrade' changed the valve timing of the AIP system to prevent backflow into the AIP pumps but it won't stop the issue from ingressing water from the inlet side. Rest assured the issue will come back. You're probably only having intermittent issues right now but it will fail again.

 

Great, thanks for your reply, just got off the phone with Toyota customer service, (1-800-331-4331), talked to them for quite awhile but they still insisted that the dealer would have to verify the code themselves. They would not authorize the repairs under the extended warranty otherwise. This is a dangerous situation if the problem were to occur while on a busy interstate and the truck would go into limp mode. They did say that they would pay for the tow to the dealer if it could be proven that the problem was related to the P2442 code. I wish they would just do the repair with out having to go through the hassle of waiting for a reoccurence and towing the truck all that way, but they won't budge. Anyway thanks very much for you help, really appreciate it.

 

Where do you live? If you live near me you can borrow my code scanner. The trouble code has to repeat itself several times before it throws a check engine light and initiates limp mode. Chances are you may have the code back already but without becoming permanent and throwing a check engine light yet. O'Reilys or Autozone will scan you for free.

 

Also, regarding the limp mode, it's scary (happened to me when I was dealing with this) but not too dangerous unless you're towing uphill. Towing is a good idea especially if they pay for it but if you're close to the dealership you can 'limp' there without issues.

 

I live in Socorro NM, probably not close, but I just checked with my scanner and it does not show an error code at this time. Thanks for the offer, appreciate it..

 

Wow. That seems overly bureaucratic. Even though you have cleared the code, it should still show up in the history.

 

It's likely in the history but his particular code reader may not be able to access it (history).

 

Thanks for all your replies, When this happens again soon, I will probably have it towed to the dealer at their expense and let them worry about the cost of the tow since I am about 100 miles away I could not "limp" into the dealership on the Interstate too dangerous..
Have had this truck for almost nine years now, only 60,000 miles, never a problem, always loved this truck but this one and only problem gives me second thoughts about every buying another one. Just don't get why they won't go ahead and fix it while its' driveable to the dealership. Thanks again everyone.

 

Corporate probably dictates what they'll reimburse the dealers for and what they won't. In this case the code may need to be "active", meaning that the CEL must be illuminated. Just speculation though.

 

I had posted earlier that the P2442 code had not come back yet since I was at the dealer and they refused to do the AIP upgrade unless they could see the code. While there they performed this "Elsbos ecm software update" So far the P2442 code has not returned and have no problems, I did a little research on this software change and here is a little of what I found:

Description
In certain 2012 - 2014 Model Year Toyota Tundra and Sequoia vehicles equipped with a 5.7 Liter gasoline or 5.7 Liter-Flex Fuel engines, the Engine Control Module (ECM) may set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) if debris/ice becomes lodged in the air switching valve. If this occurs, the Malfunction Indicator (Check Engine) Light could illuminate and the vehicle could enter a “Fail-Safe” Mode (also known as “Limp-Home” Mode). If this occurs the vehicle’s power and speed will be reduced, which could inconvenience you and require immediate repair. Toyota has developed new Engine Control software logic to help prevent this condition from occurring.


Remedy
Authorized Toyota dealerships are requested to perform a software update at NO CHARGE to the vehicle’s owner. This LSC will be available until February 28, 2016, and will only be available at an authorized Toyota Dealer.


Although mine is a 2008 it seems they did it anyway, I guess I don't really care how they fixed the problem as long as it doesn't reoccur. Seems like an attempt to save a few dollars over having to replace the whole AIP system. Thats' fine I suppose as long as it stays fixed..

 

FYI, Tundras with the 4.6 that have California emissions have a 5 yr 60,000 mile warranty on all emission controls, 10,000 more than a truck with reg emissions. Just had the dealer replace the valves under full warranty.

 

have a tundra 4.7 v8 had the p2442 error code took it to dealership 2 years ago. dealer replaced the valves but billed me 800 bucks. problem was they did not open up the rt front wheel well where the problem imitates from. there are 2 air pumps and 2 snorkel tubes. its the snorkels that take air to the valve sets. they get water or road grime there and pump it to the valves. and that causes them to stick open. well since dealer didn't replace tubes. valve failed again. had a local mechanic replace valve. and then went to dealer to have them replace the equipment in rt wheel well. they billed me because i had a after market valve put in 2 years after theirs failed. well they never put the equipment in well as they said. and they gave me the old parts. iam no idiot they gave me brand new parts. took pictures of everything. and sent copies of receipts and sent them to ceo of toyota. did you know there is a regular consumer line and a corporate consumer line. so far they reimburse me for the $800.00 replacement. but there is another $900 i gave receipts for. strange thing is service manager of the dealership for last 3-4 weeks has been ducking the corporate consumer rep. huummmm. strange.
there is after market by pass. and since florida dosent do emissions as much as i hate air pollution. i going to get it. they only thing these valves redirect exhaust for a second burn in the engine. the by pass fools the computer and the engine. and no limp mode then. but problem wont go away if the starting point isnt fixed. and thats the front right wheel well intake. just saw a 2018 tundra. has the same set up. why dont the engineers move these intakes up into engine compartment away from road grime and water. instead they hide it behind a vented wheel well shield

 

The bypass system does not work with trucks that have the ECU flash.

If you are thinking of doing the bypass mod, find out if Toyota performed this recall service.

I think it was around 2014, all Tundras came with the modified ECU. The bypass does not work on any of those.

 

@Sdhq makes a secondary air intake to remedy this problem. Just sayin

 

If the truck spent all that time getting AIP service, im sure the dealer did the re flash on the ECU.

The bypass mod won't work.

 

It is not a bypass mod. It moves the plastic snorkels into the engine bay.

Its a 2011. I pulled receipts says nothing on ecu update. But since i had sensor valve replaced again by none toyota mechanic. N truck runs like a top. But this valve lets face it can fail at anytime. If iam 1000 miles from home iam in a hole then. The ecu was mentioned to me by the by pass part company too. But toyota talking to them makes me mad. Thats why i turned to you folks. I feel iam in among really enlightened people who know what iam up against. N i appreciate all of you n your advice

Would it be possible to reroute the snorkels to pull the air from the intake side of the air box and that way the air would be filtered and dry?

 

dont know but there are after market snorkel hoses with filter on ends that get mounted in engine area. so thats my next thing to do. but i did send a letter to ceo of toyota in plano tx. wow got refunded for the 1st repair that they messed up. and as of thurs am getting refunded for the same part that failed 1.5 years after they put it in that i had a non-toyota mechanic put in and for the snorkel that i paid outright for them to put in but. instead they billed me gave me the new part claiming it was the old one and they never opened up the front right wheel well amazing what pictures do. so the dealer lied. 8 years and 66000 miles you dont give a spotlessly clean part too me. and the grommets were pristine. so ill most likely get the rest of the money i put in for. and the warranty will still be intact for another 2 years or 100000 milles. but if it fails it their nickle again. and this time they will replace the whole assembly under the warrenty. because i know there is road grud in those hoses some where thats going to mess up that valve. and i have all my documents invoices and copies of the refund checks so far except for the last $800 plus dollars. executive customer service says sometime in the next 3 weeks. but i did get a coder to delete the limp mode code if it happens again. that way i can get it back to toyota if iam far away from home on business or vacation...

 

I think you need to leave the code displayed. If you clear it, the dealership will refuse to do the repairs.

The best thing is to "limp" it or have it towed to the dealer.
