2wd 4wd acceleration and 488 gears

Hoping others can shed some light here. I'll try to keep it as short as possible. I have a 14 CM 2wd which had 33" MT's on 20's when I bought it so I never really felt the stock power on it but my previous truck was an 07 CM 2wd SR5 with factory platinum 20's(wheel/tires) so I use that to compare. Immediately after buying my truck I upgraded wheels(Methos NV's). tires(295/70 Toyo A/T), full suspension, lift(3/1) and front/rear pads/rotors and though the ride is very impressive i feel it is overly sluggish off the line in day to day driving. My buddy has a 14 CM TRD 4wd and this weekend I drove it about 150 miles. His truck is leveled on stock 18's with 295/70's. I felt his truck was noticeably peppier off the line even though both trucks are on 295's. Are the 4wd always in 4hi or 2wd during normal driving? If always 4wd could that be the reason for the peppier take offs and normal driving? Has anyone else ever driven both 2/4wd and noticed the same results? I'm thinking 488 gears and a locker would produce noticeable differences. I got a price of $1100 for gears. What can I expect to pay for the locker and whats a reccomended brand to use?

 

Nobody experience anything like this?

 

It shouldn’t ever be in 4 wheel drive during basic on road driving. I can’t really explain why his feels peppier but a locker won’t help at all as you won’t ever use it on road either. It’s only going to be useful for serious off road situations

 

I just installed 295 70 18 Nitto Ridge grapplers and my truck feels sluggish but I was expecting it because it is much different overall all size to my old 285 65 18 I really didn't know if 488 gears were worth it for me or not since I never really tow

 

I have 4.88s and it was totally worth it, for me. Does it give more umpf? Not really, it just puts the truck back into the factory final drive ratios, or closer to it.
It does hold 6th and 5th gears a lot longer when we go to the mountains. I dont have to put more pressure on the skinny peddle when going up hills on the interstate.
I like the idea of my transmission not having to work so hard. It doesn't have to look for gears all of the time.

 

Yeah but see that's what I think is the difference between 2nd gen and 3rd gen is the computer or gearing because mine is never hunting between gears

 

I live in CO, running 35s and a Snugtop the weighs about 350lbs and another 100lbs of stuff in the bed.
Your truck still has the 4.30s that's across the board I THINK, for 2nd and 3rd gens. Maybe the ECM and PCMs are different? I dont know.
All I know is, how my truck was performing and what I needed to do to remedy it. I hope this doesn't sound snarky.

 

When are 4.88 gears required or needed?

 

Does it matter if only 2wd or only 4wd?

 

Some say with 35s
Some say with 37s
Some dont change them
I can tell you that every vehicle that I have had lifted and bigger tire put on, I always regeared. Thats just me.

 

295 70 18 are considered 34.5?

 

2wd trucks here that have done the 2wd re gearing to 4.88 years ?

 

There are 1 or 2 on here. I think @Jsena has 4.88s and 2wd. Not too sure though. Sorry Jena if I misspoke.

Yessir... 2wd here with 4.88’s... 37 tires on mine.. was very sluggish before I did the regear... moves a lot better now.. 5.29’s come out I’ll be getting those ASAP!!

Who is recommended for parts for 2wd?

 

\Nitro gears 1100, arb locker 950, install about 1500+ total about 3600-4000 $ total depending on install cost

 

I have a 2wd tundra 14 and it had 33s.
Lifted the truck 3 inches boss lift and put 35s.
Got sluggish so regeared to 4:88 installed auburn LSD and supercharger all at once.
It is fast now and burns tires like no tomorrow.
There is no difference in power between 2wd and 4wd cause its 4wd not AWD that its engagged all the time.
U dont need locker unless u are going rock climbing which i doubt u will do with 2wd.
I paid $1500 for 4:88 gears + auburn LSD + installation.
I did auburn lsd cause its snows here and LSD works.

 

Yeah I would only need the 4.88 gears it never snows here so what you think price would be

Try calling them in the morning. I imagine they can do something for you. Ask if they can get you a complete kit for the rear only. Worth a shot.

 

I paid $900 for nitro 488 gears and auburn lsd, $600 for installation.

But i waited and waited and waited and waited before i got the deal.

 

Damn all you fuckers lucked out. I just paid 1300 for front and rear plus install will be about 840 they say. Welcome to ny where they price gouge everything. And if I didn’t order from the shop labor rate would be another 40$ and hour so even if I waited for a deal I’d still get fucked lol

 

So you geared and don’t feel a difference?

 

2wd Gears ans bearings maybe $700-800 and install is about $500. Good luck

 

I think what he’s saying is the difference is the fact that you return back to stock feel of power with gears and bigger tires as oppose to not hearing and getting a power loss due to heavier wheels.

The set up I’m gonna run is about 25lbs heavier over stock per wheel and tire which from I read on the forum equals to carrying around 600lbs of weight in the bed constantly

Something about 1lbs of rotational mass equals 6lbs of static mass...idk I’m no physicist just Parroting what I’ve read on the forum the way I understand it
