So, while out on business last week I parked my TRD PRO at the airport, and this being the unpredictable and seemingly spontaneous (when it comes to weather) town of Kansas City, I returned to find my truck to be pocked with hail damage. I will have someone out tomorrow to give me a quote and USAA will give me a list of providers they use for this kind of thing, but they did tell me I could use the Toyota dealership if I wanted.

Should I trust this to a Toyota Dealer, or a standard collision shop?

I have a friend who had the same thing happen to her 2014 Tundra last year. She went with the dealer. Took about a month. $4000 damage. Turned out looking real good.

I'd probably stick with a Toyota dealer. Any parts that need replaced are more likely to be OEM if you do. If no parts need replaced then it's a toss up.

I would shop around and find reviews of the shops/dealerships you have in mind. I've had problems with my local dealership with attention to detail more than once and I've been to a very unprofessional Toyota dealership that didn't get any of my business.

If you are considering someone other than your dealer, don't go by "reviews". Online "repair" reviews are good for toaster and vacuum cleaners at best. Go by word of mouth, friend/co-worker/neighbor recommendations from actual experiences. I've had problems from dealers and 3rd parties over the years. Apple and oranges. Most Toyota dealers are very good. For example: Kendall Toyota in Eugene is one of the best in Oregon. One of the first Toyota dealers in Oregon. (mid 60's). Still in business after all these years. Probably because Kendall doesn't suck. @Oper8r .... Go to your local dealer and explain that you prefer to use them, because you expect the best outcome. Ask them why you shouldn't use a third party. Put the ball in their court. What are the advantages of using them?? Don't mince any words. If you don't like what you hear, then ask around. Hint...The busiest repair shop in your town/area that makes you wait a couple of weeks is probably a good start. Don't go to the 3rd party shop with 2 fat guys standing around eating McD food because they have nothing else to do and promise to make your Tundra a priority . Just sayin........... (By the way, what does your insurance co recommend???)

Dealer working on your 2016 or " My best guy (?) is on it right now as we are speaking":

This happened to our Armada a while back, and we went with a trusted Auto Body shop. The insurance company insisted on OEM parts and all was good with the world. I don't know of anything a Toyota dealership knows how to do (body-wise) better than does a good body shop. Quite the opposite, actually.

Key terms in this missive are "trusted" and "good".

Agreed. I figured since the Tundra is fairly new, the insurance company would probably prefer the dealer. No doubt there are a lot of decent reputable body shops. You just need to know which one. There are a lot of decent body shops here in the Denver Metro area. There are places I'm sure where it may be hard to find a decent body shop nearby and the dealer would be the best bet. Maybe.

I think I would prefer a reputable body shop, as that is what they do day in day out, they will use oem parts if you specify what you want. If not move on! Good Luck with it.

Honestly, what you are looking for is a dent doctor or paintless repair guy. The best ones are so good you'll never see their work. They travel around following storm damages and do repairs for car lots, or manufacturer lots. We have guys at the plant that can do some stuff but when we had a hail storm come through at work, they had outside contractors fix around 5k cars. Find out who the dealers use locally to fix their hail damaged cars on the their new lots. You can still sale a new car as a new car even if it was damaged by a hail storm, if repaired properly.

Thanks everyone for the input. I think at this time I will be going with "The Other Guy". The inspection is done and it looks like there should be no grinding or painting. My biggest fear was matching the paint if any panels needed replaced or painted, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

USAA didn't really recommend any particular shop to me, they just have a list of providers that have done good work for them before. They told me I could go with whoever I wanted, the list just makes life easier for their customers. Should be painless, hoping for a 7-10 day turn around once I get it in the shop.

I'm thinking I would stay away from the fly by night gypsies . I spent a few months in Florida before I came out here to Denver. 2004. Hurricane Charlie, Francis, Ivan, and Jeanne. The roof repairers would travel around from storm to storm and take your deposit and disappear. What kind of warranty do you get when your dent doctor left the state to go to the next storm?? You get what you pay for. Just sayin.............

Good luck with whomever you decide to go with. My last car I was in a wreck and I went with who my insurance provider recommended that specialize in body and suspension, because of the ease of communication with them. Every time they called to tell me my car was complete (multiple times), I found that it wasn't and they had to keep trying to diagnose problems to fix. I told them what was most likely wrong with it and they would think it was something else, replace and I would reject. I ended up calling my insurance lady (progressive at the time) and told her the story. Took my vehicle to a reputable shop that I know their work and had them fix the car it right their first time. I'd still get reviews of people from prior experience and are familiar in that field.

I'll let everyone know who I go with and how it turns out. I'm also going to do research on the top three shops USAA gives me before making my decision.

Won't be doing any pics unless there is a goof up at the shop. The dents are all shallow enough, any pics would be boring.

I see a few people here have USAA. I'm not bashing on them and people like certain insurance companies. I got a quote from USAA a few years ago and my payments would've only dropped $5 per month when I had Progressive. On my last car I was paying $280 monthly with Progressive, switched to American National and it dropped to $220 monthly with the same full coverage, rental, and tow. I'm all about saving a buck when I can. So go ahead and look them up if interested.

Most of my co-workers are ex military and swear by USAA. I keep telling them to shop around to make sure they are getting the best bang for the buck.

Agree about getting the best bang for the buck. A nice thing about my current insurance provider vs a larger like USAA or Progressive is when I was pulled over for not having fender flares or wide enough mud flaps, I didn't have a copy of my updated insurance card. I called my insurance provider while the cop was writing a ticket and she text me a picture of my insurance information, I got out of that ticket. I still got one for not carrying my proof of registration though.

LEO's here in CO do not seem to be too concerned about the lack of fender flares. @Sean266 (Sean) may have some insight on this. He will no doubt lecture you on not having the required paperwork. There is always a negative side.heh heh

I've never seen LEO's concerned about it unless its pretty ridiculous. When he told me his reason I asked "are you fu@king kidding me", he then proceeded to explain the requirements. I had a copy of my registration on my phone that I forgot about, just not sure where I placed the hard copy. Negative side about not having the correct paperwork was on the ticket for $180. I then bought fender flares, painted and plasti dipped them, put them on and found out that with these flares, the mud flaps can't be installed. I figured I would get pulled over more for not having mud flaps vs fender flares, plus I wasn't a fan of the flares.

Oregon still has no sales tax, (I think) they (the state/counties) needs all the money they can get their hands on.

Yes, no sales tax and high state tax in OR. This last summer I was visiting San Francisco, on our restaurant bill's we were also charged I think 5% city tax as well as sales tax.
