2018 CrewMax AC quit on a 101 degree day....

So on Monday I gave this Texas sun and heat the middle finger and had all my windows and windshield tinted with 3M Crystalline tint. Love the tint BTW. So as I was pulling out of the tint shop i noticed my air out of vents was getting warm. AC was set to LO, recirculate, fan on high. Yes AC light was green. This setting will usually give me 38 degrees air. It was 80 and climbing.

I pulled over and shut the truck down and restarted. Same thing. Shut the ac system down. Same thing. Got back on the road an highway and hoped it would come back on. Nope. Air out of vents 100deg. Bad thing is I had fresh tint so I couldn't roll the windows down. By the time I pulled into the dealership 30 MILES LATER my thermometer in the vent was reading 110 degrees. I was soaking wet and lets just say a bit upset.

Murphy's law of course. As I pulled into the service area and put it into park the compressor kicked back on and the air was getting cold. By the time I flagged someone down and got back to the truck I had left running the air was at 45 degrees and still dropping. WTF.

They kept it 2 days, burned 1/4 tank of fuel test driving it. Didn't happen again. Said no codes or anything. Tint shop says they didn't mess with anything. I'm at a loss. If this happened once it will happen again, probably on another 101 degree day. I wouldn't think so, but is there something the tint shop could have done, got soap on a new sensor or whatever to cause this??

On edit truck is a 2018 CrewMax. 2,500 miles.

 

If it happens again select the defroster position and see if it wakes it up.

 

I tried that. I was trying everything in that sauna. Did nothing.

 

Dude that sucks and of course on tint day. I sure hope it never happens again. All I can think would be to disconnect battery and see if that helps.

 

Keep reporting it and they will fix it under warranty. I had an issue with my brakes and they replaced everything and gave me a rental car. They’ll make it right if it does it again

Negative. Never use auto mode.

 

My guess was a loose electrical connection somewhere, or a intermittent issue with a high or low pressure switch in the ac system.

 

Not that this helps much, but next time, if it does happen again, try getting some phone video of it and with you adjusting it. It may not help them diagnose it but they may decide to keep the truck longer and do some more troubleshooting if they see you are actually having issues.

 

that sucks, too bad it couldn't have happened yesterday. If you are in DFW we had a cold front and it was only 93.

 

Just a theory, but I'll bet the window tint guys got something wet when they did the windshield. Being that hot in the cab, it dried out between the time you left and the dealership. I've had similar issues when tinting windshields, but never could pinpoint it. In all cases, the customer vehicles returned to normal within a day.

 

That could very well be since I had 0 issues prior, had the issue as I was leaving their shop, had the issue for about an hour and a half, drove it a few times since then and no issue.

Crazy that vehicles have become so complicated that we cant even put clear ceramic tint on a windshield without causing an issue.

 

The issue is really the amount of water required to flush all of the dirt and debris off of the windshield, and the water required again to apply the tint. I've used 32 ounces of water to do a Silverado windshield in the past. So, I really bet that something that has to do with the A/C on the cab side of the firewall got wet.
