New member here, already gathered plenty of great information on this site, but thought I'd join and seek additional advice for my next purchase.

Current owner of a 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport White. I have a 2 year old son with another boy on the way, so I'm seeking a Tundra CrewMax for the larger backseat.

I've been shopping used vehicles at local dealerships, CarMax and Carvana.

I'm struggling to make a decision on which package to purchase. Please let me know your thoughts on these various options to help me make this decision. Thanks!

-TRD Off-Road (very similar to my current Tacoma, but I guess since I'm expecting an upgrade, this option doesn't wow me enough, which is probably stupid)

-Limited (feels overpriced for leather seats and sunroof, I'm not a huge fan of the exterior upgrades)

-1794 (I'm finding a lot of 2014-2016's for sale at a surprisingly reasonable price, really like the exterior look, undecided on the interior color of the seats)

-TRD Pro (I've come across 1-2 of these on CarMax for $40-42k, also found one on Carvana for the same price in Cement grey, I'm borderline obsessed with the look of these vehicles, but don't do much off-roading so unsure if they're worth the price)

Sorry for the long post, any guidance would be very helpful. Thanks!

Welcome. Limited should also include heated seats and upgraded stereo (although it still sucks)

Welcome from SoCal. With your son an another on the way (congratulations). I would suggest whatever option fits your needs, such as easier clean up.

thanks! I may be overlooking the leather seats for clean up purposes.

The TRD Pro comes with leather, so that's still the leader in the clubhouse.

    Has anyone dealt with Carvana?

If you don't do much off-roading the PRO is a waste, unless you are willing to spend the extra for looks. You can buy a new lesser model for the same price as a used PRO.

The TRD Off-Road, even though you mentioned that you are looking for an upgrade from your current, is probably going to feel like an upgrade so I would recommend that.

I did not like the Limited seats for some reason, and I don't care for sunroof or upgraded sound system, which still sucks as much as the base or mid range, so in my opinion the Limited is not worth the extra cost. That is just my opinion though based on my preferences.
1794 interior is awesome, if the color was different. I don't like that orange leather.
I paid extra for the TRD Sport because I wanted the color matched bumpers and grille. If you are looking for a used truck, the Sport will not be an option yet.

Good luck in the search, and welcome to the site.

I went 05 taco to SR5 CREWMAX TUNDRA. I don't like leather, I knew I was going to change a lot of things... So I just went SR5 and I love the hell out of it. You will be happy with any of them. It's just about what's important to you and how much that payment will be

I have two children and used to have a 2010 tacoma dc trd off road. The only thing I miss about that truck was the color. Pyrite mica was awesome.

Own a white (fastest) CM TRD Pro for a year now and love it. However I happened on a hell of a deal for it, and don't know that it's worth the premium most dealers were charging over the other models.

Were I to have the option between a 1794 and a Pro at a similar price point, I'd go 1794 and maybe do a small lift down the road. Much easier to swap coilovers than dual zone climate control, plush leather and power passenger seat.

Just my two cents. Can't go wrong with any Tundra you get.

I went with the 2017 SR5 and added leather from the dealer. (i've got 3 little ones and wanted leather for the quicker cleanup - it's been very nice not having to clean shit out of fabric)
I've since added the Pro Grille.
Whatever you do, get the 5.7l with Tow package.. this thing is a BEAST!

They put out way more SR5's than any other model. With that, they are usually willing to deal a bit more on price, so that would be a good option if price is a concern...
You can always make it functionally equivelent to a pro.. buying all the OEM parts...
I also dont plan on going off roading much. I may do shocks for the level later, but still undecided.
I put on the pro grille. Am going to powder coat the bumper corners black. Rear sway bar is in the mail. And i did Spyder headlights in the front and Winjets in the rear.
I'm personally happy that I didnt get the Pro.. would have spent a lot more for the PRO vin and stamped bed sides just to swap out alot of the components (lights, soon to be exhaust, and maybe eventually suspension).

Not to sure about the TRD OffRoad... I didnt even really consider them.

That's the route I went. Different strokes for different folks.

    Edit: Welcome from TX!

I just added a 18 crewmax sr5 TRD offroad crewmax. I still daily drive my 2015 DCSB taco trd sport. The gas mileage difference isn't that noticeable. The space inside, towing capacity, and power is huge. I don't like leather and I always put on seat covers anyways. The sr5 with the upgrade package is a damn nice truck. For me it hits a sweet spot that other mfgs miss. If you are big into mods then I might consider the pro in your case. A second little one soaks up time and $$$ that doesn't always let the mods happen. Either way I think you are headed in the right direction.

I've got 3 little ones (youngest is 6mo) ... it does take a little time between me getting the part and putting the part on, but I can usually get it accomplished inside of a week or two... but I had the truck over a year before I really started moding it.

So the interior of the Limited is different than the interior of the 1794? Other than the color, of course.

I bought a Limited, but if I could do it over again I'd probably buy an SR5 with the bench seat and just add Katzkins or other leather. The leather on the Limiteds isn't too great, and the only other real benefit is dual climate control and an "upgraded" stereo.

Yes, the leather style is different. Different type stitching and there is a mixture of some suede in the 1794 seats also. 1794 is a "knockoff" of the King Ranch F250s - kind of a horse saddle type look to the leather parts as compared to the Limited which is smooth black leather. I just don't like the color of the 1794. It is a light brown, almost orange looking color. I wish it was like the Ford King Ranch darker brown color.
1794 also has more wood inserts, and wood steering wheel accents.

Edit: Limited comes in other colors also, not just black. I think there is gray and tan.
1794 is only in the light brown.

I've got dual climate control in my SR5.... I just close the vents on my wifes side and it's not as cold for her over there LOL

It's all personal preference, just figure out the "big wants" and buy the truck around that.

I came across a 2017 TRD Pro with 29k miles and a clean vehicle report for $41,000.

Wanted to see if y'all thought that was a good deal.

Otherwise I've been seeing TRD Off-Road's for $36-39K depending on mileage and year.

Just bought a RAV4 for the daughter. Looked at Carvana but their list prices were a fair amount above market. I think you pay a premium for there service. They seemed to have a fair amount of the Nissan Rogue inventory tied up. I believe they focus on the popular vehicles. Rogue is #1 selling SUV. If I did not take a vehicle off road there is no way I would pay the premium for a Pro. The interior is nice but you can either do Clazzios (which I did) or Katskins if you do not get a limited. Pro will bring higher resale but if you plan to keep for a while it will be a long time before you see benefit. I skipped the Pro when the dealer would not budge off MSRP. A Pro was going to cost me close to $10k more. Not worth it.
