Access cab window latch repair

I just repaired the broken hatch hinge pieces on my 2003 Tundra, and figured I'd document the process for anyone else looking for info. It's pretty damn simple, but in the spirit of being helpful, here you go:

I bought the replacement parts from a random person on ebay: Rear Quarter Window Latch Hinge Pivot

As az chip mentioned, not only is the pin the Ebay seller provided the wrong diameter, it is also the wrong length, plus you need two pins and he only sends one!

The good news is there is no reason not to reuse the existing pins, and at least in my case, I didn't need to drill out the new hinge pieces to accommodate the old pins as some people have indicated.

EDIT!!! charlie_tuna1978 chimed in and pointed out that the "new" pin the Ebay seller supplied is probably not intended as a replacement hinge pin, but rather as a tool to push the existing pins out. This make so much sense and seems so obvious in hind sight that I feel pretty dumb. I guess in my defense I was going off somebody else's post mentioning that the pin in their new kit were the wrong size, so I didn't think any more critically about the issue. Ooops.

I used a nail to push the pins out of the broken latch parts. I had to tap one side gently with a hammer-like-object (channel lock pliers, since I was too lazy to dig out a hammer) and the other side I was able to push out by hand. (I removed the latch from the window to make it a little easier.)

I then used the channel locks to gently squeeze it all back together. (I put some padding between the pliers's teeth and the plastic on the bottom, just left it out for clarity in the photo.)

All fixed!

Just did mine, I'm pretty sure the pin that is included is to press out the pins already in place. One thing I did notice is that the window now seems to not close as well?? does anyone else notice this?

As for not closing as well, I didn't have any issue. Mine closed as well and latched more securely with the fix. Are all the other things aligned well, i.e., perpendicular to the window edge and stuff? In my first photo above the part that attaches to the glass was loose when I started working on it.

Since you were smart enough to figure out the pin's purpose, I'm guessing this isn't the issue. Not sure what else it could be though.

If the new parts fit then the only problem it seems the only possible issue they could cause is being very slightly longer, which would make it harder / impossible to close the latch. But if they were too much longer they probably wouldn't actually fit in the first place.

If the new parts indeed fit, then...were your old (broken?) hinges allowing the window to close off-kilter, thereby making the weatherseal deform or something?

I guess when you say the window doesn't close as well, I need more info about what that means (and you need somebody who knows what they are talking about more than me).

 

Possible part was put on backward?
Swap to other side.

 

I should have coffee before I troubleshoot. Yeah, this seems a more-likely culprit. I made sure to match the curve of the existing pieces. Not sure you'd need to swap sides, though, just flip it over. The inside of the curve should face the front of the truck (see pics above).

But I've only had one sip of coffee so far...

 

I think it's ok, it just seems when it reaches fully closed position the window moves back just a bit. (open) I can see the rubber seal move, but it may have been that way before I just never noticed it? Good advice on adjusting it, need to try that. Thanks, Chuck.

The ebay ad I bought from the ad said pin(s) included. I'll go back and post it. The instructions said pins plural as well.

 

The latches on my AC rear windows will not stay locked in the open position. Im constantly having to reach back and reopen them after entering or exiting the vehicle. Is this a typicak "tundra" trait or something i can fix?

 

Are the hinges broken? If not they could be worn.

 

Nope. Not broken, just loose. They could be worn i suppose its a replace and test part.

 

Mine have been broken for years and have not done the repair job that many on here have done. I can still latch the windows tight in the open position, but when doing so it requires a conscious effort to make the cam ‘grab’ when locking on the last part of the open pivot. Its easy if you mess with it an are not expecting the convenience of a perfectly operating cam. Try it. If it doesn’t work then by those repair cams.

I struggled getting the pin to go through one side of the new latch. Seems like the hole wasn’t large enough, but I bought the silver one instead of black several years ago and only put in recently.

 

Are the aluminum ones still available? I have had mine in for 10+ years.

 

I think the new ones are aluminum with a coating on top to make it black.

 

What theyre faster than mine?!?!?!
