What octane gas do you use for your Tundra?

This thread is becoming hilarious. Why is it that guys that have no first hand experience on what the truck does when running premium always have something to say to protect their group think mentality?! You have a respected Tundra tuner that say otherwise and yet you are still unconvinced. Have you pulled your own logs? There's also other variables like quality of gas in different regions. My 93 might equal your 87 due to the crappy ethanol that is added onto fuel. This is speculation on my part, but we can all agree that these two fuels aren't 100% the same.

Ehh, your whole post was off-topic but bobtheoilguy forum has far more credibility than this forum honestly. Heck, Subaru forums have a lot more knowledge than this place does. So, let's not go there. All your have to do is lurk in there and you'll find out that those guys are totally geeks about their oil.

Either way, I've bought some M1 after seeing some lab results but am still going to go with Pennzoil Ultra after a test run.

filled up tank today non-ethanol 90 octane 3.76 a gallon =82.31, mileage on 87 octane 15.6, in town and hills

 

Let us know if it climbs on this tank.

Filled up with 92 Octane 2 weeks ago. Still have 1/4 tank left to finish off. Been running 87 octane for 16 years since owning the vehicle. Most notable improvement is a MUCH quieter engine. It took about 1/2 tank before the quietness kicked in.

 

Did the engine also feel more responsive? My exhaust also sounds a tad louder. Not much, but I can hear it.

Just quieter. Exhaust note same. More responsive, eh. Mpg looking about the same.
Final conclusion: Its cheaper to buy a high end gas additive and split the bottle into two seperate tank fulls than buy the 92 octane.
I’ll ask this question again for the octane freaks. Has anyone bought and used the pure octane jugs?

About the Same driving between each refill (style, speeds, traffic conditions..?)

 

I live in Aurora and work in Denver. For my commute, I hit the freeway after a mile and a half of in town driving, set cruise at 57, and get in the far left lane for 17 miles (just kidding about the last part), then another mile of in city driving, and I am at work! I will even hit the accelerator a couple times on the way

 

Just curious, those are all the miles on those tanks?

 

This is why I use 91. In reality, I don’t pick 91, I pick ethanol-free gas. In MO, only “premium” (91 or 93 usually) can be eth-free, so that’s what I use. I don’t use ethanol gas because I don’t agree in subsidizing corn and I don’t think ethanol is good for you engine in general.

 

No, if I take surface streets instead of the freeway, which I often do to avoid traffic jams, my mpg rating drops down to 15 to 18, but my overall commute drops from 20 to 13 miles if I do that. I also always try to use Shell gas, and I get somewhat worse mpgs if I use Murphys or something like that. Not sure why.

 

So after reading and commenting here myself I decided since my first couple of tanks were run on 87 I would do two tanks of 91. My Truck is now at 2357 miles and after running two tanks on 91 (this could be because mine is flexfuel and programmed differently maybe) I really didn't notice a difference. Shifting felt the same FE numbers were only really maybe .1 of a difference and no difference in power feeling. This is my personal findings on it and I just went back to 87 tonight. If I notice anything going back to 87 I will let you all know.

EDIT: All Fuel ups were done at the Top Tier Quick Trip station.

I posted in a towing thread. But I'll post here as well. Ran 89 when towing. Noticed far less shifting. I envision the ECM realizing that it doesn't have to mitigate knock at low RPM with higher octane fuel.

Has this been confirmed by a tuner?

 

90 Non-ethanol

 

DAP tuning has on their FAQ page that it pulls timing. Since other trucks (Lexus)with our same engine require 91 or higher I believe them. For me the truck feels different. Even the exhaust note is louder.
