06 double cab build

Here’s my 2006 double cab I slid on ice into some trees last winter right after rebuilding the front end. So I decided to do a sas conversation and and a few more mods as I rebuilt it.

 

Fuckin A! An SAS’ed first gen will be a first for this site I bet.

 

Damn, that sucks! I couldn’t imagine those super swampers being the best in snow and ice.

What front axle did you going with? There are a few sas’d 1st gens over on tundra solutions if you need more info.

 

Casper421, yeah there not the best on ice. The axle is a high pinion Dana 44 from a 1979 bronco

 

10 inches of travel up front

 

Rear hangers are off a 2018 Ford f550 flipped upside down and bolted to the top and sides of the frame.

I cut out the front of camper shell so I have easy access with the back window down and added some roof crossbars for the kayak with paddle storage inside.

 

Did you keep the stock 8.4” in the rear?

 

Yeah I it’s still an 8.4 I couldn’t see any reason to change it there pretty beefy. I did put a set of 4.10 gears out of a sequoia in it. Currently the carrier is open in the rear with a locker front so it keeps good street manners until I get an arb for the rear.

 

So you’re running 5 lug up front and 6 lug in the rear?

I love this build! I have plenty of questions. What did you go with for the steering setup?

 

Thanks, Yeah it’s currently 5 lug front and 6 lug rear. Haven’t made up my mind if I want to run 6 lug hubs or convert to 8 lug and run military bead locks. The steering box is t100 and the tie rod is bronco everything else is custom. I build limousines for a living so I’ve got access to almost any tool I need for making parts.

 

Interested in this build. I've thought about SAS my Tundra after I get done with my 4Runner's SAS. I'm curious as to why you chose to mount the shackles in front. How does it ride with the spring collapsing forward? I know my old Jeep YJ had this setup and it rode like a pogo stick.
I'm always on the lookout for some F-250/350 axles from the 90s.

That’s awesome! It’s crossed my mind to sas mine but I think LT would suit my wheeling needs more. I could bolt on a LT kit with minimal welding, I wouldn’t trust myself to fab up a project like yours! Good on you!

 

I put the shackles in the front because of the frame shape I can have a level spring with a long shackle and still have a low ride height. With the 63 inch springs and long shackles it rides better than it did stock. If you do this weigh your truck on a 4 corner scale so you can pick the right spring rate, that makes the biggest difference in ride quality.

 

Started installing a spare tire carrier from a Nissan Pathfinder I modified. I built mounts out of 1/4” plate that bolt to the the bed floor and camper shell on the inside so it’s plenty strong.

 

So I put on a dual steering stabilizer kit and made a panhard bar out of some 1/4” wall pipe and 3/4” heim joints. It feels more stable now going over rough country roads but I still have a little bump steer to work out.

 

Replaced all my carpet, dash, door panels, and most of the small plastic parts on the inside. I also mounted a sequoia front console between my rear buckets, just need to get some matching leather for the rear door panel inserts and it’ll be done.

 

That is a badass first gen. My brother. Tip my hat to you sir!!!!

Got some 285/75/16 falken wildpeak at3’s to replace the super swampers. Now I can start doing a few more road trips.

 

I found these photos the other day. I built a radius arm suspension that used the factory coil overs before I decided to go with leaf springs.

 

Installed a master cylinder and booster from a 1979 f350 4x4. Had to modify the brake pedal mount and drill new holes in the firewall.

 

Since I had the brake lines off I added a willwood proportioning valve so I can adjust brake bias from in the cab.
