5.7 V8 Overheating?

Is there any truth to this?

Email from my brother who owns a Sequoia:

"Called Toyota service advisor said not to let your truck idle too long, it could over heat like mine did on the way back from Rocky Point. I guess its common with the bigger engines he said."

This is the first ive heard of our 5.7L engines. Any experience the same?

No the problem wasn't mine. My brother had his sequoia serviced at toyota just last year and had them flush his coolant. Sounds like they are feeding him BS.

 

Sounds like he has a leak or the thermostat is stuck.

 

If it were to overheat at idle only, or at low speeds only, it would be in indication of a failed viscous fan hub.

 

"No leaks Toyota did a radiator flush and changed the tubing to the radiator last year and I paid like $400 bucks for that last year when they did the breaks….for that exact reason I had them do it so it wouldn’t overheat."

 

Mine is my work truck and I idle it for extended periods without issue.

 

The other day at work, it was 90 degrees out, and we were using a company Ford Explorer (2015) to keep cool when we could get out of the sun. The truck idled for 2 hours before the engine began making a horrible grinding noise and white smoke began pouring out form under the hood. I guess that's why they call them Exploders.

 

well, its a bit hotter than 90 here in AZ. Its consistently over 105 every day.

 

I know, I was just bringing that story up for the sake of having a laugh at Ford.

 

I'm calling BS as well. I regularly idle my '07 at lunch in 105 degree heat and my temp gauge never goes past half. The cooling system on the 5.7L is very well setup. I'd check your coolant level. Other possibility could be a faulty fan clutch.

 

Could be a number of things really. Overheating can also be caused by fluid not getting around the engine and thru the system efficiently. This can be from a problematic thermostat, a bad water pump, an obstruction or air trapped in the system. Having been over a year though I kind of doubt it's the air option though (unless there's a leak and the fluid level is really low now).

 

New hoses and flush on a 2017? I have Led bars covering 2/3's of opening on mine. 104 today and temp gauge sat in same place it always does.

Sounds like dealership up-selling. They put fear into the customer to sell 'em unnecessary service. It's a lot easier to put fear in than to remove it from peoples minds.
