Tundra Noise

Hey all,
I've got a 2013 Tundra Crew Max Limited, about 97,000 miles. I installed a TRD air filter recently, and now I've got a sound that sounds like air being forced through the filter prior to revving the engine in park and when accelerating in drive. Any ideas what this could be? I'll upload a sound file so you guys can hear the noise. Ignore the initial "pop", as that's the sound of me putting my phone down for recording. Thanks!

Are you getting rough idling or throwing any codes? Does it go away when you put the stock filter back on?

 

Normal idling, not throwing any codes. Unfortunately, I don't have the stock filter anymore to test for the noise. I took it to a Toyota Dealership and a mechanic that specializes in Toyotas, and they both said that they thought it was just the filter getting worn-in. Not sure how convinced I am as I've owned many Yotas and have never had this happen when replacing or upgrading the air filters on the 5.7. Going to try to take it back in after making an appointment, as I was a walk-in at the dealership that seemed more than eager to dismiss the sound and get on with their other servicing jobs.

 

It definitely sounds like some sort of intake "cough". I would pop the filter box open, take the filter out and inspect it for tears/holes, then reinstall it making sure it's seated properly and latch the box back up. Fire up the truck again and see if it's still doing it. If it is, open the box again, take the filter out and start the engine w/o it in there and see if the sound is still there. It could be further down the intake if so.

Lo and behold,
After removing the air filter and running the truck again: the noise persisted. However, it sounded even louder. Hoping to go in for that appointment at my Toyota dealer to get it diagnosed. Not sure what it is, but does sound like a "cough" from the intake of some sort. Let's hope it's simple and cheap. Any other input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Because you're not throwing any codes I'm guessing it may just be a dirty ICV (IAC) and/or throttle body. If it were my vehicle I'd take off each section of intake tube one by one and inspect them for tears/cracks just to be sure you don't have any vacuum leaks past the MAF sensor. Start by disconnecting the air box from the MAF sensor (don't physically touch the MAF sensor itself BTW, the housing is fine to handle tho) and work my way down to the throttle body and ICV. I'd probably clean the MAF sensor with some CRC Electronic cleaner or MAF cleaner (spray in the same direction that the air flows) while I'm at it. I haven't been under the hood of a Tundra in any detail yet, but I'm assuming Toyota's put the ICV and throttle body close to one another. I'm sure someone here can verify where it's located. It could be something as simple as a dirty part that needs a some love from a can of carb or intake cleaner. If you get that far DO NOT TOUCH THE THROTTLE BODY FLAPPER!
