Roaring noise in my '05

Over the past few months my '05 Tundra had developed a roaring noise that usually starts above 40 mph. From 50 to 60 mph it's really noticeable. I initially thought it may be a wheel bearing but if I let off the gas pedal it stops. It's comes back as soon as I hit the gas again. It doesn't make the noise if i put it in neutral while doing 50 and rev the engine. I just replaced my center drive shaft carrier bearing but that wasn't it. Now I can feel the vibration in the gas pedal while driving the vibration has become noticeable while accelerating but the noise seems to appear above 40 mph. I have recently noticed a slight vibration while sitting at stoplights with my foot on the brake. If it put it in neutral it quits. It all seems to be related to the same issue, I just cant figure out what it is. I'm hoping it's not a transmission issue but it still shifts perfectly. It also seems to be a little resistance in the truck while driving; almost like something is holding it back but it's barely noticeable. I am pulling the wheels off tomorrow to replace the warped rotors and going to check the front end components. Anyone have any ideas? The truck is an '05 4X4 Crew Cab with 270k miles on it. Hi, not sure where you live, but my 2004 roars when the cooling fan fully engages (mine is mechanical) when running in hot weather or climbing a long hill in the summer out here in CO. It is very noticeable and has done this since new, especially when I was in FL and GA. I am not saying yours is doing this, but the first time I heard it years ago it was very noticeable and loud while accelerating

 

Do you get the same noise when parked and rev the engine to higher RPM?

 

No. Only while moving. It quits if I put it in neutral and rev while going 50 mph too. Only makes the noise when in gear with foot on the gas.

 

Have you checked U Joint and drive shaft?

 

Yes, Just removed it last week and put a new center support bearing in. It seemed to be fine. Greased it up and reinstalled. Center bearing was bad and making a popping noise at low speed. That's fixed but still getting the noise at higher speeds.

 

The way you described it, sounds to me, like a ring and pinion going bad.

 

Do you have a general idea of where the noise is coming from? Front, center, rear?

 

Really hard to tell but seems like the front.

 

I had the same type of noise happing. Mine was the rear ring and pinion going bad. Check to see if there is any play in the drive shaft. You might have two issues going on though. The roaring noise, lack of power, and vibration while at a standstill might not be related. After all you do have 270k on it.

 

Wheel bearing.....and you have the easy one. I'm going through this as we speak. First you want to make sure it's not the tires making the noise......they can make it sound like a wheel bearing is going bad. Well I just bought 4 new tires, and now I am defiantly confirmed it's my left front bearing, and there IS a slight amount of play. The thing is, I'm the one that screwed it up, yep I said that. I did replace it, but the big hub nut would not go all the way on, 2 more threads. It lasted about 1,000 miles, now it's defiantly bad. This time I'm looking for the whole steering knuckle in a junk yard and take my chances, and rebuild mine on the side with a new hub and ring nut. I'm talking about the 2 wheel drive set up....it's a bitch compared to the 4x4's. Your hub is the easy one, 4 bolts for the whole assembly, no pressing out bearings. Toyotas have issues with bearings, nothing new. Buy Timken bearings if you can.

 

It's definitely not the tires. The have less than 1000 miles on them. I just replaced the brake rotors and pads yesterday and didn't have any play in the wheels that I could detect and everything up front seemed to be tight. I may have to take it in to get diagnosed. I hope it's as simple as a bearing!

 

Exactly....mine had no play in the beginning when it started making noise, even though the big nut on the back looked like it could go on further, it was still tight. On the norm, most Toyota bearings I have replaced do not have any play, just noisy, and they will last a long time even though they make noise. Unlike a Chevy, once it makes noise it wont be long before it disintegrates. Everyone I have replace will make the whole front have this roaring vibration and it's hard to tell what side, or is it the driveline, or tires, no It's one side bearing, that's it.

 

I hope that's all it is! I replaced the rear bearings last year so maybe it's time for the fronts to go. They lasted 270k miles so that's pretty good!

 

I hope as well, do let us know. At least you have the easy one, hardest part is the axle nut, (assuming you have 4x4)

 

What was the outcome? I have an 06 tundra, at 160k and have this exact same problem. Thought it was tires, just got new tires, and it wasn't tires.

I had an identical experience with an 02 4runner, I never could diagnose the problem, and ended up selling it.

 

I ended up trading it in on a 2018. I know the guy that bought it from the dealership and he said it was a front wheel bearing.

 

Thats one way to fix the problem. Buy a new truck!

No problem! I had my rear bearings replaced at about the same mileage you have on your truck. It sounded like the noise was coming from up front and I actually had a mechanic tell me it was the carrier bearings in the front end. Luckily I got a second opinion from the dealership. It was the rear bearings. I also replaced my drive shaft support/carrier bearing right before I traded the truck. It was bad and making a popping noise at low speed acceleration. Sounded like a bad CV axle. That's an easy repair to do yourself. I think the part was cheap from NAPA. Less than $100 if I remember right.

 

As bizarre are this sounds ,I had a roaring sound coming from the from of my Tundra and it drove me nuts. No vibration ,just a loud roaring sound. As it turns out, the air cleaner horn attached to the passenger-side left fender was vibrating at certain speeds- this was amplified since it was attached to the bumper. I torqued down all the bolts and tightened everything up- problem solved.
