Hey guys what MPG are you getting while towing? I'm contemplating a move from Denver to Florida and I'm trying to price out my options. If I go with a moving service it will be at least $5k. However, I've read that my house hold junk has an average weight of 5k lbs, assuming a 2k trailer I can safely haul that with my 2018 5.7 tundra the 1800 miles I need to go, especially because I have the tow package.

So this is where you come in. If I'm right about 8mpg that would mean 225 gallons needed and if gas is say $3.15 a gallon then that would be about $710, which is much less then $5k.

    Am I wrong?

... this is a joke, right?

Even if you got 2mpg at 1800mi and 3.15/gal you be spending 2835... still way better than 5k... except you have to do all the packing and lifting lol

We’ve got way too much shit to move to pull with the tundra... last move 3 years ago we had 2 17’ Uhauls, and still had to get one of their 10’ box trailers... and we’ve had 2 more kids since then... I’m stuck now
    Happy moving!! :)

Not a joke. Weighing my options and deciding what I want to do. It'll be hard to leave Denver though. . .

Moved from Northern California to southern. Then to Utah. Then to Austin TX, now in Houston. Utah was the best: great weather (4 seasons) - plenty to do with each season. I could see why leaving Denver would be hard, but depends on where you’re going.

No matter where you end up, just make the most of it. People are about the same everywhere you go: some good, some bad, some just badass. Every place has interesting things to offer, just explore and avoid nostalgia. Things were never as good as you remember them to be :)

I would say your mpg estimate is close but maybe a little low. Pulling my 26’ TT which comes in around 7k loaded I average about 9-10mpg. That’s on pretty flat ground like what you will see once you get out of Colorado. My longest trip was from central Ohio to the very top of UP Michigan. About 14hrs each way.

Depending on trailer size and weight you will be fine. One of the guys on here moved cross country with a 10k lb loaded 24’ encloses last year.

Are you thinking about renting a trailer or buying?

I would prefer to rent, but don't know where to find one big enough.

Here is an option. Not sure how many trips your taking out to FL if you go, but if multiple trips are needed, take the light load first, buy a trailer out east. Way cheaper than this area, drive back, load up and head back to FL.

Another option is to purchase a good used trailer and sell after you arrive if you don’t want to keep it.

Enclosed. I want my stuff out of the elements. Also, I'm not making that drive straight so I want eyes off as well

Disconnect your truck battery when staying overnight at hotels. Prevents thieves from taking your entire life possesions in one fell swoop. Trust me on this. Be safe.

Good idea, but I am broke so I was going KOA it. I have a tent for my bed and I was going to leave it in with my personal bed inside the tent. It may be harder to steal when a light sleeper with two dogs and some heat is in the bed of the truck ;-)

bring your battery into your hotel room with you?
    Seems strange, but makes sense.

When we moved from Salt Lake area in Utah to Houston area in Texas we didnt stop, we just drove the 26 hours only stopping for gas / bathroom. (two drivers - took longer due to the heavy load: mountains and weight related speed restrictions).

You still moving @Ike74? I thought i saw some messages from you indicating you may not be?

Think like a thief. If you break in and try to jump a vehicle and it won’t start, then are you going to pop the hood and start trying to fix a problem? Nope. Leave the battery in its place. Just disconnect a terminal. I carry a 10mm short wrench in my glovebox for such occasions.

I've got a small tool kit under the drivers seat in case i need some tools while out and about.. Not everything I'd ever need, but it's come in handy a few times.

Thinking like a thief: unless I tripped an alarm (unlikely with the battery disconnected) I'd likely spend a few minutes investigating... the truck got there, so it's not very likely it broke down there. No one is really going to question a guy with the hood up unless he started acting like a tweaker... Ballsy enough to steal a truck: ballsy enough to pop the hood for a moment I figure. I'm way to nervous of a person to do that though - I freak out when MY alarm goes off... frantically trying to shut it off...

People usually stop and offer help... I've had the hood popped adjusting head lights in the dark and never had any issues... some have stopped to offer help, but no one has ever asked for proof of ownership in such situations. so, even though I've never stolen someones car, I think I'd spend the minute or two to pop the hood and see what's going on if I was trying to steal a car... You dont even need a tight connection on the battery, just enough to get it to turn over then you can run on the alternator (no need for tools).

When in Puerto Rico we used to leave the windows down and doors unlocked. Never had a problem with break ins. Reverse psychology. Just don’t leave 10k in cash on the front seat.

It is still a might at this point, still weighing my options. I know I am in love with the thought of moving, I can't stand living in a 300k house that is on 898 sqft! But leaving all our friend's behind is a difficult thought. We are checking out the area I could transfer to first week of August. If we like it, then we will move spring 2019.
