Upgrading Suspension in stages ok ?

Discussion in 'Suspension' started by captain_bij, Jul 12, 2018.

?

Which option?

  1. King's Front - Stock Rear

  2. King's Front - Upgrade shocks in rear to something cheaper

  3. Fox 2.0 Front + Rear

  4. Save your money and keep the leveling kit.

I have a question for the wonderful people of Tundras.com

My Tundra came with a 3/1 leveling kit on it. Although it rides fine, pretty smooth actually, I'm looking into upgrading my suspension.

What do you guys think about upgrading the front coil overs to King's and leaving the rear stock.

Or upgrading the front to kings and the rear's to something less expensive (bilstein's or something).

I've always loved the way kings look, something about that blue, but open to recommendations of other suspension as well. Fox 2.0 seem to be a good cheaper alternative where I can upgrade the front and the rear for the same price as king's just in the front. I just cant wrap my head around spending $4000 on suspension when my truck rarely sees dirt and I wont be going on high speed runs for extended periods of time.

My goal is I want it to ride as smooth as possible over bumps, fire roads, trails, etc. I drove in my buddies gmc 1500 which has a long travel kit and everything just feels like butter. I know long travel is a whole other animal, but want it to feel similar to that, I don't want it rock crawl or anything like that.

(oh, one side note, I don't tow regularly, but my father in law has a travel trailer and his truck just took a shit, so probably will have to take that around once or twice a year. So needs to be compatible for towing)

Any advice is much appreciated and loving the forum!

    Cheers!

    for Tundras, I wouldn't go below 2.5
depends how much off road you want and how much you will beat up on your truck. Kings are top of the line. Some good bilsteins are nice too and will be cheaper. But yeah, get rid of spacers and blocks.

Kings, ADS, Fox 2.5, bilsteins, Toytec boss are all good.

    Toytec good price point too.

I’d say upgrade the fronts to Kings and leave the rear stock until you can fit rear Kings into the budget. I have 2.5 Radflos in front and 2.0 Boss shocks in the back and it rides pretty good, though someday I plan to at least upgrade the rears to RR shocks to help. I’ve only heard good things about King suspension. You may be able to do 2.0 Fox all around if you’re not off-roading and be happy with it.

coilovers front is nice for adjusting imo. You don't have to get reservoirs. Icon, fox, toytec, bilstein offer that option

I am currently running Kings in the front after switching out a leveling kit, still waiting to upgrade the rear....it will is painful knowing and feeling the difference from front to back, but will be worth it in the end.

I can get about $1k off the fabtech kit, which makes it a really good deal with the UCAs

Took me months saving for my kings and researching, I’m sure you don’t need new suspension like right now at this moment so save your money for Kings which are the best I believe. Get both front and rear at the same time so they can be rebuilt at the same time and put on your stock suspension while they’re being rebuilt. You can wait, save your money then buy kings when the time is right. Look at my shitty tires but those blue shocks are worth it, saving money for tires and wheels(keeping the wife happy).

ADS is the best you can get for the money. They don’t sell different tiers so what you get is the best they make (which is on par with Kings race shocks). You can definitely do it in stages, that’s what I did.

It’s a show setup, I don’t really drive the truck. Can easily swap it with a cheap rim/tire setup if need be.

Why not upgrade the rear shocks first with ads fox or kings. ? I see people mention to do the front first. In my crewmax i feel the rears harsh for fire roads gravel roads and such

How much did it run you? How is it riding now?

Front coilovers run about $1599/pair and the rears are about $949/pair. Ride quality can be improved greatly with a bit of tuning. If you're interested DM us for more info!
