Any of you guys own a Winchester or Marlin lever action? When I was 2 my dad purchased a 1957 winchester model 94, .30-30. To this day its mint. I love this rifle because its just plain awesome and because my dad who passed away in 2007 gave it to me. Recently I've decided to start using it to hunt with. Ive got other hunting rifles, but decided to honor him by using it. Anyway, obviously its pre 64 and still original. It never had a dovetail sight put on, but instead the year my dad bought it he installed a tang sight.

Most people use just the sights with these, but with the right ammo, you can get pretty accurate even up to 200 yards. So I've decided to turn it into a scout rifle. I wont be drilling or tapping into the metal or wood though. I'd never ruin it.

I recently bought a forward mount scope rail for it since its a top eject. The scope ill use is a leupold IER 2.5x28mm scout scope with Warne quick detach rings so I can still shoot it with the regular sights if I need to. Ill be installing a sling too, but it will be with a leather butt mount instead of tapping the wood. For the front part of the sling im going to replace the rear barrel band with a marlin 336 band that has the sight mount on it already and just put the original part in the safe.

I recently bought a no drill sight rai. This thing is slick and uses the existing screw holes and dovetail sight mounting area to attach it.

There are a lot out there that dont think much of scoping a model 94, but I dont care. Ill never sell it and its all about what I want out of it. I plan to fill my garage freezer full of deer and little wild piggies. Just thought I'd share. Ill get a pic of the rifle in the next day or so, but this is what came today:

The model 94 was the original carbine assault rifle! Amazing that 57 years later it still shoots like a dream.

Nice rifle! I have been pretty tempted to pick one of these up to my collection.

Nice looking rifle. I have a Marlin 336 in .30-30...not sure on the year that it was manufactured.

My father left me a model 94 when he passed, it too was a pre 64 but had a dovetail open sight on it. I never hunted with it, cause I have hunted for 30 years with a model 700 Remington in 270 caliber that I bought new way back when. But my brother in law who I love like a brother had no deer rifle at the time has hunted with it for 15 years now here in new england, and it has put venison in his freezer on many occasions. It is an excellent deer round and brush gun. I also will never sell or trade it for anything.

I don't own one yet. My goal is to collect all of the Winchester 18xx lever actions in every caliber.

Screenshot_2015-10-31-20-34-21.jpg Unfortunately mine is post '64.....a '74 Winchester 30-30. They make an excellent brush rifle because of their overall short length

In 2004, I was w/o a rifle due to a horseback hunting disaster. I goofed off long enough that hunting season snuck up on me and I still didn't have a rifle. A buddy wanted me to take him hunting so he lent me his Marlin 336 in .30-.30 Winchester. I shot a real nice 4X4 mule deer at an obscene distance with it and it's open sights. So you don't think I'm trying to brag or anything, it was a downhill shot, very steep. At any rate, I fell in love with that rifle. Unfortunately I went out and purchased a Winchester mod. '94 instead of a Marlin. I never could hit anything with that rifle! I've since sold it and purchased a brand new Marlin 336 and LOVE it! The thing is a tack driver AND, very important at my age, you can easily put a scope on it. Mine doesn't have a scope yet as I feel quite confident with it out to about 200 yards. YMMV.

How about a Model 1894 Savage 303 that be older than me? Biggest hassle is they are different than the British 303 so finding ammo is almost impossible...also have my dads old Winchester 30 30, not sure how old it is, don't really shoot it as my dad had long arms so had a custom stock built for it...most folks go to put it up and end up with the butt under their arm pit!

According to what I was able to find, this round was only marginally superior to the Win. 30-30. The "arms race" was just as fast and furious back in the day as it is today. Lol! Someone always coming out with the end all/be all round/rifle combo. ; ) If this rifle still shoots well, I say use it to hunt with or just take to the range for fun. How cool would it be to take a deer or whatever with such an old rifle? As far as the Winchester is concerned, if you wanted to shoot/use it, it isn't that hard to get another stock for it. Cool that you have these guns. Enjoy!

The British .303 definitely has some history and mostly very good. I've always loved that 1894 Savage design.

Actually, the 303 Savage was a proprietary round developed by Savage just for this rifle. The 303 British probably had a little more poop than this round. And I'll agree, it is an excellent round. I'll be honest with you, I had to look it up to make sure as I wasn't 100% sure. Lol!

I have a marlin 236 lever action fires .35mm. Great rifle sights are a little off but I still hit the target 100 yards out.

Anyone interested in a 1892 Winchester saddle ring rifle. 38/40 rounds. Purchased new by Texas ranger for what that's worth. Think dads ready to sell.

To the OP, if you are a handloader hit me up with a private message and I will be glad to share a favorite load or two with you. I have a mod 94 made in the 70s and it was a real challenge to find a factory load that it liked. I wouldn't call it a tack driver even with my pet load but it's the best I've found.

I have bought and/or traded for 5 Marlin lever actions. Four were in .35 Remington and one was in .22 S/L/LR. I gave away two of the .35 Remington's to family members.
All were very accurate, side ejection and easy to scope. If I were to purchase a lever gun today I would look for an older Marlin 336 or a pre-1964 Winchester. I really like the .35 Remington caliber especially with the new Hornady "Leveroution" ammo. I reload several different metallic calibers including the .35 Remington. However, I cannot reload a better .35 than the Hornady. This turns the .35 Remington into a true 200 yard cartridge.

Whether you use a 30/30, .35 Remington or whatever, shot placement is the key to a quick kill. I have Leupold scopes on all my Marlins and really like the 2X7 Vari-X scopes. I have taken many deer early and late when the light was poor and the Leupold scopes, set at 2X or 3X, IMO made the difference.

My favorite scope is the first Leupold scope I purchased. It is a 3X9 Leupold Vari-X II with an adjustable objective lens. It cost about $250 in 1986 and you can still get that much or more for one on EBAY to this day. Leupold's have a lifetime warranty even if you are not the original owner.

One key fact that I have discovered over the years regarding Leupold variable power scopes is that they keep very, very close to the same point of impact when you change from one power setting to the next. Normally, I zero at the highest power setting and hunt on the lowest. When zeroing scopes for others, I have noticed significant point of impact changes. When this happened, I re-zeroed the XYZ brand scope at the level the person chose to hunt at and told them not to change the magnification level.
