I plan on having the 18" rear. No more MX tracks for me. At this point in my life, as much as I love getting air time, will be limited to short air time.

No shit. Gravity is a real bitch, and she always wins. At my age, bones don't bend anymore and pain lingers WAY longer than it should.

Why on earth would you consider a yz450 for the woods?

YZ450FX, this is just what they had, not what I would buy....

Says the guy that recommends a YZ250.

I opened this thread back up.

Bike was decided, I went with a 17' KTM450XC-F with very low hours ( 2.9), at a great price. Thank you for most of everyone's input, some like 2t and some 4t.

    ktm450.jpg

So far, with the limited riding I have done with it...this bike rips, point and shoot. #2 map is madman. #1 map will be used. This has more power than anyone needs.

-After a couple of hours, suspension is set up except the shock. Moving up to the next weight spring. Air Fork pressure was upped to 145 psi (was at 121), and may up that to 160 psi depending how it balances out with the rear.
-Adjusted the throttle free play according to the book specs, adjusted clutch/brake lever position to minimize arm pump.

Next up is gear ordering. Sooooo...

-What knee braces is everyone using these days? My last set where DonJoy's, but damn those were expensive. My knees are important, and not having another surgery is key.

I have my eyes on these:
Mobius X8, EVS WEB Pro, Asterisk Ultra Cell. I have used EVS in the past, with good results, just wondering some of the opinions of others.

    Sweet ride man!! Congrats.

Knee braces are tough to recommend as everyone has a different idea of what they should feel like as well as vastly different leg sizes. I personally run POD knee braces and love them. But my buddies run either Asterisk or the Mobius. I really wanted to like the Asterisk but they just don't feel right on me (bird legs). Do you have any local bike shops that stock any of the listed? I would either try them on before you buy or order them someplace that has a solid return policy so if you get them and try them on and don't like them back they go for another set.

    Gorgeous bike!

CTI Customs are what I have, and are used by a ton of top pros now, but are expensive. I had them prescribed and covered by insurance after tearing my ACL, but without insurance help they run into the thousands.

PODs, Asterisk, Mobius, EVS are all good braces for off the shelf. You really need to get out and try a few on. For example the Mobius, where they have the "X" behind your knee, can get irritating for some, and not others.

I was checking out DonJoy last night and the pricing has came way down from my last set.

For a moment I was asking myself do I really need them, but came to my senses.

Yeah...you don't need them til you need them type of thing. As you know they don't guarantee anything but IMO cheap insurance.

    Exactly!!!

When I blew through a long sweeping berm from getting hit from the rear, my knee went every way it wasn’t supposed to. If I would have needed to piss, I would have in that moment. Hauling ass, WFO on my wife’s YZ250F.

CTI, spendy though. But to an earlier point, it's got to fit you right, or you'll never wear them and it's all subjective. it's pretty easy to get a prescription for them from you doc though.

I can get anything prescribed in Colorado...we be high...and you know this man.

Now I just have to see if my insurance covers them, or partial.

It’s vital for fit. People don’t want to be in pain or bloody after a ride.

My prescription literally said "MX brace x2". When I called insurance to check, they said no, but once an Ossur rep used the right codes and what not, I got them completely free of cost.

I've only worn one pair of EVS braces and they worked great for me. Having a pair of knee socks makes a world of difference as far as comfort goes.

On my free time from arguing with people towing 5vers with Tundras, I had some time with the KTM.

Installed a spark arrestor end cap. 3F20123F-B584-4B83-A86E-7AE3BB676469.jpg

    Removed kick stand.

    Installed a battery charging cable.

    8624FA62-0C4B-49F7-AEB5-0CEECFFFBEB0.jpg

Installed a new shock spring since I don’t weigh 140 lbs.

    1C31559F-0969-4346-868B-0152100B2046.jpg

Bike still wasn’t handling well in corners. Felt loose, but only once in a while. I was putting adiquate weight on the opposite foot peg. The investigation started. I was moving the rear tire and noticed the left side swingarm would move around a lot. Well that was odd.
I had to put on the new shock spring anyway and remove the swingarm, so this was a good time to look into this issue. I pulled the swingarm pin out and needle bearings hit the garage floor as I moved the swingarm assembly back. Well this isn’t good on a bike that has 3.3 hours on it.
    3B1F0BAA-FB02-4F06-94AD-BF0B94ADE6E6.jpg
    AD161627-781E-4B6B-9278-73DDD04A0535.jpg

So the bushing, bushing caps were never installed in Austria. I called my buddy that I purchased it from and he had never had the swingarm off or even serviced. It was shipped to his home, and he put the front wheel and handlebars on. He emailed the dealership in FL and they are going to send a rebuild kit out. So that’s pretty cool. However, I already went to Slavens Racing in town and purchased one. Spares are always good.

Now I’m contemplating wrapping the exhaust.

No, I was really lucky I didn’t go ripping in the hills already. The swingarm would have been toast.

Yep. It’s pretty much done. When using the correct spring for riders weight with all gear, and preload the spring 10%, and it's usually pretty good, depending on if your in the middle of the spring rating (vs at the top or bottom). I will definately be using my other half with the tape measure.
