Bed Stiffeners - What do they do? Do I need them?

This is a common question we get at TOTAL CHAOS. If you're running a camper shell, bed rack, or just putting your truck through serious off-road abuse then you should consider Bed Stiffeners for your Tundra.

Over time the sheet metal channels in the bed can crack causing poor tailgate alignment and possibly damage to your lights. We reinforce the rear bed channels at the tailgate which is ideal for preventing bed flex and avoiding issues that come along with it.

The TOTAL CHAOS Bed Stiffeners also feature additional tie-down points. Adding a set will give you 6 tie down points and 2 light or whip mounts. *no load ratings are implied

Constructed of 3/16" steel these are built to last. We finish them in a durable black powder coat and include grade 8 hardware for the install. Are you running TOTAL CHAOS Bed Stiffeners or have questions about them? Post up :)

I think they help but with an RTT and the way the C channel frame flexes in the back I feel it needs more. But maybe it's just mine and @Spolar bed that has started to tear away from the frame. I am running two pieces of steel under the bed where it mounts to the frame to reinforce the stock mounts. Both the bed mounts on mine have cracked and allowed the bed to flex even more and I feel it is from the weight of the RTT while off-roading. Maybe these will prevent if installed ASAP. I installed them in the last year and it has helped but I am sure the damage was already done. The corners by the tailgate where these mount are also cracked but not as bad.

I was taking some measurements and you'd have to trim the decked system slightly. The corner of the decked system will contact just below the antenna/whip mount. You might be able to shave some material off the corner of the decked system and clear it.

I installed these on my 2010 Crewmax 4x4. Stiffens the bed for sure. No more jiggles. Ride got a bit firmer due to less body movement. I have King shocks. Previous owner hauled a lot on this truck. Some small cracks on the bed corners. Love this product. Next to buy is TC UCA's.

Agreed. I’ve had the TC bed stiffeners on for a long time and my bed was still taking damage. A heavy RTT mounted on the rails and hard off-road use are just not a good match. For casual wheeling it’s probably fine but really pushing ur truck with an RTT is gonna take its toll unless you have a bedcage and your tent is mounted to it and the frame.

I dropped my truck at the shop today, getting the frame boxed and he’s gonna weld up where the bed is separated, hopefully the damage is easily repaired but he’ll let me know when the bed is off and he gets a better look. But I’m at a point where I won’t be taking my RTT unless my family is with me. Solo trips I’ll be doing hammock camping and leave the rtt at home so I can wheel hard and not worry about it.

These stifferners I’m sure help, but they didn’t stop my damage and can’t take the place of proper frame reinforcement to protect the bed.

We appreciate the both of you posting up. TOTAL CHAOS Bed Stiffeners are designed to reinforce the rear channel where the tailgate mounts. The true function is to reinforce the tailgate opening and help prevent the spreading of this opening.

Extra weight on the bed rails will cause the bed to flex open and create a larger gap between tailgate and bedside. Eventually this can cause cracks at the bottom corner of the tailgate opening. Our Bed Stiffeners are designed to prevent this, but are NOT designed to help prevent cracking in other areas like the cross braces.

Some modifications would be required to get the two to work together. The swing case bracket mounts almost exactly where our Bed Stiffeners do.

Sweet. One more thing to add to the list.

    DCsleeper, that's a spray-on liner, right?

    A bunch
This is x1000 if you're driving down rough roads a lot. Old company I worked for used sled decks for 2 ATV's plus supplies (~1800 lbs total) and the legs would punch through F350 steel beds because of the rough roads we drove on all the time. Had to have reinforcing braces from the sled deck anchor points directly to the frame, from then on we only broke the sled decks in the ~150k km's we drove them before they were sold off.

Part of the problem is auto manufacturers are using thinner metals to save weight and increase MPG. Newer vehicles aren't being built with the same structure and rigidity.

Totally agree- my old Toyota has a much thicker bed. But the stiffeners do work and have stiffened up the Tundra bed, didn't expect them to keep the cross braces from damage. Only added them to help keep the damage at the tailgate corners down.

These will work with or without spray-on bed liners! We've even seen them installed with bedrugs or plastic bed liners (slight modifications required)

I'm interested in these. I run a rack and it gets loaded often and sometimes heavy. This looks like a good solution to an inevitable problem on a stock bed. Are you offering any incentives for forum members, holidays, etc?

This would definitely be good "preventative maintenance" for your application. We don't offer any forum discounts or specials. Here are 2 dealers that have these on their site. Check them out for any special promotions

if the bed is line X as well as the 2 tie down points, can you still install the stiffeners ? Looks like you have to remove those 2 tie down points in order to mount the stiffeners
