I see all of these IPAs. What makes them good? What makes them bad? I dont think I have ever had one. Which one should I try?

First. What kind of beer do you normally drink? IPA’s are typically pretty bitter. It’s an aquired taste. Once used to it the bitterness tends to balance sweetness. So you can bump up the alcohol and add sweet citrus flavors but it complements the overall taste. I can give you recommendations based on where you live and what your tastes currently are.

I'm in CO. My go to beer is usually a hefe-weisse or a dunkel-weisse.
I also like ales and some lagers.

Ok. So most of your beers have a Bavarian floral flavor. Very mildly hopped. American IPA’s have a strong citrus and/or pine flavor and are heavily hopped. Based on your profile I’d recommend white ales and white IPA’s first. This will start to develop your palate. I’ll look up some of the Brewery’s nearby, but being you are in CO this will be difficult. So many!!

When I first tried the IPAs they were too bitter for me. Like @buckeyeinlv says they are an acquired taste. ( they were for me anyway, now I love them). Look for ones that have lower IBUs ( International Bitter Units) the higher the IBU the more bitter the beer will be. CHEERS!

Yup! Your typical microbrew lager or Pilsner will be maybe 10-25 IBU... you start getting into the bitter range probably 50 and up... ( your tastebuds may vary) Like @buckeyeinlv said, a pale ale would also be a good place to start.

    Dang... now I’m thirsty...

Here's one from Avery Brewing Co, Boulder, Co . Here's a sour that's splendid . ABV 6.2, pretty high for a sour. Mint taste , but smooth.

This was my first Belgium style ale.
8.7% alcohol (high octane for me)
You can taste the honey and some other spices.
Sorry to the beer aficionados that is the best I can articulate it for you (not being snarky)
I will be drinking more of this.

    Had these last night:

    Imperial biscotti chili hazelnut break
    Evil Twin Brewing Company
    Brooklyn, NY
    Imperial Stout with Chili pepper
    11.5% ABV, n/a IBU

Super dark. Toffee and hints of vanilla. Boozy. Not much chili pepper. 3.75/5.0
    C02F09CB-41B8-4393-97FB-43BD0FC22350.jpg

    In Perpituity
    Tree House Brewing Company
    Charlton, MA
    NE IPA
    6.7% ABV, n/a IBU

Pours very pale and hazy almost like pear juice. The aroma is incredible. Smells of grapefruit and citrus. Super smooth. Tropical citrus flavors. An outstanding beer. Unfortunately this is difficult to acquire. You can only buy it at the Brewery and only on a very limited basis. 4.5/5.0.

    Hurricane
    Tree House Brewing Company
    Charlton, MA
    NE Double IPA
    7.7% ABV, n/a IBU

Pours just like In Perpituity. Smells like orange juice. Smooth. Citrusy. Seriously these guys don’t make a bad beer. I just wish we could get it out here. 4.25/5.0

    American Lager
    4.4% ABV, 20 IBU

Not a huge lager fan. That said, this was good for it’s style. Light. Floral. Easy drinking. Pours blonde and clear. Good canned poolside beer. 3.5/5.0

Great beers you got there Buckeye, I'm hopefully trying Curiosity 50 this week. I live about 45 minutes from Charlton, my very good friend is a brewer at a local brewery called Cold Creek. I've got a bottle of Triple Shot in my fridge and a Single Shot as well.

[Edit] I see you live far away, maybe we can work out some sort of beer trade...although I believe it's illegal to ship beer?

    [Edit 2] Tonight when I get home I'll be cracking open a SAP from Treehouse, it's a decent IPA I'd rate it a 7 / 10.

You guys have some great beer up there. Every beer I’ve had from Tree House is amazing. I also like a lot of beer from The Alchemist Brewery. Not sure about the legality of shipping. I think it’s only illegal if you profit from the sale. I’d definitely be interested in working out a beer trade if it is legal. I acquired those Tree House beers from some customers of mine who live/work in Nashua, NH. Probably the only way I’ll get more is if they bring me more or we go to the brewery when I visit them.

On business travel, and had the day off. Why not try some local brew to bring back?

Craft Life Brewing | Geand O’ Lakes, FL. Roasted Punkin Pie | 6.4%

Roasted pumpkin aroma. Pours like an ale, but with no lace.
Taste of sweet roasted pumpkin and cinnamon. Great beer, and am glad pumpkin pie is coming back. Almost excited as @boardude is!
