Well, this came a little sooner than I thought it would.

A good friend of mine is in one of those places in life where keeping his "dream car" project just doesn't make sense. I think most of us have been there at one time or another and, to be honest, it sucks. He's a good guy and good friend and I feel bad for him.

We both had Mustangs when we were younger, just different generations. My first 2 cars were both '66 coupes and he grew up building Fox bodies.

Over beers one afternoon he told me about his upcoming career change and possible move and asked me if I was interested in buying his Mustang project. I hadn't really thought about a project car in awhile and if I were to do something along those lines it would be a late '20's early '30's coupe.

After talking it out over a few afternoon beer sessions I decided to go ahead and take the mustang with the hope of one day getting it back into his care.

Anyhow, went over to his place yesterday and rolled her out, cleaned her up a bit, and wrote a check. Will bring her over to my house in a couple weeks when another buddy with a race car trailer gets back from vacation.

That is sharp. What engine are you dropping in there? 5.7L Toyota?

Awesome project! Please don’t drop an LS in there! A new coyote engine would look and perform great.

    Lol... That would be sweet.

    It comes with a '93 302 Cobra that's been built up a bit. Also a T5 5 speed.

    IMG_20180613_080231_02.jpg

I'll have a lot of parts scrounging to do. Lots of missing parts.

There's a lot of back story that I'll post later but essentially the guys/shop doing the build stole the car, and some others, with all crap load of new parts. Cops were involved with the recovery and my friend was not able to recover all the stuff he had paid for and dropped off at the shop. $8k worth of suspension and a bunch of other stuff was lost/missing when the car was found.

Fak... I’d love to have a 65-66 fastback for a project. Someday.

Can’t wait to see how this shakes out.

Here's my first Mustang. I was 15 when I bought in '75 for $600. Had custom interior and just had all the dings taken care of right before it was totaled. It was on the did of the road with the flashers on when some drunk lady plowed into it. I was walking back to the car with a can of gas and saw the whole thing happen. Thankfully I wasn't in it.

    IMG_20180709_172019564.jpg

    IMG_20180709_172001069.jpg

Settled with my insurance and bought the wreck back so I could part it out. Mainly because I wanted the interior out of it since I had just had it custom done. Bought this white '66 to replace the wrecked '66. Swapped some parts over to the new one and sold the rest, at least what I could. Finally sold the white one about 12 years ago.

    IMG_20180709_172038797.jpg

In hindsight I never should have sold it as I had built the motor up pretty good and had put a top loader 4 speed in it. Just never drove it and it was at that point where I was looking at rebuilding it again. My kids were still young and there just wasn't the time or money to do it, so off it went. Kind of like my buddy right now with the fastback.

    I'll be awhile.

It's 2 cars grafted together and no title. I'll start the process of getting title done and clear before I spend another dime on it. It shouldn't be too bad as there's a ton of documentation/invoices and photos showing the build process.

Once I have a good title the party can start.

    Yeah, thieves just suck.

I'll build it as a driver, so it's not going to be perfect. I think it'll end up looking pretty good. I want to build it along the same lines as my buddy would have. We shared more than a couple beers with me picking his brain on the direction he was going to take it.

Like I said, if possible, I would love to see it get back to him somewhere down the road. I would sell it back to him only for the cash I have into it. Nothing more.

Thanks for the hook up Chris. I'll keep him in mind when I get the parts list going.

Another friend has a bunch of stuff left from his build that he's going to throw my way, so that'll be nice too. Here's his car. Although you're never finished, he finished his about 3-4 years ago.

Awesome. He has so many classic mustangs and resources. All the work that comes out of his paint booth is amazing.

    I LOVE your Suburban @HBdirtbag!

I had a '56 small window for awhile. Another one of those "wish I hadn't sold it" moments.

Sweet Mustang! I love the blue with white stripes and the fastbacks were always some of my favorites.

I have my dads 69 Mach 1 with a 351W that he bought back in 1990 as only the 3rd owner and did a complete restoration. We flew out to California to buy it and drove it back to Kansas City when I was 13...so I have a soft spot for old Mustangs.

    Freakin sweeeet!

Although I've always had '66, '69 is my is my favorite year Mustang. I'm also partial to red. I'm actually thinking about a repaint to red with white stripes.

Red with the white would look BA...but I do like that blue.

I like anything pre '72...they just started looking awkward after that for a lot of years. But to me, most cars started looking really awkward in the mid '70's.

Beautiful! Cant wait to see the progress on it. Nice of you to help your friend out. I think its a going to be hard to see it back to his care after you put some blood sweat and tears into this project! Either way, it will be a blast!

Our deal is "IF" I decide to let it go one day he'll have the opportunity to buy it back for whatever I have into it. I'm going to try and keep my total investment at no more than 15k. If I can do that, which I'm pretty sure I can, then I think it would be within his reach down the road. If he can't do it then it'll be fair market value to the next buyer.

We'll see how it eventually pans out.

Until then I'll drive the crap out of it, once it's drivable.

Well, hauled her home yesterday. What a friggen PITA. Since the car is on a cart I had to cut some plywood to cover the ramps. Of course the casters broke thru the ply 4 different times.

Other than that, and it being 108 friggen degrees, and the driveway having a 30 degree slope, and not having any brakes, and it just being 2 of us, and almost ripping the garage/laundry room door out of the wall (used as an anchor point) everything went pretty well.

Lots of thumbs up on the drive home.
