In my cummins the only time I ran at 80 psi was when hauling the toy hauler and that thing had a pin/bed weight of 3800 lbs. I doubt you're even remotely close to a hitch weight that high. Empty id run 45psi and that worked for pulling almost everything else.

 

That's a fair point. I missed the part where they said to replace the tires because they are too aggressive. Regardless though, kudos to the tech for understanding the problem and using data to identify root cause.

 

Root Cause still not known for sure otherwise problem would be solved. Putting 80 psi in the tires is a big red flag too. I expect more from my service tech. I do believe you are right about the Root Cause. Let's see how this plays out!

Totally what I have planned for next month! Especially now that Im going up to 35's because my new 33's just arent enough. I want my 35x11.50x18.

 

UPDATE: 4AM. Did the tires psi drop down to 50 and the ZPC 7 fkn times all lights were blinking successful and the same result every time. Takes off ok 2 seconds later Trac light comes on and nose dives loss of power. Put it this way at any speed 20 30 40 50 60 and I punch it the light comes on and I cant even pass a car safely. This blows!

 

What the tech might have meant when he said the tires are too aggressive is this. Even though it's larger a tire with an aggressive tread your Trail Grapplers actually gives you less traction on a paved roads because there is less surface contact with the tire on the road because of the larger open lug design say vs a racing slick. Running a 12.50 width spreads that contact over a larger surface area making it even worse as far as how many pounds per square inch so to speak, the tire is actually contacting the road in a given surface area. Strictly speaking on pavement (not off road) your stock 265-275 all season tires probably have more traction than your 12.50 width trail grapplers because more rubber is contacting the road. This is the main reason on my daily driver (mostly street) I personally like to stick with 285 (11.50) width tires in an AT or Hybrid. It's all a balancing act, it comes down to what is the the purpose of your truck when choosing the type of tire and what size. As far as the PSI is concerned IMHO I think even 50 is too high on that tire. I'm running my Ridge Grapplers at 38 PSI. When I got my supercharger installed I did every combination I could to get the best street performance out of the vehicle. I'm with Grey Wolf on this one, I hate nannies so I have a PAC T12 trigger device installed that shuts off my traction control and turns on my tow haul mod automatically at ignition. You can easily turn the TC back on with a push of the button if you feel you need it on wet roads or snow. For me I just don't want the engine to ever power down, that's just how I roll, I like it that way and I'm used to it. It's pretty easy with our 5.7's and 4:30 gears even without being supercharged to spin a tire off acceleration on pavement. I'm on my second set of Ridge Grapplers and think they are an awesome tire, might be worth taking a look at for you. You can see in my signature picture how I treated my first set before I decided to go bigger. Of course opinions vary and I may be talking out of my a** so take it for what it's worth.

 

Turn Traction Control off. That should fix it. lol

 

I ran those tires for years and I ran them with varying degrees of wear. Dealer is passing the buck IMO. They seem to always point to something aftermarket as the cause. Too many people running these tires without issue.

Find a set of stock take offs and slap them on and see if the problem goes away before dumping $$ on different tires.

 

Yep I think these are not the right tires for me. I am going to see what I can do but I doubt they will exchange them now. Worth a shot. I did want 35x11.50 though and these 33x12.50 got shoved down my throat

 

That tire pressure is ridiculous! Who set the pressure that high? You should be no more than 40 PSI. I have mine set at 36 front 35 rear which is plenty on a E rated tire. In Florida at 80 PSI driving 70 miles is a recipe for disaster.

 

This is getting crazy. Your right. Limp freakin mode? The obvious thing to do is lose the tires. Sometimes the obvious hits you in the face....heh..heh Problem is determining what size. We know stock size works. I think OP needs to go back to the place he got the tires. Explain WTF is happening and get some tires fitted that work?

 

Yep. The ECU isn't liking what is going on from the info from the sensors. My Taco would do the same thing on ice when I was up in Anchorage. I didn't go into limp mode but computer seemed confused to the point where braking was just simply gone. ABS and Traction control totally confused. I pretty much had to turn nannies off most of the winter. It's crazy how in a few cases just simply having the wrong footprint can trigger CHAOS!!!!

 

Just for grins. Drop to 35psi. Mark the rim and tire to see if the wheel may be slipping on a wheel. Just a thought as I've had it happen once.

 

Explain to tire guy that you simply can't run with those tires..that they are worthless to you since they trigger all sorts of sensors and putting truck in limp mode. Show them this thread with all of our concerns. No one's fault here but your tire guy should make it right and...He will get great props here from us!

 

Another off the wall thought....have you checked to see if all tires the same size?

 

Midwesterner already brought that up as potential issue causing ECU to flip flop. It's a valid point for sure. To all out there.......You best have a spare that is the same size as your tires. Just sayin.

 

Agreed. I am going to drive over there im a few. Hes cool the problem is hes slow at getting shit done. Took him 2 weeks to finally get my tires. So I can imagine this swap out will take a freaking month! Id like to go 35x11.50 I swear! There has to be something wrong here. He has to accept it. I need my truck right.

Well the tire shop did the 80psi. I will go to 35 and see what happens. It may also explain the floating and sway it had up on the interstate last weekend going to st pete and WC.

 

This, even at 50 with an empty truck, it may be too high. I had problems with Michelin Defender at 60 PSI (was hot and I was lazy after towing so I didn't lower the pressure back down). 35 psi, nary a problem.

 

I asked that long ago in his other thread, he said they were. It’s a great thought.

 

Good advice. Not enough people do this and then they have issues when they get a flat and are already flustered, so it compounds the issue.

 

Absolutely! I checked all 4 with the shop light 2 times. Who knows maybe they are defective and not good. I will drop to 35 psi now and try again.

Ok so I talked to the shop owner and he kind of laughed it off at first. Then I hit him with reality really hard.

We all stick together to help each other with everything.
You own a 2008 Tundra and if you needed help they would all dive in head first to do so.
These are not random jokers telling me false information. Again these guys all still drive TUNDRAS daily, have owned several and have all modified all of them 1,000 different ways.
Ive exhausted all my resources and it all comes down to the truck isnt functioning properly now with these tires.
Lets swap them back to factory on Monday and go from there.

Needless to say he accepted everything I had to say and replied ok See you monday. He was stunned.

I said there is a such thing as defective or wrong for this application. We are at that point now. See you Monday for the swap test.
