Buy Tundra Now, or Wait for New Generation?...

Thinking about getting a new Tundra, but have been reading that Toyota will redesign in 2018. Any inside info about this, and if so, is it worth the wait? I really like the current Tundra's, but better gas mileage would be a welcome improvement.

 

All depends on your current needs. I personally would never buy the first model year of any new vehicle where the drivetrain has changed. Don't really want to be a ginnea pig. Just like GM, they had a solid motor with the 5.3 and then they tried to improve gas mileage with cyclinder deactivation and fucked it all up (why I'm now driving a Tundra). But anyway back to the point, who knows if Toyota will redesign in 2018. If you need a truck now then I wouldn't wait, if you can wait a couple years and see if they do redesign then wait. I love my 15' and unless they come out with a heavy duty anytime soon, I'll drive it until the wheels fall off.

 

My first year 07 is still running like a clock. Just like most 07 Tundras still are. After all it's a Toyota. Domestics are another issue. New models/new gens will cost more , then again it's a new gen (possibly). The new Titan XD diesels are selling themselves for example. Obviously you can make a decent deal on a new previous year model too. Toyota is pretty tight lipped about anything. Until you see some photos taken of a covered over new Toyota looking truck on a test run or something leaked online , then we just don't know. Like mdavis said, If you need a truck now, get it. Or wait if you don't.

 

Easy...get one now and then trade it in in a few years if you like the new one better.

 

Yeah buy now and trade up in 2020 after the bugs are out.

 

What bugs?? Like the non existent bugs with my 07??? Every new vehicle has some issues. The 07 Tundra had 20+ 5.7Ls with bad cranks due to poor metalurgy early on from a very reliable supplier. 100K plus Tundras built in 07. Do the math. OK' I'll do it for you= 0.02%. Pretty decent numbers from a quality stand point and my line of work is in quality.

Note: I'm not too thrilled about the AIP failures, but if you took the total Tundras built since 07 up to 2013, a very, very small amount have had AIP issues. Still no excuse. That's why Toyota extended warranty to 10 years, 150,000 miles. What other truck mfr would do that???? que in crickets....................

 

In a diferrent thread you talked about your DRL's come on 99% of the time. That 1% that they don't, equals bug.

 

Actually equals a gnat. A very small gnat. Not losing sleep over it. FIAT RAM death shake is another story.

 

I'm just messing with you. Toyota did good the first time with the 5.7. But what will they have to sacrifice to get better fuel economy? Which we all know they're going to have to do better.

 

Go ahead and buy one today - tomorrow is not a given.

I'm guessing, quite wildly here, a smaller cubic inch turbo'd motor with decent HP and a lot of torque. Like the new Taco. Now that Nissan has a diesel, no more EPA, cafe std excuses from Toyota. Is Toyota a player or not??

 

So true. My coworker,***, had a golf ball brain tumor removed about a year ago. About 2 months ago he decided to get his super clean 74 RIV redone. $20K and still in the shop. He bought a house for $232K two weeks ago. Hasn't even closed yet. *** was supposed to go up with me to Ft Collins Monday for an onsite calibration job. He couldn't go. Probably go the Ford route and cut weight with a high strength steel frame, and then give it the @matluth treatment: twin turbos, a smaller CI motor, etc.

I would wait for new model come out, or look at other brand.
After bought 2015 CM, Toyota miss some basic things for a truck over $50K.
Exterior:
1. Should add 2 more sensors to front bumper (beside license plate), won't alert when the truck close to an object in front license plate even a vehicle, unless close to conner, sensors color should match with exterior paint.
2. Since the truck have power fold mirrors, should auto fold in when vehicle is locked.
Interior:
1. Add glove box light and center storage box, i got surprised that didn't come with the truck, my 1990 Honda had glove box light.
2: Footrests light on both front and rear.
3: Side mirrors buttons should lighted like others.

Should not listen to scare advisors, about sick, cancer or ..........!
Make a list what you want on new truck, then start shopping.
You spend $40K to $50K for a new truck and not happy, don't buy it.

 

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply to my post. I decided to get a new truck now, and just brought it home today. I think I'm going to love it, and if the new ones come out in three or four years, it wouldn't be the first time I went to a new model after only having a vehicle for a few years.

Buy now as the 5.7 is a known great engine. Toyota will have to mess with the mpg on the new one and look at what happened with the Taco 3.5l. Honestly it will be 2-4 mpg difference which really doesn't add up to all that much in the end.

Most importantly though the 5.7 has a supercharger available but the new engine probably won't or at least for a long time since TRD will not be developing it. Even if I could never afford a sc the idea of one being available is worth it to me.

The new smaller liter engine will probably be turbo'd. Remember, pure speculation on my part.

 

I'm waiting for the new design, I prefer the 2nd gen exterior but the 3rd Gen has the nicer interior, so the 4th gen should be the best of both worlds.

 

This is the age-old question plagued by every car model ever built. You don't know, at this point, what the 2018 will look like, or for that matter what your life will look like in 2018. Personally, I'll make decisions based on what I know over rumor and innuendo any day. 2018 can take care of itself.
