I'm having a truck inspection done on a 2006 Tundra I'm buying soon and the car inspector told me that it's a risk to engage 4wd on pavement rather than sand or dirt and that it has the potential to lock up. He said it's a remote possiblity but have you guys heard of this happening with the first gen Tundras?????

On a straight road it’s fine. Turning, on dry pavement can grind the gears

What Sean said. Just a quick engage/disengage is all you need to determine if it’s working properly.

I hit a couple miles of dirt roads about once a month or two and use 4wd at that time.

My 4Hi got exercised a few hours ago up in the sticks. For a simple inspection on pavement......just make sure it engages/disengages properly in 4Hi/4Lo where it sits....

It can also be bad if you have slightly different size tires. For example if you only buy two new tires and put them in the rear and have the old ones in the front or vice versa.

There’s a dude in my neighborhood that runs 4WD full time on his Silverado. I laugh every time I here the tire chirping around the corners.

Very low maintenance actually. No more than the rear diff. How hard can it be to engage 4 wheel drive every couple months and drive a few miles?

I engage 4WD before hitting 95 with a marked patrol vehicle behind me, while snapping my passengers nipples and running for mailboxes.
