    1. My dad gave me this car when I was in high school. He had already put over 500k miles on it and just had the interior re-done. Always told me “this car has been to the moon and back”. Had to change out the manifold every time smog was due but put the old one back on for better performance and mileage. I beat the shit out of it and thought he wouldn’t notice. One day I folded the driver side door backwards on some brush trying to get out of a sand wash. Didn’t go to well when he also asked what all the sand was up in the frame rails and shifted battery. Couple cigarette burns on the new interior too.

I was and am a Chevy powered hot rod guy. Didn't matter what it was, it got built, sprayed and or boosted. Finally got old enough to think a little more practically and bought a used Taco in 2011.

    2. This pickup was awesome. 2wd and built like a tank. Got it so I could start taking my dirt bike out. I remember going up to Gorman one day and the truck started sputtering and losing power. Pulled over and popped the hood with it still running. Cigarette hanging from my lips I almost got sprayed with gasoline. The fuel pump was gushing. I couldn’t believe nothing blew up or went down in flames. Limped it home somehow and replaced the mechanical fuel pump. Many other memories like driving it with no brake pads using the parking brake everywhere I went until the cable snapped. Jumping it 4th gear pinned, and on and on.. oh so much fun being young and dumb. Eventually my brother ended up with it and sold it.

2005 4Runner V8 sport (awesome vehicle - never had a single problem in the 110,000 miles that we owned it)
2013 Tundra 5.7 CM (bought it because of the experience with the 4Runner. It has been ok reliability-wise. Decent truck)
2016 4Runner (wife's current vehicle. Have had no problems so far. Wish that they still had the V8)

I grew up a Ford guy, and have had several other makes over the years. In my experience, the 4Runner is a solid platform. My Tundra is pretty good, but I don't think it is built as well as the 4Runners. Not only the reliability issues, but even the finish on the interior (the fabric in my Tundra is loose in spots - has been like that since new), the alignment of panels, etc - they are all better on the 4Runners in my opinion.

My dad had an 83 Toyota pickup, mom had a 79 Celica GT liftback. My brother owned an 84 pickup, and an 80 Supra, and I just remembered he owned a Solara convertible and currently drives a Camry Hybrid and a 2014 Tundra CrewMax Limited. One could say we are a Toyota family.

My first car at 16 was a hand me down 1973 Toyota Corona Deluxe Wagon from the parents.
Drove that thing like a rally car racer on the dirt roads to the beach for a few years.
Rolled it once in the soft dirt...fixed it...drove it a few more until it ceased because I was a lazy shit and didn't keep up with the oil.

Dovetail story. 74’ Corolla driving back from Hatteras Lighthouse noticed oil running up the front windshield. Pulled over and discovered that I had forgotten to put the oil cap back on after checking and adding some oil. The cap fell in a place in the engine where I could recover it thankfully. The engine dipstick was dry and had to drive another 20 miles to the gas station for oil. Thing took some abuse and keep ticking.
