That was the prototype Toyota released in the mid / late 90s to show off what the 2nd gen was going to be built off of.

The Concept (whatever it's from) is ugly... But I find that about most concepts. Generally the production models dont look much like the concepts IMO.

They went from the tiny grill of the 13's to the larger one on the 14's. Looking at other Manufactures it seems like the "meaner" looking front ends will be a round for a few more years in half ton trucks (raptor anyone?)

With my taste.. the concept is butt ugly... but as I've said on all these speculation forums... We'll just have to wait and see :D

this shit happens every year and everyone is always wrong.

look at the rest of the toyotas, they are going for angles and aggressive shapes. those spy pics just look like refreshes of the 2018. the headlights look like the current LEDs.

just wait until the fall. also diesel isnt happening. titan xd sales are pretty shit, and toyota is going to jump through epa's hoops to bring theirs over here.

That blue concept truck looks like a Gen 2 that has a problem with excessive consumption of bonbons, oreos, and Big Macs. Some extra junk in the trunk. Needs to get out and run some laps.

The XD is a truck without a clear category. The diesel engines within distinct market categories seem to be selling just fine (e.g. 2.8l diesel in the Colorado). If Toyota was able to find a way to fit a compact, lightweight diesel into a Tundra, without blowing up its dimensions, I think it would sell very well.

And btw, Titan sales in general have always been mediocre. I don't think the inclusion of a diesel option necessarily exacerbated that trend. I certainly see the 5.0l Cummins Titan's frequently enough that I wouldn't consider them unicorns.

How is the xd in a different category as a tundra with a diesel?

Aside from fuel efficiency, what would the diesel achieve in a tundra? Would you feel comfortable towing 15,000 with a tundra's frame?

Are you comparing the XD to the current version of the Tundra or to a hypothetical version which was beefed up to accept a diesel engine?

The Titan XD is most definitely more HD than any other 1/2 ton on the market, including the Tundra. That's why some people refer to it as truck of the 5/8 ton category (somewhere between a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton). The frame and overall chassis are much beefier on the XD.

A diesel, if designed and tuned appropriately, would most definitely get better fuel efficiency than what the Toyota's 5.7l v8 is getting (that engine doesn't exactly set a high benchmark when it comes to fuel efficiency). The current Tundra's frame would likely not be suitable for towing 15k lbs...Toyota would need to redesign the the platform for such duties.

But honestly, I don't think Toyota even needs to develop an in-betweener truck like Nissan did. Just reinforce and optimize the current Tundra platform (maybe box the frame, and put some better brakes on it) and put a smaller turbodiesel (v6 or a small v8, like what's used in the overseas LandCruiser) into it. The engine weight shouldn't be all that much different from the 5.7l gasoline v8. People would buy that in a heartbeat...

    As others stated
    [IMG]
*This is the 2nd Gen concept
    [IMG]
*This is the Titan in camo from a couple years ago.

*This looks like the current 3rd gen in camo. hood bulge, headlights, windshield and rear door windows are unchanged. probably from the 2018 updates.

At this point its all speculation. Based on the Toyota surveys I've been getting, i'd summarize Toyota is seriously considering all the new features like 360* camera views, fuel economy, sound system, seat and cab options.

It is going to take a pretty kitted 202X update with a MSRP at ~50K to get me away from my 3rd gen.

So you're saying Toyota should just change the whole Tundra platform to be a 5/8-3/4 ton? What I mean is the frame would be the same for the 1/2 ton as the other "HD" version, but maybe with a few downgrades (similar to how they currently have a version with the Tow Package on a 5.7l vs no tow packaged 4.6l - the different rear diff, oil cooler, and such resulting in a lower tow rating for the 4.6 version i describe)... probably less "HD" leafs, shocks, and breaks...?

No, what I'm saying is that Toyota would be better off keeping the Tundra platform close to its current size and just put a smaller, lighter diesel into it....there is no need to beef up the Tundra into a HD 'lite' like Nissan did with the Titan XD.

I must have been confused by this part:

I'm not saying they go lite on the "HD" - I left it open - they could do a full 3/4 ton :)
There seems to be a market for it... albeit not a very large one on the consumer side. I doubt Toyota would do it though. They've already said their manufacturing facilities are operating over capacity for the current demand on the Tundras (though I cant seem to find that article now...) even though they (5th in full size trucks) do half of what the GMC Sierra (4th in full size trucks) does (reference).
(I tried to look for a better reference, but most of them seem to compare the whole F-series line for ford.. though I'm sure the F150 is a good portion of those sales)

I wasn't saying that Toyota should build a platform that could accommodate 15k lbs of towing; I was saying that if they wanted that kind of towing capacity, they would need to build a stronger, and probably bigger, platform.

I think the size of the current generation Tundra is more than enough...maybe box the frame to allow for a somewhat higher payload. There certainly is no need to build something that is comparable in size to the Titan XD, diesel or no diesel.

I do t think they need to try and compete with the titan. They need to come up with something to compete with the F series. I also think they have an overall issue on capacity due to the Tacoma. I love my tundra, but current overall unit volume is low. It’s difficult for car manufacturers to invest in a platform with relatively low volume. There best chance is to invest in a game changer.
