Apparently I had a defective battery and the battery cells failed after only one year of ownership. Had to have my truck towed to my toyota dealership. At least everything was covered under warranty. Is this a common problem?

Why not jump start it and drive it to dealership?

Stock batteries suck. I have always had the stock battery start leaking within a year and go out within 3-5 years.

Batteries are somewhat iffy. Two identical batteries can have completely different life spans.
Sometimes there are other issues, like alternator not charging as needed. If #2 is short life, need to look at other things.

I don't believe that is one of the Toyota approved towing methods.

I keep a spare battery charged and ready to go. I also use it for the electronics and trolling motor on my little boat. Unfortunately, it won't help if I am away from home.

When they design batteries, they design them so they don't quite make the warranty time. For example, a 60 month battery might be designed to last 55 months. The credit you get is minimal and you have to buy their battery to get it. Planned obsolescence.

I forgot to mention that I did try to jump it. Left it charging for a good 15 minutes and nothing. Battery was completely drained, wouldn't even hold a charge. Had no choice but to call the damn tow truck lol.

Batteries usually last one day longer than warranty! Or, very close to it. One year unacceptable! Marine battery is way to go. $ but worth it. Why you tow your truck? Get some jumpers man.

dead cell. Batteries with dead cells will not jump or take a charge. Usually when they fail prematurely that is reason. I had a Ford battery go bad in 6-9 months. Luckily I had boat with me and used a battery from it. Problem with that year Ford was it required a low profile side mount battery and it died on a Sunday. I had to drive home with hood partially opened. Battery in my 2009 Tacoma did not make it 3 years.

My stock battery sucked and would turn over several times in weather near or below freezing even when the truck was new.

That's my backup/boat battery. Completely sealed. Three times the cost of a normal car battery.

I finally changed out my 07's battery at 7 yrs even though was still good. Bought a Bosch labeled piece of crap at Pep Boys. After 18 moths got a Yellow Top. I'm thinking those dealer True Starts are crap too!

On the same day in Nov 2014 I bought me a 2015 Civic Si and my wife a 2015 Civic EX-L as new daily drivers. Both batteries died exactly two years to the date of purchase. Drove to the dealer and they installed new batteries in both cars.

Honda installs a cheap 400 cca battery from the factory and the replacement is 500 cca. You cannot even purchase the battery that is installed from the factory.

I bought my 2012 Crewmax July 2014 and I had to replace the battery at the end of 2014. Seems factory batteries do not last very long.

Had a Lexus brand battery in my old 1992 SC300. That's what it came with in 2012 when I bought it, no idea how old it was. I think the old man who owned that car before me kept it in the garage with a trickle charger on it most of the year(car was 20 years old with 60k miles in 2012). Sold it about a month ago, 105k on it, same battery after 6 years.

My old 1993 Toyota pickup, I knew the owner, new battery from Autozone a couple months before I bought it. Dead in about 22-26 months and 10k miles. Highly annoying knowing he spent $100+ on that new battery to just not have it last. Lucky me I knew it was going bad, I always parked to where I had a good chance at a clutch pop start, either on a hill, in the back of the lot, not in front of another car.

My experience is your mileage may vary in terms of battery life. Also keep an eye on the battery terminals for corrision and apply some dielectric grease. For some reason all the Toyotas I've owned have been bad about corroding on the positive battery terminal. That 1993 Truck also had a no start because of corrsion. Bought a Coke out of the vending machine at work, poured it on the battery terminal, chemistry did its thing with the C02, it fired right up.

You got a whole year out of your stock battery. My battery lasted 3 months before it started having problems. If my truck sat for 5 days after charging it to 100% it would not start. I waited for the first maintenance and it was replaced under warranty. I told them i would keep track of this new battery. Can anyone guess how the new battery worked? Everything seemed to be going good and what do you know. At EXACTLY the same 3 months the battery started having problems. On my next scheduled appointment I told them about the battery and I would pass on a new one. They checked the battery and they said it was OK (not). If a battery will not even start your truck after sitting for only 5 days then there is definitely a problem. I will be buying a real battery soon.

The main thing to getting a battery isnt so much the brand (fyi, there are only 4 major battery manufactures in the world). Its about the date it was manufactured compared to the current date. Batteries can sit on a self for a long time, and the worst thing for a battery is for it to just sit doing nothing.

Home depote sells exide batteries now for around $100 dollars. Thats a really good deal.

Wallmart batteries actually arent bad at all. Just make sure to take a picture of your receipt.

For a premium bat., Odyssey is a good choice.

As for Optima, its a tough call now. Since the plant that makes them is now in mexico the quality control has diminished. It will either last 6-10 years or just a couple.

As for Northstar, probably the number 1 batteries in the world. If you can afford one, then thats the one. My 2 on my boat where over $900 a piece, but that is specifically for a marine application. A vehical one might only be in the $300+ range.

    Edit:
Oh yeah, Interstate, Die Hard plat., and Deca(sp?) Are top notch too.

Good morning all:sorry: about battery issues

I have new 18 Tundra only a month old
Don’t want to have this issue

Fortunately I have a company vehicle and my boy sits in the garage all week

I keep a battery tender on my ATV-because it sits and have had 2 replace batteries often- gets expensive!

U guys think I should buy another battery tender for the Tundra?

Will it harm any electronics/ computers?

Think this would cure this issue or it’s just junk batteries?

    Thx:bikewheelie2:

Heat kills batteries. In any car, truck, or motorcycle I've owned, and with various brands of batteries, I've never had one last much over 4.5 years here in Texas. The only battery that I'll never purchase again is Optima. I probably got a defective one; however, I had the positive post completely melt down the side of the battery completely encasing the terminal in plastic. The battery was less than six months old and was installed on a previous truck I owned. I had run other brands before it and several after before selling that truck with NO issues. When I took the Optima back, the guy behind the counter was a bit taken back and said he had never seen that happen before.

That being said, our 2015 Tundra battery started leaking at just over a year old. I cleaned up the corrosion, put dielectric grease on the posts, added the felt washers, and sprayed the terminals with battery spray. That protection lasted about two years and two days ago, our 3.25 year old battery died. There was no corrosion on the terminals (they looked clean as new) but there was battery acid under the battery.

Interstate Battery MT7-34r AGM was the replacement.

OEM batteries seem to be iffy at best. My wife drives a 2014 Acura MDX and her OEM battery was replaced by the dealer after just over a year due to bad cells. I'm waiting for the replacement to die.

Doesnt the tundra's ecm regulate the alternators output for the purpose of extending our batteries life cycle? If so, its starting to seem like someone with that team of engineers forgot to carry a number or put a decimal point in the wrong place. Lol..

I know its not funny that ppl are having their batts fail on them. Dont want my "lol" to be taken the wrong way. The possible irony is tragically humorous.

Was up at Autozone the other day and asked the guy about the Optima batteries that were sitting behind the counter. He said he has never sold one period in the 5 years time being there. I asked why and he shrugged his shoulders. I then said so those batteries have just been sitting there and he said they cycle them out. This is a high dollar area of living.
