Asking this online is gonna be like finding a needle in a haystack for Yall but it's worth a shot.. Coming from the engine, This truck has a rattle/buzz from hell from 1400-1600 rpms which seems to be where the engine likes to sit when cruising of course. At no other point can I hear it...I looked under the hood while dad held the gas and brakes at 1500rpms and the noise stayed the whole time just buzzing away. I narrowed it down to what seems to be the alternator? Weird. Spent an hour under the truck banging and trying to shake anything I could but nothing. I'm gonna lose my mind over this. I hope this is something that is common but I'm sure it's not.

yep bank account is running low from it..
The alternator should make some noise unless the belt or bearings in the alternator are going out...

Have to checked the heat shields?

I'd like to post a vid of it but idk how to get it on here...my name is newb for a reason. What is the evap purge vsv? Can U unabbreviate it for me.

Spoiler alert: Id put money on this noise being a loose bolt/nut somewhere. The sound is too perfect.

Ok, not the vsv then... loose bolt, that's hard to narrow down

Shocker here...trying to get this video uploaded is going just as planned. Failed. "The uploaded file does not have an allowed extension" is what its telling me.

I HATE TECHNOLOGY!!! Why cant it just WORK?! I should be able to click a button and put the video in this message. But I guess that would make too much sense.

Ok rant over. Anyone who wants to help feel free.

Does sound like something loose. Not sure what though. And weird it's only at lower rpms

Hmm, sounds like some sort of metal or plastic plate is vibrating. Thoughts:

Maybe try to feel around on the back side or under side of the alternator for a loose bolt. The alternator is bolted to a plate that is then bolted to the block if I remember correctly. Maybe try to loosen the serpentine tensioner and see if the alternator sags or if you can wiggle it.

Other thoughts based just on the sound.

    *Loose fan shroud
    *Loose skidplate
*Bolt on a 'spinner' on the serpentine system is loose.

Sorry for taking a year and a half to reply guys lol, got bored and figured I’d start posting again. So I FIXED THE RATTLE SOUND!!! This is so simple it doesn’t even make sense. . I loosened a bolt on the alternator just to see how tight it was, then tightened it back down like it was until the next day when I planned to replace the alternator. And guess what, the rattle has been gone since that moment. Never made another noise, something about that bolt which was already EXTREMELY tight, fixed something when I re tightened it.

    Hey guys,
I have a ‘16 Tundra xspx crewmax with just under 28k miles. Every now and again (a few times every two weeks or so) when i start up my truck I hear a rattling sound coming from about where the rear doors are located but I can hear the rattle coming out of both exhaust pipes....?
It sounds like basically a rock or a few pebbles are dancing around in my exhaust system and it goes away. So, it only sounds during idle rpms or no higher than 2nd gear as I’ve heard it only a few times while braking but I’ve only heard this rattle maybe three times as I come to a stop, I don’t think it has anything to do with my brakes as they have checked out fine at every tune up.
I thought it may have been bad gas, but I’ve treated the fuel lines and well the gas tank is still practically “new,” and the dealership has cleaned it as well. I have not yet mentioned it to my dealer bc it started just about a month or two ago.
Reading above, it wouldn’t surprise me if I have a loose bolt somewhere that rattles mostly upon ignition and resting, and it always goes away. Any other ideas as my truck is still warranted til 36k miles? Just envision starting your truck and it sounding like a few small pebbles or maybe just one pebble is in your exhaust pipe, that’s what the sound is like. The truck runs great but being it’s fairly new and I’ve taken great care of it, I’d like to get this resolved. I’m not mechanically inclined, so if I can get some feedback to tell the dealership for them to start with I’d be greatful.

    Thanks,
    Josh M

Things like this are really difficult to solve. You could have anything stuck in your exhaust. A rock, BB, who knows. Get under the truck with some safety glasses on and start tapping or banging on anything that can move or could have a pebble stuck in it. See what you hear and go from there

Also, zip ties are interchangeable with duct tape, obviously.
