My son-in-law's father has passed away, and I'm to be given his 187,000 mile 2001 Tundra. I already have a 2002 Ford Ranger with only 100K on the clock.
Ford is a 4 banger, Tundra is a V8. Ford is crank Windows and old school mirrors. Tundra has power windows and mirrors.
Ford=5 speed stick. Tundra is auto.
What should I carefully examine on the Tundra before deciding which truck to keep?
I won't be taking ownership for about a month.

I would examine the brand emblem
Toyota will last 3 times longer than the ranger :fistbump:

Also, check the service history. These first gen Tundras go forever. You have another 110k miles left on that Tundra assuming its been maintained.

You need to find out if timing belt has been replaced, about time for the 2nd belt.

Your 4 cyl. ranger will go a long while as well, and get better gas mileage. The Tundra will be a bit nicer and more powerful.

Having owned a Ford before, I say get rid of the Ranger. Tundra is a way better truck.

Keep both, Ford can be used for grotty jobs like hauling manure, will make it feel at home

Toyota emblem is a no brainer. Lots of gen 1 owners here that can fill you in on the up and up. Actually some already have!

My 2001 Ranger4X4 had the Cologne V-6 which was a great motor. If yours had it I'd say keep it too. I've driven the 4 banger version....no vomit....I mean no comment...heh...heh..

Here is my 2002 Tundra history
My friend bought it from dealer when it was 95k miles and sold it to me @244k miles. Timing belts,s-stat water pump, hydro tensioners and tensioner were first replaced @ 250k miles by me.
The truck now has 296k miles and many gen 1 tundras in our company are use by project manager all over 400k miles and still running good.

Welcome from Washington. Keep both. 5 speed manual will be fun to drive after driving the automatic.

Ford could be daily driver if needed and tundra when you actually need work done.

Once you drove the tundra the Ford won't be the same.

    Keep both, I would.

Check when the timing belt was replaced. Like mentioned before, it should be replaced soon at 90k intervals. @01erionracing mentioned what you will encounter a little down the road. Also check the lower ball joints, can be an issue with these 1st gens. There’s a lot of miles left in that 01 if it was maintained properly.
