Firstly, Let me emphasize that this thread isn't about patting ourselves on the back for our choice of trucks. I'm open to new technology, provided it's reliability is the primary objective.

Ok... Now that that's out of the way.

WTH is going on with Ford? Chevy and Dodge seem to be making sales progress as folks are getting used to questionable reliability (more than happy to quote various studies/reviews in order to remain as impartial as possible) and are encouraged by the new designs (Dodge).

I went on YouTube to see some Tundra videos and Ford "EcoBoom" videos pop up. Transmission issues, valve issues, turbos failing, computer systems turning off while driving with the emergency message "vehicle not in park" at 70mph, etc, direct injection issues, etc

Appreciate what we have folks. Gladly accept the lack of cutting edge technology. You have the last of the true dragons. Toyota purposely K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid).

To think I just wanted to watch a few Tundra videos.... At least the ones I did find never mentioned a problem with them. Lol

    Enjoy the ride.

I'm most interested in how the lexus LS500 will do on reliability. The LS line has historically been at or near the very top. I very much expect that engine/transmission to appear in the next Tundra.

Can’t speak to LS as we have a 2012 IS350 and it’s not high tech, but only a battery replacement. Wife happy.
I saw the new 2019 Dodge Ram. Holy smokes.. basically four lazy boy chairs and a Apple PC screen. All the fanboys are screaming in excitement.
No mention of towing or reliability. No caution to first year production gens, or over engineered Mercedes like gadgetry.

I don’t know man.. it doesn’t smell good. The link below is a 7min intro to planned obsolescence.

If only we could have a 3/4 or 1 ton. I have been seriously considering getting a 3/4 or 1 ton recently, but all of the problems with them are making me extremely uneasy about the thought. The payload on my Tundra is a joke, though. My wife's 4Runner has more payload.

But, I have also been kicking around the idea of keeping my Tundra and getting an older 3/4 ton (without all the bells and whistles) as my work horse. It'll have problems, too - but at least those won't be as expensive and I can work on them myself without fear of losing the warranty.......

Yeah.. that’s a thought. I guess you can’t have a cavernous cab and 10 inches of ground clearance AND payload. I agree on basics though for sure

My boss bought a 2015 f150 EcoBoost new in 2016 (left overs), he has on his 3rd throttle body and intake manifold and I bet it still misfires.

Also he hates that I bought a nicer truck than him. He's always saying "you just had to buy a nice truck than the boss". People come I and tell him they like his new truck but they are talking about the Toyota!:burnrubber:

They're all focusing on the tech now. If you look at the new Ram and GM clones, the engine performance didn't increase much if any. New bodystyles are what they are advertising. Look, we shaved $300+ lbs here and there. The new Ram has a self park feature... It's nice but you already know that half of the tech that Ram uses will start failing with no remedy in sight....GM's new interior is just too plain......

The issues that crop up will be systemic. My buddy already lost some HVAC with his seat coolers. Imagine the loss of you Infotainment system without duplicate manual controls? What about the replacement costs. Software and bug fixes? No thanks. I can park my own damn truck.

I had a 2014 Ram, this did happen a couple of times. No way to manually control it. I said no more. My wife's Expedition has climate controls on the screen as well but there are also hard buttons on the dash in case the screen goes to the dump. It is Ford Sync after all...... I can't say much either though, my Tundra's JBL unit keeps randomly rebooting...

I hate technology. My Tundra is damn near perfect except for some occasional misbehavior by the PCS warning system and that stupid radar the truck has. I will never use adaptive cruise control and I'm not interested in a truck that screams at me when it thinks I'm going to get in a collision. I keep hearing how the Tundra is way behind the competition in terms of technology and after this brief look into the future of trucks, I'm convinced that less is better.

We’ve had a few cars that seemed to have nailed it: 2013 Kia Optima and 2015 Kia Sorento. Yes, they are cars. But the big complaint seems to be electronics. We got the upgraded middle tier on each and have been very happy with each. I don’t know what they are doing but they seem solid.

Yes, they aren’t trucks, so powertrain wise they are used differently. Not sure how I’d feel about a Kia truck... Honda Ridgeline comes to mind :/

I love my tundra. The lack of bells and whistles was disappointing at first, but - as I’ve said on other threads - what I’d enjoy on the truck isn’t to difficult to add aftermarket. Generally these solutions are better than what’s included from the manufacture/dealer. Sound products as they are from reputable companies that have a single focus to produce the best product of that type instead of cutting corners to save on overall vehicle cost.

For the next gen tundra, hopefully they do something similar to what kias been doing.... producing reliable products out from the factory. I’ll be sure and let the early adopters test it out for a long time before I get rid of my 2017 :)

    Just my 2c.

I used to have an 04 Silverado 2500. Loved that truck. 6.6 turbo diesel, Allison transmission. Funny thing is after I bought it I started looking at it closely for maintenance stuff. Engine was made by Isuzu. Made me feel even better about it.
Unfortunately divorces happen. I’d still have it today otherwise.
So.......get an older diesel, ford 7.3 or old Chevy. Don’t get a newer one.

The less electronic gadgetry in vehicles, the better.

They must be marketing to the 20-25 crowd. My oldest 21 loves the tech and won't listen to the downside. He's in the market soon, well see where this lands. Some things can't be taught, they have to experienced.

33 here - I used to love new tech and was an early adopter on lots of things. now my priorities have shifted and I place a higher value on reliability. I like a lot of the bells and whistles but not at the sacrifice of overall reliability. I'm A LOT more skeptical of new tech these days lol

Turbo's, either gasoline or diesel, I don't mind. The extra torque is awesome. The fuel economy advantages are there (more so for the diesel, but the gasoline can get decent results with steady/unloaded driving).

With the efficiency standards trending the way they are, I think turbo's, or forced induction of some sort, is the way of the future until EV's and hybrid's become a practical option.

It's all the other stuff which I don't like or need: lane-departure warning; electronic-proximity doors; memory seats; electronic gauges...for god's sake provide a freaking oil dipstick, none of that electronic bs. The awesome thing is Toyota still makes relatively bare bones trucks and 4x4's. And you can find similar trim levels with the domestic trucks (Ram Tradesman).

Living in the Northeast, I'd honestly love a truck with crank windows. Going through a drive thru to get coffee on the way into work in February and you wind up having to open your door because the damn window is frozen shut.

bought my tundra because it's more or less a 'dumb' truck.

liked the f150 v8 but the interior was clearly over-tech'd for the sake of being tech and not actual efficient interfacing.

wish Toyota would figure out how to make cushy seats though.

those new rams are pretty wild looking inside. IIRC they are all hybrids now. some kinda electric assist thing?

The e-torque system is basically an electric motor. It powers certain vehicle functions (auto-stop-start, powers the battery) and also enhances the vehicle's torque curve at certain RPM's. It's not like other hybrids where the vehicle can actually run 100% on battery power. I guess it will make the truck feel more torquey, though I don't know how much, if any, fuel it will save. Still, it's an interesting concept and I'm surprised to see FCA pushing that technology in their trucks; I would have expected Ford or Toyota to beat them to the punch.

If it's an electric seat, I want seat memory... too much adjustment to get back to where I like it otherwise (the back adjustment is the pain - I know how close I sit to the steering wheel)... manual controls are fine - i can get back to good with those - pop the seat forward to up right, then back three clicks LOL

hate to admit it but the etorque concept makes sense for a truck. wouldn't want it and the maintenance that likely goes with it BUT it makes sense for towing/hauling.

31 here and Ive always been a toyota guy, almost at a million miles on 4runners and tundras. Reliability for me is key, but i do like the tech. I drive for work, usually hauling a trailer or a boat of some kind, so anything to improve mileage and comfort/ safety is good in my book. Now the shit stereo that comes in these things really pisses me off...

I'm guessing you want better mileage without the loss of power. so not just "anything to improve mileage" :D

I dont find the stock stereo in my SR5 w/ Nav to be complete shit... but the head unit is definitely sub par IMO... and the app that goes with it... give me a break...
