Painting chrome trim bezel around shifter

I posted some pics yesterday of it done and painted and several asked how to get it off to paint it. I just took some pics to show. Mind you all that this isn't step by step cuz its already done and pics taken after the fact.

First pull off the big trim around shifter, it's just pulls off. No screws.

You end up looking like this


Then you need to remove the plastic trim. This is one piece with chrome bezel and shift indicators. There are 2 little tabs on each side. When you get one side unclipped , you can just pull it off with a little wiggle. I pointed to the clips with screwdriver




Then turn that plastic trim piece upside down. There are some little black plastic welds / epoxy beads that hold the chrome piece on. Cut those with a sharp chisel. The chrome part will slide out through the bottom. You can see where I used hot glue in place of the epoxy in this pic.

Clean and paint your chrome with whatever you want. I used duplicolor trim paint. Let it dry and stick it back in, use epoxy or hot glue to hold it in place. Then stick it all back in reverse order and you're done.

The chrome surrounding the cup holder just pops off, very easy. Just clean and paint that too.



The little chrome trim piece on the bottom of the shifter also comes off with a little pop with a flat screwdriver. That just needs to be cleaned and painted too.

 

Great job! I did same few weeks ago, painted black but might redo paint match

I believe @SR5TRDTUNDRA did this, and I saw someone else's post, ther is vinyl decals that can go over chrome bezels maybe @DecalsByDesign can do this for us

Does this silver piece pop off as well or did you tape it off?

 

It comes off. I wanted it completely off so I could get every mm painted black

Rust inhibitor matte black rattle can lol. All I had. Turned out perfect (to me)

 

By the way, you don’t have to pry off the piece in the OP’s post. Just remove the trim screws and the whole console piece will pry off.

 

Huh? I didn't remove any screws you dont need to.

 

In order to take off the whole piece like I did you do. I didn’t remove the shifter plate like you did.

 

Oh ok I gotcha. You painted more than just the chrome too. That makes sense. I only wanted to paint chrome and didn't wanna deal with taping pieces off.

So did you paint that whole thing black? And the shifter trim? And no taping means you painted over the gear shift indicator?

Part of my center console area is padded leather, the part around the shifter that I had to pull off. Maybe thats only a platinum thing?

 

No, the rest was already black. I have an SR5 so the only “silver” part is the piece around the shifter plate and the chrome bezel around the cupholders. I removed both of those pcs and blacked them out, reinstalled them into the main housing, and reinstalled the whole piece onto the rest of the console.

 

It would be really nice of @DecalsByDesign could make up something to stick on the front of the vent bezels without having to remove and wrap or paint them. One company makes stick on pieces but I didn't like the looks of the fit and finish from pics I've seen. Definitely room for improvement as far as I can tell. It's pretty much impossible to have 100% coverage without removing the part and wrapping or painting but a good fitting decal on the face would be a huge improvement

 

Seems like more work than my method of just removing the parts you want to paint.
Thanks for the tip on removing that piece cuz I'll have to remove it soon so I can sound deaden under there. Have you ever removed the center console too? Seems like a chore that I'm not looking forward to

 

Someone on here posted pics of decals on ther bezels forgot who looked good

 

Problem is that the temp changes between hot and cold (AC on full blast) would probably make the decals eventually peel imo

 

Took me all of 3-4 minutes to pull the whole piece off. Longest part was the painting and drying.

No and I don’t want to lol.
